Let's kick this off....

The below coyote was hit in the chest at a little over 200 yards (he was sitting on his haunches) with a .25WSSM ballistic tip handload. The round exited his hip, sent him spinning, and I still had to track him a hundred yards or so into a small cave and finish him with a Glock. Coyotes are tough.

Nice coyote! I have zero luck with seeing or calling in coyotes.

Here is a few of mine.

Rifle went down earlier this year on a multi day javelina hunting trip so I just went out to help scout for my buddies with my normal carry gear at the time. Fox just happens to be in season at the same time with the option of centerfire pistol.

I got him with my first shot from the draw just above the front legs severed the spine. I would of never tried this prior to taking pistol classes like Chris L, Mike Pannone and AFHF but I was confident I could get a good hit. This was my favorite hunting shot to date and my phone was dead from being stuck roaming all day.

Lots of friends to share the moose meat. Todd, I have plenty of moose antlers around, which your dog is welcome to, but this bull is a once of a lifetime animal, and will end up on a wall.

As long as we are sharing pictures, here are two from our second sheep hunt this August to the Brooks Range. We climbed on top of a mountain to hunt down on three rams, got caught by weather, camped on top and were greeted by snow on the morning of August 26th.

I don't really consider it "hunting" as there is really no skill, other than basic marksmanship required. But, it results in dead animals, so I guess it technically qualifies.

Here is my oldest boy (17) with his best deer to date. I dropped him and his littlest brother off to hunt one end of the section we hunt while I took my other boy(12) to the other end. His first deer without dad's help.

LR, where were those photos taken? Loving the view.

I forgot all about this thread!

The pics were from southern Idaho, down near the Nevada border, out on the "Sagebrush Sea".

In regards to the "Patina", I rescued this gun.

It looked much worse than it does now. Gunwriter John Taffin donated an ejector rod length barrel and a grip frame for the project and very kindly taught me how to swap frames one day after a gun show. This is now my "Taffin" gun. :)

As rough as it looks, the internals are bright and smooth and it shoots straight as an arrow.

The cool thing is that I don't have to worry about scratching it up when I am out bumming around in the mountains and deserts.

Smoked this yote at 324 yds on a slow trot w/my 30-06. I didn't lead him quite enough & hit him a little far back. It spun him around and he ran off about 50 yds. He was easy to track in the snow though. When I found him, he was still alive & quite pissed to say the least. A 230gr .45 JHP to the base of the neck put him down for good though.

http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab217/10mm4me/coyote3.jpg (http://s865.photobucket.com/user/10mm4me/media/coyote3.jpg.html)

I shot this one basically at point blank range w/a 75gr BTHP out of an old Armalite AR I used to have. Called him right in w/a squealer call.
I hit him in the neck and this was the exit wound. Pretty wicked.

Took my Malamute bird dog for a walk the other day, she flushed a grouse, so we brought it home. Were an awful lot of snowshoe rabbit tracks, may go back and look for some of them. Plenty of moose tracks also, I'm just as happy we didn't run into any of them. No bear or wolf tracks in evidence.

Will have to load up some more small game loads for the 71.

Actually, I'd had a Uberti copy of a Colts Navy hanging around loaded for a year or two and thought I'd freshen it up. The bunnies were overrunning the yard that year, I'd step out the door and 6 or more would scatter. I got 3 bunnies with 4 shots, one handed. First shot I'd forgotten how high it shot. Had one very fast hangfire, but all shots fired fine otherwise.

Meat for the freezer. Shooting a young button buck isn't something I would normally choose to do, but this was a target of opportunity. I was headed to my stand 15 mins after legal light (still 15 min before sunrise) and I always try to "hunt" to my stand. Well, this morning it paid off. I caught a little movment in the woods to my right and identified "a deer" (that's about as much as I could make out in the light). I took a knee, took a sight picture through my scope and waited for a clear shot. When he stepped into the opening between the trees I took the shot. 75 yards in a hardwood thicket. I didn't know it was a button buck (and not a doe) until I reached him, but still, the hunt was pretty thrilling being that close on the ground, moving, etc.

I went twice during Ga. archery, and missed a doe at 40 yards.

A month ago when the wind storm came through, I was in the woods. Not ideal conditions, but it's when I could go. Saw deer, but no shots.

Two weekends ago was our annual Father/Daughter hunt, and we had a blast even though my daughter did not get her first deer.

I hunted Saturday and didn't get any opportunities even though I saw deer. I had a nice big body 6 pointer come into the food plot I hunted early Saturday morning, and then I saw some antler-less deer moving through a thicket about 150 yards away. The Saturday evening hunt was beautiful and calm, but no deer even though the Swamp Chestnut Oaks (http://www.qdma.com/articles/know-your-deer-plants-swamp-chestnut-oak) were dropping about every couple minutes. A 125# Boar hog was eating his weight in acorns around me, but I am hoping to save him for my nephew when we have our annual Father/Son hunt the first weekend in Dec.

Sunday, I went to the Tree House stand on a huge power-line easement that crosses the Oconee River. The Treehouse is built in a huge Swamp Chestnut Oak that is overlooking a acre food plot. The oak is still dropping acorns. I had 3 doe under me for 10 minutes before I could pick out a shot through the limbs and remaining leaves. Shot her right by the ladder. All in all a fine weekend hunt that netted 2 doe that filled my freezer half way.

The mid morning wind picked up on the first day of deer season, and we were on a high exposed ridge. Partially as a lesson, to teach the daughter shelter building, partially to kill time, we erected a wind break.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b109/IV_Troop/AR%20M4%20SPRs%20and%20such/AEB5886D-3D4A-4DF6-AD1B-4AFD46BEB8EC_zpspd9xekd9.jpg (http://s18.photobucket.com/user/IV_Troop/media/AR%20M4%20SPRs%20and%20such/AEB5886D-3D4A-4DF6-AD1B-4AFD46BEB8EC_zpspd9xekd9.jpg.html)

Deer came out and I lasered a doe, 197 yards. Told my 12 year old girl to center the crosshairs right behind the shoulder. She was using a custom Tikka T3 in 6mm Remington. At the shot the deer collapsed with legs in air and slid a bit down the mountain side. Great first shot on her first deer hunt.

Haha, I think as long as you are outdoors in the bush, you can hunt anywhere.

Its made by a local company called Numenor. Its a reflex suppressor.

One thing we have going for us in South Africa is that all types of suppressors are legal and barrel length is not an issue.

Georgia legalized hunting with silencers for the 2014 season. Unfortunately I didn't get my stamp back in time to take advantage of it in 2014. I remedied that fact on Saturday, though. We had rain including some wind, thunder, and lighting until noon. That didn't deter me, though. With this week historically showing lots of rut activity, I had determined to sit all day regardless of the weather. By 6:45 AM I was 30 ft up a red oak on a hardwood ridge bordering some planted pines with some good rub and scrape sign in front of me. I saw tons of squirrels and a couple turkeys buy no deer. By 4:00 I was getting tired. A Summit Viper is a very comfortable stand, but anything gets old after 9.5 hrs; especially when everything is soaked. At about 4:15 I stood up to stretch my legs and turned around to check the creek bottom. I saw a sapling shaking like crazy and saw a gray body, but couldn't make out much else. I grabbed my rifle and dialed the scope up to 10X and saw that it was a decent-bodied spike (turns out one side was split, so technically a 3pt, but whatever). We are completely out of venison and my wife told me not to come home from an all-day hunt without deer blood on my hands, so I lined up the crosshairs on his shoulder and pressed the trigger. He jumped and ran about 25 yds before giving it up. He was slighting quartering to me at the shot and I was probably 100+ feet above him. The bullet entered just above the shoulder blade and exited in the far armpit. Bullet was a 150gr Federal Fusion. You can see the entrance wound below and the exit was roughly 1.5X the size. Not the huge blowout you see from cup & core bullets, but it did it's job and with probably less meat damage.
Rifle: Remington 700 LTR, .308 Win.
Scope: Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10X40 M3 in Nightforce rings and base
Suppressor/Dragging handle: AAC SDN-6

Coues White tail I killed at 300 yards two days after Thanksgiving, 2015. I hunted the far side of our nearest mountain range all day Friday with my son. He was sick the next day, and I waited to see if he'd feel better, but he didn't, so I went out for the afternoon by myself to a canyon near our place.

I was working my way back to my truck when I found a small group of does. I spent about twenty minutes stalking them and trying t turn one into a spike (I was hunting meat, but we can't kill does here), but none had any kind of antler. Right as I got to the trailhead, I saw another hunter next to the trail working some binos on a tripod. I sat down, back away from him, and waited for him to make his shot. He kept moving back and forth between his rifle and the binos, but didn't shoot. Finally, I hissed at him, and we had a talk. Turns out, there were two bucks, a 3x3 and a 2x2, on the opposite hill, but he wanted a bigger buck, so he offered to talk me into one of them and spot for me.

Well, like I said, I was hunting meat. The 2x2 was closer, at 300 lasered yards, but uphill from me. I laid my rifle across my backpack, took a solid prone position, watched him feeding until he turned broadside, bracketed his sternum and spine with my 200 and 300 yard reticle dots, and put a 100gr .243 through his left shoulder blade and lungs. Turns out he was quartering toward me a bit, so the bullet exited behind the ribs on the right side, and pulled some intestine out with it. He dropped at the shot and his legs twitched for a moment, and never moved after. I haven't killed that many deer, and this was my first buck, but even so, is was the fastest non-spine or head-shot kill I've ever seen.

By the time I navigated to his side of the canyon, it was back-side of the moon dark, and I couldn't find him. I had a good picture from my shooting position, though, and I was back at first light with some friends who helped me find him and get him out. It was plenty chilled up there that time of year, below 40F overnight, so I wasn't worried about spoilage. A coyote ate his tail during the night, though!

22 CB caps work pretty well in rifles, being nearly noiseless. They work well in pistols but are not quite as quiet. They still work fine for shooting in the basement with ear protection.

My first bow hunt ever at my in laws farm in NC this past Monday-Wednesday. Saw a half dozen doe the first day and a half. None close enough and a couple saw/smelled me and took off hissing.

2nd night this 7 pt makes his way towards me at dusk. I drew on him at 35 yards and again at 30. I just didn't have the confidence to send the arrow.

Patience paid off. He got to 22 yards and gave me a great broadside shot.

Great first bow hunt. I enjoy rifle but bow hunting is a different kind of amazing.

I posted these in my journal, but didn’t find this thread. Good bump.

Spent a week in Limpopo region of South Africa this summer, with Stanley Pieterse Safaris, www.spsafaris.com. An amazing experience.

Dang, that's a nice buck.

I shot this 10 point this morning from 200 yards using my Ruger No. 1 in .270 Winchester (150 grain Hornady loads). It's the biggest deer I've ever killed (205 lbs). Except for the first deer I ever shot at, this was the longest shot I've ever taken. I didn't feel good about the shot when it broke, but everything worked out pretty well.

Been having fun this year.
September scouting bonus. 6.5 GAP 4s. 130 JLK.
21581

One of the two best moments of the season. 215 yard heart shot. 6.5 Creedmoor. Daughters first big game kill. The other was seeing a mountain lion at 60 yards.
21582

Nice meat bull. .270 Winchester. 140 Accubond
21583

A friend of mine and I boned the meat out and hauled meat and gear out in two trips. Only 1.25 miles, but at 11k, it was a chore.
21584

I drew a good buck tag. Now that the freezer is full I can hold out for a nice one. That saga is ongoing. Saw a slammer yesterday for about 30 seconds. Couldn't find him again yesterday or today.

This is my buck from last fall. I had a friend that gave me some areas to check out, since he had spent a lot of time scouting, and had tagged a smaller, but still nice 4x4 buck in the same area during the early muzzleloader season. I hiked several miles in to get at this guy. I had just about given up, and was picking which of three ridges to hike back up, when he broke cover out of the draw and scrub directly in front of me... hightailing it for the next county. All I saw was a WIDE rack, and a big white butt going away from me. I sat down, slung up, popped the caps on the scope and put a single 180gr Accubond handload through his boiler room, all in the space of scant seconds after I saw him break cover. Distance was only about 90-100 yards across the draw.

I didn't have time to get buck fever, or debate if I wanted to shoot him or not. I had been holding out the last several years for a bigger buck, and passed on a lot of small ones. I didn't even know exactly how many points he had, or how big he really was until I walked up to him on the ground. Right at 30" wide... not a high number score, with the shallower forks (160-170?), but I'll probably never shoot another deer this big in my life. I could not drag him uphill after field dressing, so I ended up quartering him. He had to have been 200 lbs+ on the hoof.

Finances, work, not drawing tags, and other considerations have kept me from big game hunting this year. It's a bummer... so I may have to make due with chasing chuckars in the desert, or maybe find a field to walk for pheasants.

Wife Popped her hunting cherry by taking this little guy in Montana last month. Meat is en route via refrigerated delivery truck; hope to have it by Christmas. The guide is still working on the mount. Sadly, he insisted on a (unnecessary) follow up shot that ended up traveling up the spine, and exiting the eye...... but did some bouncing around inside first, fracturing the skull and tending it unusable for a European Mount. I was really looking forward to having it dyed in metallic/copper color scheme. Oh well, a nice walnut mount will still display nicely.

Not bad for a first time ever game hunt. Marksmanship was phenomenal; animal quartering away, entered behind the third rib, wrecked the right lung, and the heart was unable to be found. Good job baby!

Now go make some chili!

Anyone who comes to help with deforestation will be well fed.

Probably is possible, but I’ve dumped as much cash into this hunt as I’m willing to dump....... still waiting on the delivery bill for the meat, as well as the bill for the custom ivory/platinum necklace. Not to mention we don’t have a single room in the house with a ceiling tall enough for this mount......... had the guide adjust the angle, and even with that, we’re going to have to do some creative decorating to make it fit.

Glad to see you (figuratively)..... hope you and yours have a great holiday season.

Last Saturday in the GA woods. Spent most of 12hrs in the stand (got down 9-12 to help a buddy drag out his first buck, a spike). Pretty weather and nice view:

https://i.imgur.com/aEMO4iQl.jpg

Saw 8 or 9 deer total, can't remember exactly. All small bucks except for one doe. Finally, an hour before dark I determined I wasn't going home empty-handed. With 3 little ones my woods time is more limited and the boys want jerky, so I let go on this little 7pt. He'll eat good. First time I've ever tried a straight-on shot, but that's what I had to work with. 50 yds, through the neck into the top of the spine. Dropped on the spot. 64gr Speer Gold Dot.

You can keep that liver. Yuck. But if you cut out the sploded part of that heart it'll make some damn good chicken fried steak strips after a lot of cold salt water soaking. Best I've ever had! Too bad you lost the bullet.

Went out for a couple of stands this afternoon after the storm broke. First stand had a hard charger come in from the south. Saw him from 1/2 mile out all of the way to the call. I killed the sound when he was 200 yards out, then howled and woofed at him. Couldn't get him to stop. He hit the call and bolted. I shot at him on the run but missed. I kicked the sound back on and a couple of minutes later another one came in from the northeast. He was acting kind of hinky and reversed course to leave at about 150 yards. I shot at him on the move and missed again. He checked up for a last look back at 340 yards and I thumped him.

I picked up and hiked a mile north to get one last stand in before dark. Called in a herd of cows. Lol. Right when I was just about to call it a night, a coyote came barreling in from the northwest. He was on me so fast that by the time I got a shot off all I could see was fur in the scope. I missed him too. I suck at running shots....
Been a while since I have had all of the coyotes on a hunt come in that fast and not stop. Usually I can lip squeak, bark or howl and get them to stop for a second. Not today. Good times, though. Lots of action.

Went out calling again today. For my first stand, I walked a little over a mile into the edge of a brushy creek where I had seen coyotes in the past. I started the caller playing prairie dog distress on about ⅓ volume. After less than two minutes, I saw a nice Muley buck going up the ridge on the other side of the creek. I checked him out with the binos for a few seconds. Right when I dropped the glasses I saw a coyote standing on the edge of the trees to my north. He was coming in at a moderate clip and would stop when I would pause the sound, then resume when the sound was playing again. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a blur of motion. Coyote #2 came in fast and stopped behind a bush less than 50 yards from me. Coyote #1 appeared to be looking at something to his southwest, I was to his southeast. He started trotting in the direction he was looking and then bristled up and started charging after something. Then I saw the bobcat!! The coyote was all over that cat and chased it over a little ridge to the west of me. I looked back at coyote #2 and it was still standing there watching the other coyote and the cat. He broke cover and came to the call, then went right past it. He stopped and looked back and I dumped him. Coyote #1 had come back over the ridge but bolted at the shot.

I switched the sound to a coyote fight to see if I could get #1 to peek out. After a little over a minute, I saw #1 going up the ridge the deer had gone up earlier. It stopped, so I ranged it at 469 yards. I was starting to figure my drops so I could take a shot and coyote #3 came over the near ridge, right next to where the bobcat had disappeared. #4 popped up a little to the south of it a few seconds later. I killed the call, but the coyotes were coming in fast. They were apart enough that at the same time #3 got to the caller, #4 stumbled on to the coyote I had shot. They both started bouncing around like idiots. #4 was the first to stop, so I shot him. #3 bolted without looking back or stopping. Start to finish, this whole thing unfolded in less than 10 minutes. Talk about getting your blood pumping!! My craziest stand ever.

I moved to another spot and hiked in for another stand. Again, prairie dog distress on ⅓ volume, I had a coyote charge right up the bottom of the draw to the call at the two-minute mark. I barked, he stopped, I shot. That’s that. Called in five coyotes and a bobcat on two stands. Killed three coyotes.

Interesting question. Each deer I've double lunged with a rifle took off like a shot, at the shot then fell in 20-30 yards, with the exception of one small doe dropping at the shot in place from a .30-30. Neck and spine shots, sure, bang flops again.
With the exception of the bang flops, I've not noticed any reaction but to run.

This one crumpled into a crouch, then got to running VERY badly like both legs on one side were shorter than the other two. He fell in about 15 yards and that was that, as they say.

This weekends hunt. Started off at a friends place in Camp Wood Tx looking for hogs. And we did not see a damn thing from 10p-7a. Game cams show those feeders full of hogs ever night. Nothing. So we stopped by another friends place up in Junction, Tx, and the Axis were all over the place. Took an 84lb doe. I would love to say it’s a “hunt”, but I just shot off the porch. Feeder is lasered at 148 yards. Not too difficult a shot. Good times with friends, and got to bring my son along.

Just got back from a return trip to South Africa. Had a great time and also spent a few days in Kruger National Park. Wife took about 1700 pictures. I only took a few shots - apparently I subconsciously decided to clear all the "W" on the checklist this time.

Old Wildebeest bull:

2nd weekend of the dove hunt last month. We only saw a couple of birds, didn’t get a shot at one at all, messed up an easy shot at the second.

Then the rabbits started running. I’ve never killed one with a shotgun before, got two that day. Was pretty fun. They tasted different than domestic rabbits.

I've not been having any luck the last few years. This was a black bear track from the morning. The snow fell over night. I tracked it for hours but never got close. The temps ranged from 5-19 so I would guess he was scrambling for a den.
About 20 minutes until sunset he scooted into a swamp and I was tempted to drop my rifle and belt and go in light with my 1911 and a surefire. I stood there, drank some water and heard Dave Paulides talking about me so I decided to go back

LittleLebowski inspired me after his successful harvest here at Rancho Del Frogo, so after educating myself about hunting, and the Hunters for the Hungry organization, I ventured out to try my hand at it. After about an hour, this guy rolled in pissed off and limping so I bitch-slapped him with a 500 grain .458 SOCOM “Buzzsaw” from Black Buttefly Ammunition.

He took zero steps and was DRT.

Pretty pleased with my first deer ever.

More pleased that people will benefit from him during this holiday season.

I shot this squirrel with my Ruger Mark II 22/45 today. The squirrel was on the ground in some brush about a dozen yards away. The bullet clipped the spine just in front of the shoulders and bruised the lungs. Frankly, I was surprised that I hit it and more surprised that the shot was that good. I haven't shot my 22/45 in over a year. This squirrel is the first game animal I've ever killed with a handgun. Both daughters, ages 4 and 7, were with me and seemed to enjoy it, though the four year old left when I started to clean the squirrel.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191225/42890938e8c2e102bb5f65e4def92acc.jpg

Our bow season opened this weekend. I hunted Saturday AM and saw 4 bucks including a big 10 who busted me when I tried to draw on him at 30 yds. Went back yesterday evening and had this guy at 10yds under my stand before I was even set up. I was still spraying down with cover scent and situating gear when I noticed him. I waited for him to step behind a tree, then quickly ditched the spray bottle into my pack, grabbed the bow, and drew. When he stepped back out at 14yds I let fly. The best part was that my wife and kids were able to join me for the track and recovery process!

My grandpa passed earlier this year. This Winchester 30/30 was his. Those are his initials he put in the stock. I clearly remember it standing in the corner of the box blind while I sat next to him on my first deer hunt when I was 8 years old. He taught me to shoot, to hunt, to fish, to enjoy the outdoors.

When he passed earlier this year I committed to taking a deer with it before the season was out. I took it on several hunts and passed on several small bucks, does, and a few good bucks that were out of range.

The Lord saw fit to bless me with an opportunity on this 7pt yesterday AM and I was proud to take it. I used grandpa’s knife to gut this one too.

Extra thanks to Malamute for his help in getting the parts I needed to round out the sights a few years back.

Coues whitetail hunt this week.

In Arizona, we get tags by lottery, and it is it unusual to get a hunt during an inconvenient time, or to not get a tag at all. Bucks only for deer, except for the Kaibab youth hunt.

Our herd management might be a little off.

Anyway. I got the late November/early December hunt this year. The last time I connected on a deer hunt was in 2015, but I have gotten a couple of tags that went unfilled in between then and now. One was during grad school, and I got out to hunt one day that year. The other, I also wasn’t able to get out too much and just never saw a buck. Except for one smart old guy hanging out in someone’s yard.

This year, I got a new M70 Winchester, and used it.

The hunt started the day after Thanksgiving, and all of my planning went out the window because of the holiday. Instead of camping in a distant area of the hunt zone and starting hunting before first light, I stayed home Thursday and did the things SWMBO needed me to do. So I went Friday to a canyon I love near our home. It was slammed with hunters. I left and went to another canyon. Much less pressure, but still a lot of hunters. I saw does.

Saturday, I felt lousy, so I didn’t get out till the afternoon. I hiked a mountain in another favorite canyon. I saw a lot of does, and only a few hunters.

Sunday I stayed home, Monday I went to work. Tuesday, I went back to the canyon I’d seen so many does in, but there were a lot more hunters and they were already hunting where I’d been before, so I went to a different branch and hiked a mountain.

I saw a few does, both while feeding and in shelter belts. Just in the last few minutes of shooting light, I finally saw a buck, but he was small and far away. I relocated twice to get closer, but he moved into a shelter belt and I didn’t see him again.

Hiking down that mountain in the dark was a little bit treacherous.

Today, I went back to the same place as Tuesday, and saw a couple of does. But then one of them had a spike buck following her up a wash and into a saddle. I tried to get an angle to make a shot, but it wasn’t to be. Momma wanted him off that ridge and into shelter - she knew I was there.

20 minutes later, he was back out eating, and I made a shot I’ve never had an opportunity to make before while rifle hunting in Arizona: 130 yards, animal broadside and motionless, me standing with my rifle resting on top of my binocular tripod.

Slam dunk. 110gr Sierra Prohunter cut his heart, shredded lungs and part of the liver. He ran 8 yards, spun out, and was laying on his back tangled in some deadfall.

Yeah, he’s a spike. Any Coues is a trophy, though. They’re hard work. I hiked a lot of mountain miles to get him, and had a long hike down a mountain to get him back to the Durango. His momma was calling for him while I was carrying him out. That was a little bit strange feeling.

Taking a break from cutting to rest my back.

Took the oldest out after snowshoe hare, today. Had to bring shovels to dig our way into the trailhead to even park. Single-barrels, 16 gauge, and plain lead #6 still work even if the forend has to be taped on. Speaking of work, stalking winter coat hare sans beagle. Also without snowshoes as the country was so thick:

https://i.imgur.com/BtM9pJvl.jpg

This was at the outside edge of my comfort zone with a cylinder bore and left no blood trail until it finally* expired in the real thick spruce and finally drained some red.

Kid spotted another taking off at my shot but it was behind trees and gone by the time his 20 gauge pump was mounted. He also barely missed out on a shot at a grey squirrel. I was working around the tree to push it to his side but it dropped enough altitude that he couldn't safely take the shot. Proud of his fire discipline. And his traffic control letting passing motorists know we were good and trying to park, not dig out.

Now to make bunny stew and begin preserving lucky rabbit's feet.

* Edit for wording: "Finally" as-in "after a short sprint to thick cover."

Congrats on the Coues. The closest I've ever come to one is reading some of Jack O'Conner's stories. I've shot a few whitetail does out of pairs of antlerless deer. Typically the smaller one seems to be the baby and doesn't want to leave without mama. I've had to run a couple of them off--waving my hat over my head and yelling at them. One year I shot a doe that still had milk. Makes me feel a tiny bit sorry for shooting the mama, but there's no shortage of deer here and those young ones are old enough to get along on their own. I rarely get to hunt before Christmas, so it's not like I'm shooting deer in September or October.

I never hunted whitetail before moving to Arizona, so the only variety I have experience with are Coues. Since I grew up hunting mule deer, Coues all looked like babies until I’d been here for a few years, even the biggest and oldest of them.

I was hunting quail in the river bottom a couple of weeks ago and bumped a mule deer. After all that time looking at Coues, that doe looked like a horse! :D

I've never tried to pluck a duck though.... I might be tempted to just cut it up. Plucking seems like a PITA, especially on a smaller (<5lb) bird.

When I was in HS we used to hunt on a ranch NE of Douglas just north of the border. Our neighbor (Marion Fairchild) still owned the ranch but didn't live there anymore. Usually never bumped into any other hunters. One year I remember we did and it was two guys that I knew in HS and their dad. That was around 1965. We usually were able to get at least one deer in that area every year.

I lived in Mesa AZ in the 70's and we hunted Mingus Mt near Jerome. Lots of deer and lots of hunters. We had one hunt where we had 3 nice bucks by 10 AM on opening day but it was crowded. I'm still not sure how we did that.

Back in those days it was all bucks with at least a fork. No does or spike bucks.

I can't imagine what it's like there now.

That's a nice buck. congratulations.

Nice!

I like to smoke duck... Then make curry out of anything left over after the first meal.
I've never tried to pluck a duck though.... I might be tempted to just cut it up. Plucking seems like a PITA, especially on a smaller (<5lb) bird.

Beautiful dog too...

Peasants are easy to skin, not sure about ducks as I've never hunted those. I've come across many ducks where the breast was cut out and the rest of the bird left for the coyotes. Not sure if that's a game violation or not but I've seen it.

Smoked duck on the menu? I'll have that. We're doing Christmas dinner at a place that has that on the menu.

Finally got around to my first “hunting” trip last week at a fancy high fence ranch in South TX.

Had a great time with some good folks, even if the hunting part was kinda cheating.

ETA. Sorry for the sideways pic.

Killed these two three weeks ago while solo camping in the mountains of SW VA.

This was my first fall turkey and was taken at 20yds from a ladder stand of all places. The buck was taken at 5yds from the ground (it was pretty intense). Seems those should be reversed but that's how it was.

Both were taken with a Wicked Ridge crossbow shooting Rage Hypodermic 100gr expandable broadheads. Clean pass through on both. The gobbler was DRT and the buck ran about 50yds down the ridge before piling up.

Thanks guys. I brought my son out there to pace it off. I had him stand where the buck was to show my wife. "I guess all that shooting paid off."

Nice buck! How was shot placement on the entrance wound side and how far did the buck travel after hit? Just curious.

He was slightly uphill and quartering ever so slightly towards me. Impact was a high shoulder shot with the bullet striking the trailing edge of the scapula and nicking the lower spine. He went down like a lightening strike and I was confident the shot was "fatal", but I felt compelled to put a finishing shot (neck/spine) in him shortly thereafter as his demise was taking a little longer than I prefer.

Last September, my hunting partner Ross and I traveled to Greenland for a muskox/caribou hunt with Lings Hunting Greenland. Given the state of play in air travel, the only route from the US to Greenland went through Copenhagen, Denmark. For me, that meant Florida to JFK to Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, and the reverse on the return trip. We had overnight stays in Copenhagen on each end, and got a full day in the city on the way out. This complicated traveling with rifles, but Lings had offered to provide rifles and ammo at no charge. We’ve never done that before but decided to make life easier and try it.

We flew Delta out of JFK and arrived in Copenhagen early in the morning. We were booked into the Clarion airport hotel. In the states, Clarion is a budget brand, but there’s nothing budget about this hotel, very nice. After dumping the luggage, we took the train into the city. Copenhagen is clean, beautiful architecture and people, lots of bikes. A great walking city, Copenhagen has extensive green space, terrific restaurants and lots of cultural stuff to see. Malmo, Sweden is just across The Bridge (see the excellent Swedish TV series by that name), a quick train ride.

The next morning, we were on the Air Greenland flight to Kangerlussuaq. AG makes one round trip a day between Copenhagen and Kangerlussuaq. It takes 6 hours to fly from JFK to Copenhagen; 4 hours Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq. The route takes you over Iceland which looks mountainous and small. AG has one jet for international travel, an Airbus A330-800, which just this month replaced the A330-200 we flew on. Kangerlussuaq, with a population of just over 500, is pretty much just the airport, Greenland’s only international airport. The airport, like most of the Kangerlussuaq infrastructure, was built by the US in the WWII to Cold War era. It sits on the western edge of the Greenland ice sheet, the world’s second largest, after the Antarctic ice sheet. The ice sheet covers about 80% of Greenland, is about 1,800 miles long, north-south, and averages a mile thick. There is a gravel road between Kangerlussuaq and the ice sheet, so we hitched a ride out there with Hannah Lings. It was my first trip to big ice, and it was humbling. We walked out on the ice for about an hour, and, with the heavy overcast, there was no horizon, just white as far as you could see. You feel pretty small. People do cross the sheet with dogsleds, but this seems like crossing the Denmark Strait in a canoe.

Most of Greenland not under ice looks like this in the summer; tundra, hills and lakes.

The next morning, we flew to the hunting camp on one of Air Greenland’s two search and rescue helicopters, an Airbus H-225. It’s a three-day hike to camp, but the flight took about 15 minutes. There are no roads in this area. ATV use is heavily restricted, so all supplies are brought to camp by dogsled or helicopter. Lings Hunting has 4 camps in the area; use is determined by season of which there are two: summer and winter. Karsten Lings is the head of the family, a Viking who worked for many years as a commercial fisherman and now runs the hunting operation full-time. Hannah, his wife, and the kids Lukas and Vivi round out the family. Lukas and Vivi are both hunting guides. The week we were there, we had Karsten and Lukas on site, with two other hunters from Texas, and an Inuit kid, Paul, who was learning to be a guide. Karsten took the Texans, we had Lukas, and Paul alternated.

The camp consisted of two shacks, a cook shack with a large dining table and a set of bunk beds, a second smaller two-man shack and tents. We scored the small shack which was spartan but comfortable with a kerosene space heater, two beds with minimalist mattresses, sleeping bags and, amazingly given the middle-of-nowhere vibe, industrial outdoor carpeting on the floor. No cell service, no WiFi, no electricity (except for a small gas generator that was on during dinner), no running water. We rented a sat phone for this trip. Worked great for checking in back home. Drinking and cooking water came from the lake. The outhouse was a tent containing a plastic bag toilet. Temperatures were highs in the low 50’s, lows in the low 30’s. The wind blew constantly and, since it was mostly coming off the ice sheet, it was cold. It rained on and off for a couple of days, only one morning of heavy rain, so it wasn’t much of an issue. We had good gear and dressed in layers. As the day went on, layers would come off and go into the pack. Late in the day, the layers would go back on.
