View Full Version : Let's talk about range bags
I'm in the market for a new range bag.
Nothing as big as a Samsonite suitcase, but something versatile.
What are y'all using, and what do you/don't you like.
Thanks in advance.
I have a couple RANGE BAG setups. If I’m going to the outdoor range with long guns, I have a large SnugPak rolling duffle. I need the size to carry my spotting scope, tripod, ammo, targets, etc. The rolling feature helps because it can be a trek from the parking lot to the lanes. I’ll carry the long guns in a separate backpack style case.
For handgun range trips, I have a Midway brand range bag. It holds 2 pistols, and has enough room for all the misc tools and essentials. If I need extra space for ammo, I’ll bring an MTM ammo can.

I use a small pelican case with small nylon bags and Magpul Daka's to organize. I have a small loose ammo bag inside it that I can carry downrange if needed. I like that its waterproof and is good if it starts to rain or you stash it in the bed of the truck.

I carry so much ammo and stuff now that a shoulder bag or backpack is too much. I now use this and it has been so much easier. At $47 from Walmart, it has been a bargin. Link (https://www.walmart.com/ip/HART-Stack-Cart-Mobile-Tool-Box-for-Hardware-Storage-Fits-Modular-Storage-System/105472220).

Not to be that guy, but here are several multi-page threads under the search option "range bags."
FWIW I have several of these general design: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/939221689?pid=288297
https://media.mwstatic.com/product-images/src/alt2/288/288297.jpg?imwidth=680
I believe one is from Midway another is from LAPG and I think maybe Boyt/Bob Allen.
Also have numerous of these, one for every pistol we shoot at GSSF matches and several for my other high-use pistols: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/939160870?pid=146982
They fit in the main compartment of my range bag and are handy when I take more than one pistol to the range.

VertX Gamut backpack.
I like being able to roll up targets and stow them in the side pockets, or keep B8 repair centers flat in the back zipper panel. I can also pack my Mk18 in it.

I use the GPS Tactical Range Packpack
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CQ8G2RO/ref=emc_b_5_i?th=1
Holds my eye and ear pro, timer, pistol ammo, Leatherman tool, writing tools, training log, holster, mag carriers, and pistol (two when required). It came with a brass bag too, I think.
I can grap this and a stack of targets and head to the range. With a long gun, I obviously need another case.
I’ve removed some the extraneous straps and added some MOLLE mag pouches to carry extra for IDPA matches.
It’s held up with weekly use for 5 years or so, and I’m not looking for anything else.

The midway bag absolutely exceeds the intersection of quality and value when it can be had on sale. I have used on nearly exclusive for a 2 Glock (g34/35) set up for 15+ years.
It is still quite serviceable and can be loaded up well past comfortable to carry.
If I was going to spend more than 100, I would want 500 d cordura and YKK zippers for sure.

So, I suffer from "fill the space" syndrome. And my best way to combat this is to limit the space I can fill.
Recently I bought one of these 5.11 Range Bags: https://www.511tactical.com/range-qualifier-bag.html - Which at 18L is fairly small overall. But I've found it perfect for carrying two pistols, a few hundred rounds, a holster or two, some B8s, mags, ears, and first aid. It doesn't hold much else, I could probably get a compact staple gun in there. Then I'd be about out of space.
But it solved my major problem, which is too much gearitis.

Probably a lot bigger than you looking for but I love my Force Protector Deployer bag. I got sick of juggling everything with multiple trips to my vehicle and to the range and back, now these are the three bags I take to every class or range trip.
Force Protector Deployer bag with all my gear, OSOE vehicle med bag and SERT 36" TCC with two carbines...

Shooters Connection. They have a large size and a smaller one. I have both. They are the best out there.

I'm using the Midway bag linked upthread, but I'm an instructor, so my bag hauls, in addition to my own stuff, four extra sets of electronic hearing protection, and five or six extra sets of eye pro. If I had a "just me" bag, it would still need to haul eyes and ears, staple gun/staples, first aid kit, two timers, a roll of target pasters, shooting gloves, and my ball cap. I love the look of that Vertx, but no way it would haul the amount of crap I take with me to the range every trip.
When I was running a protection detail, we used several of those rolling utility boxes. Made it a lot easier to conduct training on a relatively large scale (10-16 shooters per iteration).

Range bags have been a bit of a bete noire for me for years now. The gun room has seen literally a dozen of them in various states of destruction over the past three decades.
After resuming competition in a serious way a couple years ago, I destroyed two of the DAA medium range packs in the span of a few months. Good design, absolutely crap construction quality. I obviously got a bad batch, as both the first bag and warranty replacement both failed in the exact same way and were not abused at all, yet I’ve seen examples among fellow competitors who have had no problems.
I ran the larger VertX “COF heavy” bag for a couple of months this season, but found it to be less than ideal for me for competitive use. It is fine for a trip to the indoor range, where you can work from a table, but it’s not great out in the field. Well made, but the dual sliding tray thing isn’t ideal in outdoor environments where I shoot, typically either gravel or mud or moon dust.
So, I switched to an Eberlestock Bang Bang. I haul it bungeed to my DAA range cart, which works due to the hard bottom design. I’ve found it to have the ideal intersection of durability, weather resistance, organization and capacity for my use case (three pistols and 500 rounds along with eye pro, ear pro, tools, gloves, etc. is a typical load), and the hard bottom storage feature is really good for all sorts of things.

I like a backpack style range bag.
The past four years I've used this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PCMWSTW/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00PCMWSTW&linkCode=as2&tag=ratio07-20
I can carry everything I need, except for ammo, and any large targets/backers.
I carry my ammo in one of these:
https://www.harborfreight.com/material-handling/parts-storage/utility-cases-ammo-boxes/ammo-boxes/030-caliber-ammo-box-63135.html
The bag was a gift, and while not intended as a range bag it works well. I also like that the main compartments, and most pockets, have a white lining, which makes it easier to find what I need.
If I had to replace it, I'd probably get something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C7WCDQY/?coliid=ILAWGHE5E7DWY&colid=FDQADDMGEB3S&psc=1&ref_=_sed_dp&th=1
Again, not intended as a range bag, but has the features I want.

I have the top one. Works ok. I find that my old highschool school bag works better, in most cases.

I’m a big fan of the top one, and really the Midway bags in general. I have one setup with pistol stuff, one setup with rifle stuff, and a smaller one that I keep staples/paster/earpro and miscellaneous stuff in. The rifle bag I’ve had for 16 years or more now without any issues. The black has faded from the sun, but the rest of it is still in great shape.
I'm leaning towards the Midway bag as well.
Thanks to all.

That’s the route I’ve taken too, only Kobalt from Lowes. Don’t want to lug the weight anymore. I have a large Midway bag and a Shooters Connection Tournament series pro bag which will support a ridiculous amount of weight on top without collapsing and I almost never use them anymore.

I do that as well except that I keep my sight in targets in a 5gal bucket along with my paster guns and related items. I have another bucket with paint in it for metal.
This works ideally for me because I can pull up behind the bay on the gun club's outdoor range and I almost always use cardboard targets or shoot metal (ETA) which means I have either my pickup or my HHR close at hand. Don't laugh about the HHR, with the back seat down it can carry up to six target stands, sticks or posts (if shooting metal) for the stands, a case of cardboard targets, metal plates for the plate rack or other metal as well as all my shooting gear.
I noticed that some of the bags others recommended didn't have outside compartments. I especially like the conventional range bag setup for that reason. On the Midway style bags my earpro goes in the large compartment on the end, my PocketPro and range/weapon notebooks go on the other end.
One of the outside compartments on the side with two outside compartments is label 'TQ' in big letters on the side and the top flap and contains a TQ, an Israeli Bandage and a needle decompression kit as well as EMT shears.
That compartment is one of the reasons I like the conventional bag - I could confidently tell someone either 'bring my range bag to me' or. more importantly - 'get the baggy out of the compartment marked TQ and bring it here' instead of rummaging around and playing unzip the bag. etc.
That works well for the way I go to the range.

I haven't beat on it hard or anything, but it works well for me so far.
A coworker just got one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/TIDEWE-Tactical-Backpack-Removable-Handguns/dp/B09784MCKD/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=1LZOU8NI67YQY&keywords=gps+range+backpack&qid=1667503424&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI0LjA3IiwicXNhIjoiMy4zNiIsInFzcCI6IjI uNDAifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=gps+range+backpack%2Caps%2C110&sr=8-2-spons&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.006c50ae-5d4c-4777-9bc0-4513d670b6bc&psc=1
She just got it, so jury is out on durability, but giving it the once over, it looks pretty handy.
