Short version is we’re here for Memorial Day weekend +1. Any favorite (fresh) seafood restaurants you would recommend? Could be fancy, or not—we’re not fussy—where do the locals eat?

No idea, but here's my universal system:

Find a moderately well dressed woman in her late 30's to mid 40's, give or take, who is overweight but not enormously so. Ask her for her recommendation. This has worked for me in multiple cities in multiple countries in multiple cultures without fail.

Do not go for a very overweight woman, you'll likely get a buffet.
Do not go for for a cheaply dressed woman or a woman much younger, you'll get a chain restaurant.
Do not go for a much older woman, you'll get a chain restaurant that's bland and probably called Cracker Barrel.

People think I'm joking, but I am dead serious. It's how I've discovered so many good local restaurants.

The best meal(s) I ever had was when one of my group of engineers asked the motel clerk:
"Where does your boyfriend take you for dinner... when he can afford it?"
Instant response.

I try to find the local firehouse and ask those guys. Having to eat on shift and run calls to to the establishments give us a very huge advantage in not only know what is good but also what is clean. That goes for hotels/motels also.

I don't live in FL but I have a finely honed taste for seafood. I can grill or smoke it to perfection. We have an abundance of it here so I get a lot of practice.

My preference when eating seafood in a restaurant would be anything south of the border. I've never been to S. America but I've had lots of seafood in MX. They do fish very well because the coastal resort towns eat a lot of fish and cater to a American tourists, or used to.

My point is, seek out a restaurant that is Hispanic. Most everyone eats beef/pork/chicken in the US and have no taste for seafood.

I'd try this one if I were I were looking. If you ask a plump Italian woman she will direct to the best Italian restaurant in Palm Beach. I could persuaded.

Ha, thanks. When I was still a detective, my partner and I decided to take a little roadtrip together and went down to Memphis on our days off. I'd told him about 'the system' but he always thought I was joking. I used 'the system' with a lady on that trip. She was a little older then I'd normally ask, but we were at a casino in Tunica (he plays blackjack and got comp'd our rooms) and there weren't a lot of options that I thought were locals. She said something along the lines of: "I'm supposed to recommend a place on site, but if you really want good BBQ go to Memphis BBQ Company." He had to admit that not only was I serious about 'the system', 'the system' works. I've been back to that restaurant every time I've passed through Memphis since, and it remains a favorite. Also discovered a great crepe place in Paris, seafood place in Barcelona, Navajo place in Arizona, etc. It is 100% to date.
