Back when I read magazines like Guns & Ammo and American Handgunner -- when the sky was dominated by pterosaurs and I had to walk uphill to school both ways -- their pages were filled with ads for beside holsters : holsters that would attach to the side of the bed for quick access in the middle of the night.

Are those still a thing in 2022 ?

And if so

• which ones would you recommend, and

• which ones would you recommend staying away from ?

Thanks.

Seems like a waste of money to me. My pistol sits on the nightstand next to my bed in the Holster I use to carry it during the day. My rifle sits next to the same nightstand with a Brownells fastport , that's what I'm going for if I need a firearm in my home anyway.

Coincidentally I've been thinking about getting one. This thread may motivate me to finally take action. The link above is a start, but not sure its the best out there.

The appeal to me for a bedside holster is that its a little more low viz than putting my gun on a night stand.

I mounted a Safariland ALS holster to the inside face of the nightstand drawer using their quick locking system years ago. It works very well for me. I like that it's a retention holster, it's always exactly where I expect it to be and it's not hanging off the edge of the bed frame, which seemed like a really awkward and non-intuitive place to put a holster. If my drawers were too shallow for that setup, I'd probably just use a non-retention holster and put it in the drawer at night.

This isn't for me, or any other highly-trained tactical enthusiast, but for somebody's elderly mother.

1) She does not carry the gun, the gun stays next to her bed

2) The gun is currently kept in a box on the nightstand, but

2a) it gets moved around (cleaning the nightstand, when looking for stuff, etc.), and not always put back where it should be

The primary goal here is to keep the gun in a consistent place.

The kids and grandkids are fully grown and not living there, so child safety is not a consideration.

My nightstand handgun is just my normal carry gun in its holster but with an extended magazine inserted. If you’re running a dedicated bedside home defense handgun I like the idea of a Safariland holster on a QLS. You can mount a QLS plate to the side of your bed and then attach a holster to it with the QLS fork. That way it’s quick to take off the whole holster with the gun in it to throw in your safe when you leave the house for the day, leaving the plate attached to the bed frame.

ETA: looks like you clarified the situation while I was typing. If this person’s handgun is something Safariland offers an ALS or GLS holster for, my suggestion would still work. Depending on how mechanically inclined the person is, you might have to mount the QLS plate onto the bed for her.

For a dedicated HD gun, either for this elderly user or for someone who just doesn’t use their carry gun for HD, I’d agree with mounting an OWB holster to the bed with one of the various QD/multi attachment/universal belt systems. Preferably on the other side of the bed from the door and with anything else that can somewhat conceal it without hindering access.

If this was me I’d opt for retention as mentioned. For someone who isn’t an enthusiast, I can see a case for avoiding that.

I think it’d be a fairly easy DIY project, either mounting directly to a bed frame or using a relatively large piece of wood or metal go go under the mattress and then have the attachment point mounted to that at a 90 degree angle. I think I remember seeing something like that marketed, maybe by Alien Gear, and I’m sure a better version could be worked up by someone with basic carpentry skills.

Before I had kids, I wrapped a belly band around a couple of posts of the headboard, so it was at least partially hidden behind my pillows. My carry gun went there at night.

I have a QLS plate bolted to the platform for our bed.

I've found over the years the bed frame is the limiting factor more than the actual holster. For quite some time I had an RDR kydex holster for my G17L with light mounted to the headboard. It was a sleigh bed so there was a dead space between the area where the mattress was and the wall. I never mounted the belt loops on the holster shell, instead using cable ties and the rivet holes to mount the holster to the bed. The benefit of the sleigh bed was this left it out of sight to anyone walking in the room, but still quick to get to when in bed.

These days I've become a fan of mounting a QLS receiver plate to a fixed location and then I can use any of my ALS holsters (or my T-Rex Ragnarok if using a suppressed pistol) that has a QLS fork. But again, the design of the bed frame, and material (wood, pressed board, metal, etc.) will be something to consider.
