Nice pic. He's younger than I and a big guy (bulldoggers have to be big).

Great photos! Rodeo guys are all kinds of tough. This guy is a friend of my wife's family :
http://www.ksat.com/news/Leon-Coffee-recovering-from-serious-illness/-/478452/14156806/-/117n9uh/-/index.html
We saw him at a 4th of July rodeo after his recovery, 60-something years old, just recovered from a deadly illness, and out there taunting bulls.

My older brother was an amateur Bulldogger and Calf Roper, and my cousins team rope on the PRCA circuit. These pics just brought back all sorts of memories.

So we're at a rodeo tonight, and in addition to the usual kid's calf scramble they had one for adults. I didn't participate, but caught myself wondering how many calves I could drop with my G17 before everyone else got ahead of me ;)

My cousin's father (my uncle of course) was the PRCA Bulldogging champion for '75.

Cool stuff
Just looking at that photo makes my back hurt.

A bit OT... I was in Vegas a few years ago during NFR finals. I was trying to sweet-talk the pit boss for some comp tickets. At one point I asked the dealer at my table if it got any extra-rowdy with all the cowboys in town. Turns out the Dealer was a former barrel racer. She said "No. Did YOU ever see a Cowboy with enough money for gambling in Vegas? I've dated lots of cowboys and I can tell you... They're all BROKE"... :D

My family and I enjoy the rodeo... Fort Worth stockyards does a fun interpretation of a rodeo that we go see every now and then. Actually just bought a Groupon for the Stockyards Rodeo yesterday. The more serious rodeo events near here are at the Will Rogers center (coming up in January)and at Resistol Arena in Mesquite. Went to WRC a few years ago. Also have been to several smaller rodeos in NM and CO, just happened to be in the area when they were going on .. Always a good time and family-friendly.

Lesson: Anyone tough enough to (repeatedly) ride a bull or a bronc, or wrastle a steer.... Don't mess with them.

Best of luck to your cousin.

I ve learned to love Rodeo. When my daughter was riding her trainer was competing in Rodeo queen competitions so we went to a lot of events to watch her compete. She ended up winning Ms. Rodeo USA a couple years ago at the Finals. Spending time with Rodeo fans and people gives you a great deal of inspiration and makes you have a little bit of restored faith in this country. A place where EVERYONE stands and removes their hats for the National Anthem, where people tend to be respectful to each other and are all about wholesome good fun. Truly a great sport with athletes that define TOUGH".

Tough work.

I know a guy who lost his right nut to a bull ride gone bad. Seriously.

http://www.therodeohand.com/ Les Shepperson and his horse Dillon, along with hazer Luke Branquinho, continued their consistency in the eighth round and head to the last two nights in a good position to win a world title. Shepperson made no money Thursday night but his 4.7 second run was enough to maintain a lead in the average and extend his #1 position to a little more than six seconds faster than his nearest competitor.

Nice, he makes it look easy! I'm just a city boy, but I enjoyed live rodeo when I lived in TX. Good luck, Les!

He won the rodeo but his buddy (who he trains and competes with) won the championships. He did quite well.

Injuries and getting married slowed him down. You can cheer for our family friend Jason Miller (http://trib.com/sports/rodeo/pro-rodeo-after-near-miss-last-year-miller-eager-for/article_91488956-67fd-5f6b-9cee-dfdd625bc085.html). I was just riding with him a few weeks ago.

Dude is big, even for a rodeo cowboy. Great guy.

Last time I was in Wyoming, i saw my cousin's old partner (a fellow world champion in steer wrestling/bulldogging). The words "big motherfucker" describe him quite well. Great guy.

I was never much into rodeo despite being born in Pendleton, Oregon and living within a 30 minute drive until I was 28. The round-up is within a week of my birthday too. I do really like Pendleton whiskey though, way better than Jack Daniels (there, I said it). And I really liked The Cowboy Way. And all them Garth Brooks rodeo songs.

As much as I enjoy (watching!) steer wrestling, I prefer tie-down roping a bit more.
-- 1. Because roping is pretty cool. and
-- 2. There's more "stuff" to get right... And the horse has to do its part right too..

I don't think folks can appreciate just how BIG the steer wrestling guys are from watching on TV. They'll show you the guy by himself in the frame, with no external points of reference. When Bear Pascoe (former Giants TE on their Superbowl-46-winning team) was being introduced yesterday, there he was on the giant monitor all by himself. You could tell he was a big dude, but what really drove it home was when he whipped out a football and held it up for the camera. His hand covered half the ball, literally. Not "his fingers reached across half the ball"... When he held out the ball, you could only see half of it. I would not want to get in the way of Bears' paw.

If you've never been to a rodeo, you're missing out. Even the weekend tourist rodeo in the Fort Worth Stockyards is a good time. Bring a date and catch a band at Billy Bob's after the rodeo. Or bring your kids and let them try to grab the ribbon off the tail of the sheep or the head of a calf... Good times.

Resurrecting this old thread..... Figured it was as good a place as any to post this.

Anyone been watching the NFR (https://www.nfrexperience.com/nfr2020/) (National Finals Rodeo) this past week?
Wife and I have been watching every night. Some nights I even manage to stay awake for the bull riding. :o

Tonight is the final round... Starts at 6:45 Central time, broadcast live (no tape delay!!!) on RFDTV (https://www.rfdtv.com/story/42772239/2020-nfr-programming-when-and-where-to-watch).

In this incredibly depressing year for live sports, the NFR has been a breath of fresh air. Moved it from Vegas to Ranger Stadium (Globe life Field) in Arlington, TX due to covid. Live audience. Tailgate party outside in the Stockyards (weather has been great here except for Friday). Nobody bringing their social justice issues to the field. Just some ass-kicking rodeo.

If you get RFDTV on your cable feed, it's a must watch. Coors Banquet Beer optional.
