Week 45: F-PAR High% Draw
results may be posted until 11:59pm EST on Monday 24 Sept 2012.

by Todd Louis Green
Range: 7yd
Target: 8" circle, IPSC A-zone, or 8.5x11 sheet of paper
Start position: holstered
Rounds fired: 20

You will need a shot timer for this drill and you will need to know how to operate the PAR function.

This week's drill will push your draw speed using a Floating PAR (basically the same as the "diminishing PAR" from Week 8 (http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?2274-Week-8-Diminishing-PAR-Reloads)).

Begin with a PAR time that you can confidently hit the target from the holster. Draw and fire one round at the target. If you score a hit, reduce the PAR time by 0.1 seconds. If you are not successful, increase the PAR by 0.1 seconds. Do not make incremental changes greater than 0.1 seconds even if your times are much farther from the PAR.

Draw and fire again with the new PAR. Repeat the process (subtracting 0.1 seconds for each hit or adding 0.1 seconds for each miss) until you've fired a total of 20 rounds.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Target used
Start position (open holster, concealed, retention holster)
Starting PAR
Lowest PAR with a hit
Final PAR (20th draw)

(if you cannot draw from a holster, you may participate by shooting the drill from the ready position instead)

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

I used an IDPA target with the down zero outlined with a black marker. Open carry G-17 Comp-Tac holster.

Starting PAR: 1.7
Lowest PAR with a hit: 1.2
Final PAR: 1.4

Second try

1.4
1.1
1.1

At the faster times it was all about index for me. I can't read the sights that fast. :(

Q-PT 8" circle at 7yd
from concealment (Keeper aiwb)
Starting PAR: 1.30 seconds
Lowest PAR with a hit: 0.90 seconds
Final PAR (20th draw): 1.00 seconds (hit)

My best draw with a hit was 0.86 which is definitely not something I can pull off on demand. I bounced back and forth between 0.90 (misses or over time) and 1.10 (consistent hits in time) for most of the drill.

Ran it three times. I was right on the edge for a lot of it.

USPSA Metric/A-zone
Gen3 G34 concealed in a Keeper under a t-shirt, hands down start.

Run 1: Started out pretty well, driving the PAR right down, then got inconsistent at the end (pulled a few shaky grips) and drove the final PAR back up.

Starting PAR: 1.30
Lowest PAR with a hit: .80
Final PAR: 1.20
Best hit: .77

Run 2: More consistent on this one. Bounced the PAR between .70 and .90 for most of it. Just missed getting the PAR down to .60 with a near miss (1” into the C-zone) at .70 when the PAR was .70.

Starting PAR: 1.30
Lowest PAR with a hit: .80
Final PAR: .80
Best hit: .76

Run 3: Fastest hit of the day was in this run, but missed a few at the end and drove the final PAR back up again.

Starting PAR: 1.30
Lowest PAR with a hit: .80
Final PAR: 1.00
Best hit: .71

Target: P-T target at 7 yards
Starting Position: concealed, strong side IWB
Starting Par: 1.9 seconds
Lowest Par w/ Hit: 1.5 seconds
Final Par: 1.4 (miss and over time)

Like Bill my faster par times relied too heavily on index.

Gun: Gen 4 Glock 17
Target: Action Target 40% IPSC Torso (body is about 7"W x 9"H)

I ran this three times so I could test out the three ways I normally carry or compete. I used the same par time for all three so I could compare apples to apples. In hindsight I wish I'd started with a lower par time so I could have made more attempts at the lower pars; but I feel I ended up pretty representative of my current abilities. Anything lower would have been the exception, not the rule, and not readily repeatable.

Run 1: Hands at sides, Comp Tac paddle holster @ 3 o'clock, Open front Woolrich vest. This is my normal IDPA setup.

Starting Par: 1.7
Lowest Par achieved: 1.1
Ending Par: 1.1

Run 2: Hands at sides, Comp Tac paddle holster @ 3 o'clock, open carry.

Starting Par: 1.7
Lowest Par achieved: 1.0
Ending Par: 1.1

Run 3: Hands at sides, Comp Tac Ctac holster IWB @ 4 o'clock, concealed under an untucked tshirt. This is pretty much my EDC.

Starting Par: 1.7
Lowest Par achieved: 1.3
Ending Par: 1.6

Gun: M&P FS 9
Holster: Ludus Magnus MMA carried AIWB under T-shirt
Location: Indoor Range
Target: IDPA 8" Center

Starting PAR: 2.0
Fastest PAR with a Hit: 1.2
Final PAR: 1.3

My fastest hit of the day was 1.14, which is my fastest draw to first shot with a hit to date. Pretty pleased with it, but more excited about getting some consistent 1.21 hits. Now if only I could fix my damn reloads, hahaha.

Target used (USPSA A-Zone)
Start position (open holster)
Starting PAR (1.40)
Lowest PAR with a hit (1.1)
Final PAR (20th draw) (1.2)

Took video and noticed a lot of slop in draw.

I haven't done drills for years and only shoot during the monthly IPSC/IDPA match so it was an eye opener to see how poor my technique has become via the video.

Looking forward to making these weekly drills a regular practice session.

I thought I was faster too, LOL!

8.5x11
Glock 17 Concealed, CCC Shaggy, Untucked Polo
Starting Par: 1.5s
Lowest Successful Par: 1.0s
Final Par (Successful): 1.0s

My final shot was a .96s, which is a smoking run for me. I bounced around between 1.1s and 1.0s a lot, I was getting very consistent hits around the 1.05s mark. When I was unsuccessful, and had to up the par, I was usually late by less than .05-.08s.

Target used - 8.5x11 paper
Start position - concealed IWB at 4 o'clock, Glock 17 Gen4
Starting PAR - 2.0
Lowest PAR with a hit - 1.6
Final PAR (20th draw) - 1.5 miss

Used the turning target system at the NRA range to do the par times. My first draw was a miss so I went up to 2.1 but spent most of the time around 1.6/1.7. Got to 1.5 twice and missed twice.

Need to work on this among many other things. I usually do something similar to this drill, but shoot two instead of one, 25 times. After many years shooting M&P's, didn't think it would take long to switch to Glock but just don't have the same comfort level yet. It's coming slowly.

Target: IPSC A-zone
Start Position: Concealed (open front concealment), M&P9 Pro.
Starting Par: 2.0 sec.
Lowest Par with hit: 1.60 sec.
Final Par: 1.50 sec. with late hit.

I only had one miss, my problem was late shots. I had a hard time letting go of a clear sight picture to get my shots off in time, but once I started getting the hang of it and saw how little sight reference I needed to get the hits at that distance and with that size target it went smoother. My fastest hit was 1.45 seconds on a 1.60 Par. I just couldn’t pull it off on a 1.50 Par.

Lately I have been working on my grip. I feel being focused on this prevented a faster hit on the 8". However, it paid off on the following DotW that I will post results for latter.
