wo drivers are facing charges after a chaotic road rage encounter on a North Carolina highway was captured on video, according to state law enforcement officials.

The nearly two-minute video posted on Facebook just after 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9, showed a white van and black sedan swerving in and out of traffic before a North Carolina State Trooper caught up to them. The person recording, identified by WAVY as Pete Denny, provided colorful commentary throughout.

Crazy driving. Glad they got caught, but have to wonder how many are out there not getting caught.

I think people have become so accustomed and comfortable with cars they don't realize the potential danger they face. That is unless they've been involved with an MVA, or have to deal with them or their aftermath.

Years and years ago I was into NASCAR. During one of the weekly radio shows they were interviewing Jeff Burton, a well-respected and good driver at the time, I believe he hailed from Virginia. The host asked him if he ever got a little aggressive on the interstate with people cutting him off or him wanting to pretend that he's racing.

His response was that he was one of the most timid drivers on the highway there ever was. He never did anything like that at all. He said he'd rather get in a car wreck at 150 miles an hour in one of his stock cars rather than a 30 mile an hour crash in a regular motor vehicle with just a seatbelt and airbag. He had seen enough crashes and experienced enough to know the forces involved.

Question for our L.E.O. crowd; would you treat that as a felony stop with a callout?

Doubt it. Maybe a call back, but not a true felony stop.

The driver of the white Nissan van is Jerry Ray Wyatt of Eden, NC. Normally, I respect people’s privacy in the face of a mistake, but this guy deserves to be made famous for the number of lives that he risked. Plus, this pretty much happened in my backyard on a road that my wife drives on frequently. Best that I can tell, this dipshit still has a Facebook presence. Although it appears that the previously drove for a living, I can’t tell if he is still employed. As far as I’m concerned, he has forfeited his right to ever operate a motor vehicle and should get used to walking and biking to get from point A to B for the rest of his life.

Driver of the dark Mazda is Joshua Ian Livesay, 25, of Mayodan, NC. I can’t tell how much of a victim he was in this, but he should probably go to jail too simply for being a guy driving a Mazda CX-5.

1.) The level of stupidity that comes out of some people never ceases to amaze me.
2.) That sure seems like a good way to get shot.

It seemed at times the white van was being used as a weapon in an attempt to make the dark Mazda crash…

Might want to cool off a little before you start throwing people in jail—that is definitely not a Mazda CX-5.

10/10 for the commentary.

Nope, not if they stopped for the overheads.

But Reckless Driving is an arrestable offence here, so, contact, return to run the license, smile and put the clipboard on the hood of the unit, and call back...😎😜😝😁

No but like Lon I’d probably tell him to get out and walk back to me.

I'd agree no high-risk stop, but I wouldn't waltz up there just because he stopped for the lights, which is what it looked like that trooper was fixing to do.

Assholes gonna asshole. I try not to be around when two of them meetup.

Just yesterday a geezer in one of those 80's curvy Corvettes zoomed past me on the right, in a right turn only lane, then through the intersection, just (barely) ahead of the panel truck I was following.

I mean, this was in North Venice, on Tamiami Trail/US 41, where a reportable traffic jam on Wave consists of maybe five cars.

Reminds me I need to do a tech refresh on my Dash Cams.

This may have made the rounds already, but here's another pretty epic recent one:

That is a Mazda 3, probably 2009ish.

I'll also see myself to jail as I drive a Mazda CX-5 :(

It’s all cool man. I understand that you need the extra cargo space to store your gear from cheerleading practice. And it’s convenient that the center console is big enough for your Ladysmith. Just be glad that you aren’t driving a Miata which would require that you register as a sex offender. ;)

OK guys. I’m only kidding. I thought you would all get the fact that I was joking about the video narrator referring to the driver of the Mazda as “her” and “lady” but I suppose that nobody was picking up what I was putting down. Apparently, joking about guy’s Mazdas on P-F is like cracking on HKs. I’ll crawl back into my hole and you gents carry on.

I was an absolute idiot when I was a teenager, and had absolutely no clue what I was doing or what was possible to happen if things went wrong -because they never do go wrong since I don't mess up, in my adolescent brain.

Then I started working around actual adults. Later I bought a v8 stand and put a supercharger on it, and it put down over 425 ft lbs at 2,000 RPM. My ex drove it once and refused to do anything but keep the RPM's around 3,000 because that's what her Honda Fit drove around at. I truly was terrified of her hitting the throttle slightly too hard and wrapping us around a telephone pole, and she was going a bit under the speed limit at the time. I used to know every spec of every vehicle I had and worked on, from engine ratings to torque specs and clearances.

Now I have a Subaru Forester, one of the newer, bland, model bloated ones. I honestly can't tell you the horsepower or torque ratings on it. It's just a car now to me. And that's perfectly fine, because my daily driver is no longer a hobby car. I'd rather have a motorcycle to do minor touring on than another fast car, if we're being totally honest. Mid-Ohio isn't too far from me, and taking a driving course from them is reasonably priced with a rental vehicle, and will teach me far more, with more entertainment, than anything else behind the wheel.

The more I drive, the less I have any desire to do anything but hit cruise control, stay right, and listen to podcasts.

In a perfect world the white truck and black car get a ticket too. No reason to hammer it up to the next car and block the road ragers after they pass on the right the first time. I've never understood why people feel the need to try and dictate how fast other people drive.

I was always taught to let people go and flush out the speed traps down the road...

Yeah, I was taught that too. As long as you're not the fastest car on the road at one particular time, speeding isn't likely to get you in too much trouble. Kind of like the old don't need to run faster than the lion, only faster than the other gazelles line of thinking.

I mostly prefer the extra cargo space for an extensive shoe collection that I keep on hand at all times. I never know if its flats or heels and I MUST have the correct colors!

Not long before Covid, wife texts me a Pic from the Avis? lot in SJC. What's she driving? GT500. She said she had a hard time not chirping the tires and giggling every time the light turned green.

I drive a Volvo these days (after selling my beloved Mazda 3 5 speed), so you know I'm all about driving slow while streaming Barry Manilow and Bach concertos (#not).

My roomie rented a CX-5 (insurance company rental) while her car was in the body shop last month for ten days. It seemed like a nice little SUV. I don't care for the massive center console, but they seem to standard everywhere.

This, again, in a perfect world.

However the world isn't perfect. I know of one instance of road rage locally, where a driver pulled up along side of someone and pointed a gun at them. The person in the other car, pointed one back and the first car high tailed it out of there. This seems reckless to me, but it worked.

The second instance involved me personally. I was pulling up to a traffic light, summer, windows down, and the passenger in the vehicle next to me pulled out a gun from the glove box and pointed it at me, all while cussing and the driver saying, that's not him, that's not him. The lane thankfully opened up (people in front right turning on red) and I followed them rather quickly and headed in the direction of the police station, while the other car headed a different direction.

Question for our L.E.O. crowd; would you treat that as a felony stop with a callout?

No. I've stopped road ragers (including one where I saw the drink being thrown in a similar fashion to that video, but it was a big styrofoam cup and much more dramatic) and street racers and never treated it any differently than any other traffic related stop. Passenger side approach originally if possible, then a driver's side approach if I intend to do a DUI investigation or custodial arrest on the second approach.
