Week 47: DB Modified LAPD SWAT Qual
results may be posted until 11:59pm EDT on Monday 8-October-2012.

Range: 3 to 25 yds
Target: 8” circle for body; 3x5 card for head. The PT FAST target is an easy option to use: http://pistol-training.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/fast-target.pdf (print out on legal size paper)
Start position: concealed or duty retention holster
Rounds fired: 36 or 50

25 yds: 2 body under 4 sec--3x (same as the Defoor Test #2 shot in DOW #40)
15 yds: 2 body under 3 sec--3x
10 yds: 2 body then 1 head under 3.5 sec--2x
7 yds: 2 body then 1 head under 3 sec--2x
5 yds: 2 body then 1 head under 2.5 sec--2x
3 yds: 2 body then 1 head under 2 sec--2x

Bonus movement drill if you are not restricted by asinine nanny rules from moving on your range while shooting:
10 yards to 3 yards while on the move: 6 body then 1 head under 5 sec--2x
(Note that this means shooting while actually moving, NOT taking a few shots in a static position before moving, then stopping to take some more shots midway, then making the final shot while stopped at 3 yds—any shots taken while not moving are considered a miss)

This DOW is intended to be shot from the holster. If you must shoot from the ready, as a result of your crappy range’s stupid policies, reduce allowable time by 1 sec for each drill. Any round totally off the target is an automatic DQ (ie. 100% hits required to pass).

Please report the following when responding to this thread:

Start position (pistol, holster type, concealment)
For each segment of the test, report the time to complete and number of hits.

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

15 yds: 2.71/2.66/2.95, all hits
10 yds: 2.76/2.55, all hits
7 yds: 2.58/2.53, all hits
5 yds: 2.38/2.27, all hits
3 yds: 1.92/1.90, all hits
10-3 yds SOM: 4.33/4.68, all hits

This is one of the best drills I have seen to prepare LE personnel for a lethal force encounter.

G19 AIWB in a Keeper under an untucked polo firing Aguila 124gr JHP

25 yds: 3.52/3.58/3.22, 3 misses (Too far to be sure but I think it went: hit/hit; hit/miss; miss/miss)

15 yds: 2.62/2.52/2.50, 1 miss (I believe it was the second shot on the last string)

10 yds: 2.83/2.44, all hits (I accidentally ran it a third time for 3.33 -1 body)

7 yds: 2.99/2.86, 1 miss (head on second run)

5 yds: 2.77/2.26, all hits

3 yds: 2.13/2.25, all hits

SOM: I wish

This was fun and educational. I've been spending so much time at the 7yd line that I'm less than authoritative at other ranges. The 3yd runs especially - I was getting all hits under 2s easily with a little practice. I'll be running this drill as part of my regular practice routine.

Low ready start using low-ready par, (Can't draw from a holster at my range ) pistol was a Hi-Point C9 9mm pistol.

25 yds (3 second PAR): 2.83/2.89/2.98
15 yds (2 second PAR): 1.94/1.96/2.00
10 yds (2.5 second PAR): 2.23/2.41
7 yds (2 second PAR): 1.98/1.84
5 yds (1.5 second PAR): 1.49/1.42
3 yds (1 second PAR): .97/.99

SOTM: Don't make me laugh.

Pic is sideways because I suck at cell phone photography. Had to arrange the 3x5 beside the "body" to keep on the range's backstop at all distances.

Took 350 rounds to actually shoot the qual clean. I could either make the time or make the accuracy. Transitions to the 3x5 card were the worst part, as I kept putting shots just below or just above the 3x5 due to anticipation or getting ahead of the sights. At the end I finally managed to put it all together and stick the head shots and keep the "body" shots inside the 8 ring. Based on my experience I wouldn't recommend the Hi-Point for LAPD SWAT.

We modded our SWAT qualification from the LAPD qual. I'll post it when I can copy it from work. This COF looks familiar!

This may be the first time the LAPD SWAT Qual was ever shot with a Hi-Point...

I'm sure they'd get a kick out of seeing somebody shoot their qual with a gun they're probably used to taking off of bad guys. :D

Start position: Gen3 G34 concealed in a Keeper under a t-shirt

25yds: 3.06, 3.08, 2.88
15yds: 2.18, 2.24, 2.06
10yds: 2.39, 2.60
7yds: 2.28, 2.16
5yds: 2.00, 1.91
3yds: 1.55, 1.51
10-3yds SOM: 3.71, 4.03

All hits.

I tried to just take it really easy on the time and be absolutely sure of all the hits. A few of the body shots were only barely in, but the head shots came out pretty nicely.

Mine is incomplete, but I won't be able to reshoot, so I am posting this anyway. The timer battery died and too many shooters on the range to figure out my times.
I did 25 and 15 yards portions, 3 misses on 25, one on 15, missed par twice on 25, and then the timer was no more.

Biggest realization today was that using 5.5 inch bull + "credit" for hits within additional 2.5 inches of extra-diameter around it vs actual 8 inch bullseye set me up for a failure. Such target substitution is OK within 7 yards, but at 25 it was stupid. I am getting senile...

Shot this using the turning target system at the NRA, so no times.

Everything was within PAR. I couldn't get clear shots on both the head and body at 3yd (indoor range, would have hit floor or ceiling) so I shot the 3yd strings at 5yd.

I liked it. Simple to administer while still being more challenging than the typical LE qual.

Had a nice balmy Wyoming day to do this one today--35 degrees with gusty winds! The 25 yard shots were a little challenging, and I dropped a couple shots. I decided to try something totally different, for me, on this one. I decided to use my Specter Gear thigh holster for my Glock 17 instead of my normal concealment type gear. I normally just use this holster when I'm hunting and wearing a pack and/or a lot of heavy clothing; which is what I've been doing lately. I had never worked this holster against a timer, and I am definitely not used to a thumb break. I totally fumbled the thumb break on the first 3 yard run and got a pretty bad grip for the first SOM run. Otherwise it went pretty well.

25: 3.15, 3.20(-1), 3.03(-1)
15: 2.43, 2.36, 2.33
10: 2.64, 2.67
7: 2.62, 2.66
5: 2.07, 2.31
3: 2.02(-1 body), 1.91
SOM: 4.95(-2 body), 5.22

Shot cold as I do all weekly drills. Shooting cold is really were it’s at IMO. What seems simple is shown to be not so when you put yourself under a little time restraint without having drawn the gun all day.

I didn’t keep exact times, just made note of (2) over par shots and final down score of 15 out of 50 shots. The head zone was 2-3/4″x5″ that I marked out with my iPhone in a MagPul case. On the majority of misses I feel I could make up by slowing down. My first two shots were 3.xxsec out of 5sec and pulled them way low and left.

Not exactly a great performance, but I'm keeping track of these (on vid) for my own posterity. It will be interesting to see how it looks in year if I keep up with the weekly drills.

I shot this first with my Gen 4 G-17 with Ameriglo sights. Comp-Tac paddle holster and 511 vest.

25: 3.37 3.50 3.30 3 misses
15: 2.91 2.56 2.86 all hits OK
10: 3.52 (over par) 3.07 1 body miss
7: 2.39 2.54 1 head miss
5: 2.36 2.32 all hits OK
3: 1.97 1.89 all hits OK
Bonus: 4.36 hits OK 3.84 2 body miss

Too many misses. :(

I reshot it with my Gen 3 G-17 with a Warren Wave rear sight and a Dawson .125 wide fiber front.
25: 3.53 3.43 3.29 2 body misses
15: 2.60 2.71 2.75 all hits OK
10: 3.32 3.26 all hits OK
7: 2.89 2.91 all hits OK
5: 2.49 2.56 (over par) all hits OK
3: 2.00 1.84 all hits OK
Bonus: 3.97 4.08 all hits OK

I had better accuracy with the Warren/Dawson sights. Both guns are pretty stock other than the sights. The Gen 4 has the dot connector and the Gen 3 has a minus but the trigger isn't that much different between the 2 guns. Was it the sights or the practice run?? ;)

The Ameriglo front sight is the one with tritium and the green photoluminescent outline. I don't know if the wide sight with the big green circle is harder to shoot accurately or not. It seems like the Warren sights give me a crisper sight picture.

Shot cold, at the NRA range, using an M&P9fs with Ameriglo SW-201 sights, from a Cane & Derby PIC AIWB, under this shirt: http://www.cafepress.com/mf/58932443/challenge-accepted_tshirt

First round was Gold Dot 124gr+P GDGP (my carry ammo), the rest Aguila 124gr ball.

"C" = "clean," negative #s = missed

The 3yd stages were shot with the 3x5 placed to the right of the 8" circle, to ensure I was shooting into the trap, and not the floor/ceiling of a 50yd range.

25yd: 4.22 c/ 4.19 -2 / 4.86 -2

15yd: 3.16 c / 3.31 c / 3.60 c

10yd: 3.36 c / 3.64 c

7yd: 2.77 c / 2.90 -1B

5yd: 2.60 c / 2.43 c

3yd: 2.27 c / 2.09 c

I've somehow gotten faster in the last 6 weeks; no idea what it is that's "clicked," but I'm not dumb enough to argue with a streak. In this case, I was trying to ensure hits, and the misses were within 1" of the target areas, so I know I was dancing on the edge of my envelope. Even though I didn't make pars, I was close enough to them to be pretty happy with the results.

M&P9 FS, open front concealment.

25 yards: 3.88 (1), 3.77 (1), 3.96 (2)
15 yards: 3.15 (1), 3.38 (2), 2.97 (2)
10 yards: 3.69 (3), 3.22 (3)
7 yards: 2.94 (3), 2.89 (3)
5 yards: 2.59 (3), 2.70 (3)
3 yards: 2.14 (3), 2.12 (3)

This was a good drill. I concentrated on making good hits but still saw that I was trying to go too fast at long distance. My misses at 25 and 15 yards were out by just an inch or two. Up close, I am just plain slow getting the gun out of the holster and on the target resulting in late shots. I have been getting faster the last few weeks, but still have a long way to go.

Gen4 G17 from Keeper under untucked button down shirt.
Used turning target system for par time rather than try to use timer with an M14 firing in the next lane.
25: Clean
15: -3
10: -2B, 2H
7: -1B, 1H
5: -1B
3: Clean
