Saw one at the LGS and was super impressed. At a match earlier this week, heard several competitors speaking enthusiastically about them. Bought one to mess with. Took it out of the box with the factory irons sights and shot a perfectly regulated three inch group at 25 yards with it. Will shoot it with an optic next range session.

JAYsus help me. Here we go again! What's the over-under on how long it takes GJM to get us all fired up about this, then tell us why we wasted our money on it? :)

Seriously, I'm safe because that looks of that gun make it a pass for me, but I will be interested to hear what you think this does for you that a G34 or X5 doesn't.

I am not sure it does anything better, but it is a $650 pistol you can take out of the box and compete with. I had never owned a Canik before. They seem to keep improving their products and have a loyal following. Plus, people love Nils.

Here is a review.

I have had two range sessions with the Rival, since mounting an SRO. Here are some thoughts.

Accuracy is excellent, on par with a Gen 5 Glock with good ammo. Significantly more accurate than a 320. The stock trigger is excellent, feels in shape like an Apex FSS. Very short positive reset that almost throws your finger forward. Magazine and mag well shape make for good reloads. Forward serrations are excellent. For iron sight shooters, it comes with a Dawson looking front FO and an adjustable rear. Optics mounting system seems well thought out. No malfunctions. For now, it fits in a Comp TAC International for the PDP 4.5. After bench marking it with my AXG 320, I like it enough I bought a second one. They are dirt cheap for a pistol ready to go out of the box.

I seem to recall P.E. Kelley having a video with a few Caniks and they seemed to do fine.

Is that considered an "OFM magwell" and illegal for production and CO?

No OFM or aftermarket external magwells.
Internal
magwell dimensions may be increased.
Aftermarket external flaring is prohibited.
Markings inside the magwell are allowed.

There is a removable external mag well, that would be illegal for CO/Production, but the mag well opening without the external removable mag well is still generous and well shaped.

Awesome, excited to hear your thoughts as you continue to shoot it.

My Caniks have all been great. All of them have been very reliable and just an unbeatable value. I personally see no reason for me to swap out my TP9SFX w/Freedomsmith trigger for a Rival, but if I were starting over, I definitely would choose the Rival. Someone can buy a Rival, a couple of extra mags, pick up some mag pouches, belt, use the new stock holster the Rival comes with, and have a gun they can make GM with for like $800 bucks total.

Talking guns with an Uncle, he showed me a picture of one of these and told me one of his friends bought it. Cheaper than a Glock, and just as good was the description.

I think I eye rolled. Maybe that was in haste, but I have a hard time believing in another Glock killer.

Can anyone explain the cut outs in the slide at the muzzle? I have seen this before in Gucci polymer gun builds. I dont get what it is and what is the supposed reasoning for it?

And there is an ongoing debate as whether taking weight out of the slide is a good or bad thing. Regardless, this slide cycles well with the dot.

I respect this, but there is also a strong argument to be made that you are supporting concentration camps in Xinjiang every time you buy a product from China. Good luck avoiding that. Canik is an independently owned company that is not state-run. The Canik USA reps are good dudes and they sponsor USPSA. Turkey is also providing Bayraktar's to Ukraine (another delivery yesterday) and are, for all of their ills, still a NATO ally. So, "its complicated" and I don't think this should really influence anyone's purchasing decisions. It is hard to live in a globalized economy and not run into these types of issues. I find the Canik's to be an unbeatable value for competitive shooting; and, like GJM mentions, Nils is cool AF.

(Obviously in no way a defense of the policies of the Turkish government - I just don't think this sub-forum is the place for these discussions)

I resemble that comment.

Got a Romeo 3 Max mounted on number 2 Canik, using the plate from Fast Toys. (Plate marked 06 from Canik not working for me). Also got the Taylor Freelance back strap, which adds just over 4 ounces.

I find GJM’s willingness to try new things, run them hard, and report honestly on his findings, to be of great benefit to those of us with more of a ‘wait and see’ approach to new stuff.

It doesn't have to be a Glock killer. It just has to be another option.

Having options in the gun world is never a bad thing. If the gun is reliable then the "just as good" nothing is relative to the individuals needs and wants.

Face it, in our life times, no semi auto pistol is likely to be a Glock killer. There is such an established Glock ecosystem, Glock will be the or at least a dominant choice for decades to come.

What the Canik Rival is, is a $650 pistol that you can compete with out of the box with excellent accuracy, an excellent trigger, excellent magazines, a very good magwell, excellent iron sights, an excellent optic mounting system, and excellent reliability and durability, that can be shot at a high level. I am thinking of shooting Production with one.

I agree.

We are very quickly entering into the age where the Glock is far from the only reliable pistol. There are simply so many damn reliable options these days.

When I talk to new shooters these days and they ask me about what pistol they should get I have to basically use two hands for all of the good suggestions I can make for them. Back in the day it was essentially two pistols, the Glock or the M&P for a modern striker fired polymer pistol.

Out at matches last weekend, a number of strong local shooters are switching to the Rival. Others are starting with them, but a scarcity of Canik MecGar mags right now is an obstacle.

Tony at JM is getting set up to make holsters (range and concealment).

Thanks, that is a solid testimonial considering how intense the sport is out there, so for CO I am guessing they use some sort of mag extension to get to 140mm and maybe 23 rounds?

yes and yes, Taylor Freelance.

Stock gun, with a Taylor Freelance heavy backstrap and TF mag extensions. W74 heavy guide rod with Wolff 15 pound Commander spring. Sig Romeo 3 Max or XL.

Well I'll never buy one no matter how good it is because I had one of their cheaper models before and reversing the mag release was one of the most frusterating thing I've done on a gun in a long long time.

I move all of my magazine releases to the opposite side of the gun so I can use my trigger finger to release a magazine.

If anyone else is a lefty or does the same good luck and prepare for frusteration.

I read through this thread yesterday and poked around the TF website. The TF website mentioned some of the Canik parts fit certain B92 mags. Do these take B92 mags? Or can B92 mags be modded?

Coincidentally I stopped at a LGS to make a layaway payment and they had a SFx in the used case for $400. It feels weird in my hand. It’s not like a G17 or my 5” M&P. Not sure if I want to pursue this or not…

I thought it was but I may not have looked close enough. It looks like the entire rear sight assembly comes off to mount a dot but I didn't pay any attention to the front of the slide to see if it had the cutouts, etc.

One more thing to add to that list. An IMSI 6# Glock striker spring to replace the factory Canik spring which is apparently much heavier. I had frequent failures to go into battery, something some of the folks on Enos had noted with the W74rod /15lb commander recoil system, that cleared it up for several of them, me as well. The gun tracks very well. When I get started back up on CO in our club matches it will be the one.

If I were doing it again I might just get the TF backstrap weight and basepads and call it good with the factory internals. This is a nice gun so far. Running a 6 moa SRO which works well for me. If it holds up, might have to get a second one at some point down the road to be the new production gun.

I have zero experience with other Caniks but on first impressions, Nils did a good job coaching the engineers for this one.

That being said, he has gotten to the point where he loves pretty much everything he tries. Maybe that is just that he makes good choices on what to test.

Checked with my LGS Friday. They said their distributors were just starting to see some and it would probably be a couple of weeks before they got any in. They are going to save me one.

FWIW it appears the Beretta mec gars are literally the same tube with angles and everything, just that the cut out is in a different place. I have no idea if they can be modded but im asking myself the same thing.

Look at the difference between the PDP and Rival. I really despise the flat on the beaver tail on the Walther. Canik has rounded that whole area which allows you to get quite a bit higher on the pistol.

Just to let people know Canik is building a factory in Florida.

As soon as I tried the trigger and looked down the sights of the Canik TP9 Elite SF I was hooked that it was in Patriot Brown was a big plus. Best color IMHO. Picked up 2 more of the Elite SF. Another for me and one for a brother. Also have a an Elite SC in Patriot Brown a Mete MC9 in black. Last and newest is a Canik SFX Rival S in chrome. All triggers are great the fiber optic sights excellent the fat dot are good. Trigger pull on all the Elites is around 3.5 the Rival S is 2.5 while the MC9 is around 5 which shows Canik is paying attention to it being a carry pistol. All run great so far as long as you don't run the low power 115 fiocchi dynamic range. That is some garbage ammo.

Right off the bat I shot the Elite SC better than my CZ P10 S as well as shooting the MC9 better than the Sig P365
