Here is little video of me shooting Finnish Mosin M39 at close range(25 meters).
M39 is basically a modified russian 1891/30 rifle. Changes are new barrel, better sights, stock, magazine and trigger. My rifle works quite well with stripper clips making loading faster.
M39 was widely used in Continuation war at 1941-1944.

As an unabashed fan of Finn Mosins, I heartily approve!

I had a 42 or 43 Sako for a while but like a lot of other milsurps it got away from me because I “needed” something else more. If I was restricted to collecting only one type of rifle, Finn Mosins would be at or near the top of the list.

Finn Mosins are fantastic, and one of the few Mosins I never snagged for myself. Great stuff!

Finland makes the finest factory built bolt action rifles out there (in my opinion).

Sako/Tikkas are outstanding.

My M39 is b-barrel version. It was propably assembled in 70' s altough it has 1942 stamp in barrel. Quite good shooter, smooth action.
I like to shoot old civil guard drills with it along with close range drills. Some of those drills are very challenging like shooting unsupported prone 5 shots at 100 meters to head figure target(20" wideX12"high). Time limit 30 sec. With open sights it is nice drill.

So why were you guys still putting together M39s in the 70s? We’re these rifle meant to arm the population in the event of occupation similar to the Yugo M48s?

I think Finland has not so many Rk 62's at that time. M39's were also used as training rifles and for artillery crews and so on. Actually Finland bought 200000 Ak's from Germany and China at 1990's. That was end of Finnish assault rifle manufacturing.

One of my early serious gun purchases was a Valmet M76. Since then I have been interested in Finish rifles and the pragmatic history of your service rifles (and military equipment for that matter). Later I would acquire one of the few FN DA Hi Powers to be imported into the US. I have found very little on how it was implemented in service (other than it was not well liked) in terms of holsters and other equipment issued with it.

Basically anything you can tell me about post WW2 Finish small arms is of interest.

Suddenly, I'm imagining AKs rebarreled and accurized by Tikka/Sako. Wonder what that would be like?

Finnish military still uses FN da pistols along with Glock 17.
East German and Chinese Ak's are storaged for war time and Valmet and Sako assault rifles are in every day use. Some older Rk's (7,62 RK 62M)are modernized. Mostly AR style buttstocks, enhanced safety selector, optic side rail, m-lok fore end and new muzzle device.

Military still use sniper rifle based on Mosin: 7,62 Tkiv 85.

How is the quality of the ammunition that is available in Finland? Is like the dubious surplus stuff from the old Warsaw Pact countries or the sweet surplus stuff like the 7.5 Swiss GP35 ammo?

Hi JakeL, beautiful rifle and good shooting.

May I ask how do you carry a loaded Mosing in the finnish military?

The safety is very awkward and slow.

I’ve drifted back to milsurps which is where I started almost 50 years ago now. The quality and inherent accuracy of many of these guns has stood the test of time. I have a number of them that will routinely keep up with modern tuned bolt guns...with factory shelf ammo to boot. All of this done in an era where slide rules and a fine, steady hand on the lathe ruled the day.

Bighoss...nice K11! The 1911 above can routinely ring steel at 600yds with the diopter sights, GP11 or hand loads, and my aging eyes. Not too bad for something that was built about the same time the Wright Brothers flew.

Ammo for Finnish defence forces is made by Lapua. Very high quality and expensive. I use in my Sako 92S Sako or Geco ammo. Lapua cost too much.

I dont know how Mosin safety was used or was it used at all. My uncle said that they work the bolt instead but I forget how they did it. Many civil guard drills started with safety on altough.

Had a huge Mosin collection. When people started paying stupid money for them it became time to find them new owners. The last one I sold, just last year, was my M39. It was in like new condition.

I like to have M28-30, true civil guard rifle. Nothing wrong with M/39 tho. And real Suomi KP-31 but that is kind of difficult in Finland.

I have an M28/30 Civil Guards rifle and an M39 which is fitted with a Russian PU scope. Firing handloads with the .309 diameter, 185 grain Lapua D46 bullet, assembled in Norma cases with 44 grains of RL15 accuracy is amazing, fully equal to my Winchester Model 70 Target .30-'06 or Type II accurized Garand back to 600 yards.

I can shoot 3,5" 5 shot groups at 150 meters with my M39. Those groups are from bench, not free hand. Pretty good because of my aging eyes. I wonder what that rifle is capable of. I use Sellier&Bellot 180 gr factory ammo. Most of my shooting is from unsupported prone and close range too.

What is that scope mount on your Enfield? I have a pristine No. 4 Mk2 from the Brit war reserves just sitting in my closet. A scope would be a great addition, and would inspire me to get it to the range more.

It’s an S&K. There are several others from both Bad Ace Tactical as well as the UK, but inventory seems sporadic on all of them but the S&K. Out of PA, good folks to deal with. It’s not 100% accurate, but close enough for my purposes. I found a better pic of the mount for you.

East German and Chinese folding stock Ak rifles are indeed used in armored troops and tank crews. Those rifles are little ligther than Rk 62.

There was one M/27rv on sale while ago at reasonable price 800€. Because of Finnish gun laws I couldn't buy that soon enough. We have to get gun permit first and then we can buy gun. It can take couple of weeks to get that permit.

Btw new video again. This time modified Bill drill at 7 meters. Good test of gun handling in rapid fire.
