Got this in my email last week and finally got around to checking out the page: Maglite LED Drop-ins, Upgrades, Conversions, and Accessories (https://malkoffdevices.com/collections/maglite-drop-ins-and-accessories?sort_by=created-descending)
I've got either a 3 or 4-D cell in bought used from a pawn shop I worked at in the early-mid-90s that looks great but after playing with the pocket rockets the last couple of years [old man shaking fist at the sky](dang you P-F!)[/old man shaking fist at the sky], it sorely needs an upgrade in the output department. The last time the batteries died I tossed them but never bought replacements so there's no batteries in it to count. If I measure it, is there a chart somewhere I can cross reference to figure out if mine is a 3 or 4 cell?

Those new Maglite adapters for Malkoff drop-ins look great!
A 3-cell Maglite is 4.5 volts, the 4-cell is 6 volts. Most of the Malkoff drop-ins offered are fine with either. Personally, I'd roll with the M61HOT.

My 4-D cell body/tube is right at 10" with the endcap that holds the batteries in. Not including the head / bulb / reflector. A 3-D cell will be noticeably shorter.
The Malkoff upgrade was amazing.

Thanks! I'm trying to figure out if I can use the 21700 adapter but I really think I have a 4 cell. I'll go measure it shortly.
EDIT: Hmmm, maybe it’s a 3 cell after all?

D-cells are 2.42" long, so yes that is a 3-cell.
Yep.
I measured without removing the head so the threaded portion in your pic wasn't included. Like he said, 3-cell for sure.

The Malkoff upgrade was amazing.
I upgraded my kid's "big" Mag-Lite and put a crenellated bezel on it since the size and weight of the thing makes it a better improvised club than a utility flashlight. It's still oversized, but at least it isn't a feeble light thrower anymore.

FTA: I put a Malkoff upgrade in my own ancient 3-cell Maglite and also invested in adapters to use 9 AA lithium primaries if need be.
Not Malkoff-related, but I used the same adapters to some old GI angle-head flashlights so they take 6 AA lithium primaries, which work better than alkaleakers for glovebox and winter use.
Yes, I AM odd.
