On 8/28, Sheriff Herbert Proffitt, a Korean War veteran who served more than fifty years as a peace officer including stints as the Monroe County (KY) Sheriff and the Tompkinsville (KY) Chief of Police, was gunned down in his driveway will getting his mail (allegedly) by a thug whom Sheriff Proffitt has arrested several times over the years dating back to the 1970s. Accounts state that the thug had the citations from that first arrest in his possession when he was arrested for this cowardly act.
Sheriff Proffitt had retired in 2000 but returned to the Sheriff's Office as a Bailiff retiring finally in 2009 at the age of 79.
I wrote this article (http://chiefweems.wordpress.com/2012/08/30/sheriff-proffitt-a-tribute-and-a-reminder/) tonight after reading of the incident. It's not a particularly eloquent work, and it doesn't convey all of the points I would like to make right now, but I just couldn't hold it in to do complete justice to the subject.
