Week 46: F-PAR Low% Draw
results may be posted until 11:59pm EST on Monday 01 October 2012.

by Todd Louis Green
Range: 7yd
Target: 3x5 card
Start position: holstered
Rounds fired: 20

You will need a shot timer for this drill and you will need to know how to operate the PAR function.

This is another Floating PAR (http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?5396-Week-45-F-PAR-High-Draw).

Begin with a PAR time that you can confidently hit the target from the holster. Draw and fire one round at the target. If you score a hit, reduce the PAR time by 0.1 seconds. If you are not successful, increase the PAR by 0.1 seconds. Do not make incremental changes greater than 0.1 seconds even if your times are much farther from the PAR.

Draw and fire again with the new PAR. Repeat the process (subtracting 0.1 seconds for each hit or adding 0.1 seconds for each miss) until you've fired a total of 20 rounds.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Start position (open holster, concealed, retention holster)
Starting PAR
Lowest PAR with a hit
Final PAR (20th draw)

(if you cannot draw from a holster, you may participate by shooting the drill from the ready position instead)

I ran DOW 45 and 46 back to back. It was an interesting contrast.

Start position - concealed AIWB
Starting PAR - 2.5
Lowest PAR with a hit - 1.70
Final PAR (20th draw) - 1.70

-Starting position: AIWB under T-shirt
-Starting par: 1.8
-Lowest par with hit: 1.5
-Final par: 1.5 hit at 1.30

I ran this following the previous DotW, so I was warmed up. However, as mentioned in the DotW #45 I have been working on my grip. This paid off in a big way as I have never been able to get hits at this speed on the 3x5. I have long been on the quest to consistently get 2 in 2 on the 3x5. Previously my typical time to first hit was in the 1.75 range with the occasional 1.6ish which makes the followup shot being over 2 sec. After working on my grip, the average for all shots was 1.44 and the gun just seemed to snap back on target for the second sight picture.

Start position: concealed (SACS/Warren 9mm 1911 in Keeper's Concealment aiwb under untucked polo)
Starting PAR: 1.7s
Lowest PAR with a hit: 1.1s
Final PAR (20th draw): 1.0s (miss)

This DotW was perfect timing for me as I've been working very specifically on my low% draw. A sub-1.1 hit on a 3x5 from concealment isn't something I would have predicted in a million years. I went from 1.7 to 1.4 straight, then had a string of late shots at 1.3 that kept me bouncing back and forth between that and 1.4 seconds. I redoubled my effort on finding and following the front sight all the way toward full extension and hit 1.3 and 1.2. Next I went between 1.2 hits and 1.1 lates until I pulled out an edge hit in the upper right corner on the 19th round. That put my PAR to 1.0 for the 20th and while I broke the shot in time, I missed by so far I think the bullet might have entered another dimension.

I used a Gen 4 G-17 with Ameriglo sights out of a Comp-Tac paddle, open carry.

Starting PAR: 2.0
Lowest PAR with a hit: 1.5 with a hit in 1.40.
Final PAR: 1.6 with a hit in 1.45.

I realized part way through this drill, that if I did a proper press out and prepped the trigger during the press out, I could get a hit.

Gun: M&P FS 9
Holster: Ludus Magnus MMA carried AIWB under T-shirt
Location: Indoor Range

Starting PAR: 2.0
Fastest PAR with a Hit: 1.6
Final PAR: 1.7 (Hit)

My fastest hit of the day was 1.50. Not super pleased with my performance this week (not that I ever really am, lol). Bounced between 1.5 and 1.7 almost the entire time. As a side note, my end of the day FASTs seemed to reflect the befits of this drill, dropping my Low% Draws to 1.58 and 1.61.

I did this one a number of times yesterday and today (you know how I love to push the draw!) Kind of went through a progression, working at paces that allowed pretty specific visual awareness of sights on target, and paces where I had to trust minimal or coarser visual information and especially index. When things went wrong it was most often because of a sloppy grip or visual impatience at high speed, breaking the shot when the gun wasn’t sufficiently aligned on target, and a few trigger jerks sprinkled in as well. But all the pushing paid off in its own way, allowing me to reach speeds on this target that I have not reached before. The heights reached do not represent something I can do consistently now, but rather something to continue refining to be able to do consistently in the future.

All runs shot with a Gen3 G34, concealed in a Keeper under a t-shirt.

Run 1:
Starting PAR: 1.5
Lowest PAR with a hit: 1.2
Final PAR: 1.2
Best hit: 1.03

Run 2:
Starting PAR: 1.3
Lowest PAR with a hit: 1.0
Final PAR: 1.3
Best hit: .84

Run 3:
Starting PAR: 1.3
Lowest PAR with a hit: 1.1
Final PAR: 1.0
Best hit: 1.01

Run 4:
Starting PAR: 1.3
Lowest PAR with a hit: 1.0
Final PAR: 1.1
Best hit: .96

Run 5:
Starting PAR: 1.7
Lowest PAR with a hit: 1.2
Final PAR: 1.2
Best hit: 1.07

Run 6:
Starting PAR: 1.5
Lowest PAR with a hit: 1.1
Final PAR: 1.2
Best hit: 1.06

Run 7:
Starting PAR: 1.3
Lowest PAR with a hit: .8
Final PAR: 1.0
Best hit: .75

Run 7 was interesting. I did more indexing and more firing with coarse or minimal visual awareness and made a number of hits at speeds I haven’t reached on a 3x5 before. I didn’t keep the PAR way down at the end of the run, but there was a downright magical section in the middle that went .96, .81, .77, .75, .78, all hits. I hope to cultivate the ability to do this more consistently and on demand in the future.

Woolrich Elite open vest

Starting Par: 1.8
Lowest Successful Par: 1.6
Final Par: 1.5 (missed the note card by about 1/16" in 1.48 :( )

My slowest time was 1.69. My fastest was 1.35 (miss). My fastest time with a hit was 1.46, but my par was on 1.6 for that one. Most of my runs were in the 1.5's. A couple were right at 1.50, but of course my par was higher for those. I had 6 misses and 4 overtime shots.

Target used (USPSA Head A-Zone)
Start position (open holster)
Starting PAR (1.70)
Lowest PAR with a hit (1.40)
Final PAR (20th draw) (1.50)

What I found interesting was that my final par on last drill to the body was 1.2 for a 8" target and this week was 1.5 for a 3x5" target. for the extra .3 sec I'm thinking it's a good idea to get a nice sight picture and better hit than trying speed shooting voodoo.
