View Full Version : Maxim 9… as a training mule

I have some land and a full range set up.

There are some neighbors who are cool, but I still don’t want to wear out my welcome.

So working up my suppressed options to practice stage planning for USPSA.

I have a lot of guns that I used at one point but don’t currently… but then sometimes I circle back to them.

Behold… my Maxim 9 CO training analogue….

92015

Weighs very close to my CO gun.

92016

Why the goofy magazine?

It helps neutral balance the heavy muzzle.

By picking mag length and extension weights, I can change the balance of the gun to neutral.

Dremel cut the holster for optic, put an RMSx on it and screwed it to an extra BOSS and belt.

92017

Surgical tape is to keep the mag from rattling around.

Almost forgot… the Maxim has a grip angle almost identical to the CZ…

That’s a serious flex.

You know… I like it.

The whole Maxim idea was really cool, but I could never find much of a “it’s $1800 cool” value.
JCN deserves some cred for out of the box thinking.

You got beat on this one. Somebody around here used to shoot actual matches with it.
What the story on a Shadow 2 mag extension. Looks a little short for CO but I don't know them all.

So I tried it and it’s still a horrible gun, lol.

When I don’t shoot it for a while I always think it’s maybe not as bad as I remember… but then it is. Ha!

Neighbors will just have to suck it up and listen to my freedom seeds from my actual CO gun.

Whatever happens JCN has got
The Maxim gun and we have not

The trigger is gritty and sticky, which is the main issue with the enjoyment of the gun.

So I decided to take a deep breath and fully disassemble it.

With the hopes of polishing it.

One of my general break in philosophies is to run the gun dry when new and see where the wear patterns are, then polish them.

Because there are so many “fiddly parts” as Clusterfrack would say, I hadn’t gotten around to it.

I think the trigger bar is probably the main culprit. See the wear marks and how many hot spots there were / are?

I am proud of JCN and support him being a gunsmith when he grows up

Seriously, love thes posts, appreciate his work, and I really want a Maxim.

In addition to where the trigger bar was rubbing, the sear cage to frame rub was aggressive in this notch.

Polished the U and it’s much smoother.

94149

Polished a bunch of other stuff.

Excited to put it back together.

Much improved. Still a little grit that I know where it’s coming from, so if I care in the future I can knock it down further.

Good enough for now. Definitely better.

It always amazes me when a really good concept is sunk by shitty execution and lack of attention to detail.

Kind of yes.

I have a couple RDB rifles, a couple P32s and a KSG shotgun….

They make some cool stuff.

You know that’s right up my alley lol.

I really should get an XYZ table, lathe and 3D printer.

So one of the issues with the Maxim 9 is failure of the sear to release the striker.

This developed after I had it for a while and persisted despite cleaning.

The trigger feel is better but the failures still persisted.

I pulled up this schematic:

94214

And then took a polishing head on a Dremel to smooth the grooves in the striker and sear mating edges.

94213

Much much better now.

Might even be passable!

I have a theory that a weapons factory employee from circa 2135 accidentally traveled back in time and somehow linked up with Kel-Tec. Except this person was from marketing, so they can describe the weapons and how cool they are, but have no idea about any of the advanced materials or engineering.

Developing Country manufacturing.

I remember the parking lot… Check out the shambles of vehicles the employees drive in. There is a strong high school auto shop meets Florida Man vibe, but not in any the positive ways that could be manifest.

The great irony is it is up the road from Knight’s Armament, which is more on the other extreme.
