I thought I'd start an ongoing thread to monitor my progress in uspsa/idpa competition. I'm just getting started so obviously my match results arent the most impressive.

I'll be linking scoresheets to all my uspsa matches good or bad. The idpa scoresheets get emailed to me and i cant figure out how to link them here. Maybe ill just cut n paste them and youll just have to take my word for it. Feel free to comment, advise, criticize or whatever floats your boat.

If anyone else wants to hijack this and post their scoresheets as well be my guest.

Im Ryan Smith for anyone who is interested in viewing the scores.

Shooting ssp/production M&P 9mm.

Heres the first match i did of any kind. 1st in ssp unclassified, 5th overall. I was pleasantly suprised. I managed to keep my cool for the most part but shot a little too fast and lost points. Had one catastrophic malfunction (didnt seat mag good enough) which cost me a couple seconds but otherwise the match went smoothly.

What i learned:

Watch the experts
Seat mag harder in practice even though empty mag goes in really easy
Practice tap'n'rack drills
Shoot only as fast as you can shoot zero's

Heres my first uspsa match. Lots of talented guys at this club and a really cool group to shoot with. I went way too fast for my skill level and ended up shooting lots of alpha charlies and even a few mikes. There was also a WHO stage which hurt me a bit and now ive added that to my practice regimen.

What i learned:

Slow down and shoot Alphas
1 sight picture, 1 shot
Practice SHO and WHO in dry and live drills
Clean mags between matches (air can works good)

Heres my next uspsa. Really cool stage design this time. There was prone shooting, a plate rack, lots of running, ducking, hosing close range targets etc.

Look at stage 1 for a good laugh. About 15 of us scored zero on that stage. There was a specific order u had to shoot 4 targets 6 times each. I mixed up the order and ended up getting 12 procedurals! Lol. But atleast i wasnt the only one. Also got a 180 warning so i need to work on keeping the gun forward during reloads. Could have been a DQ but the guy was cool about it.

My shooting was a little better this time but i still need to slow it down. My stage strategy, movement, and reloads are pretty solid for a noob but im shooting sloppy pairs and getting alpha charlies alot. Also had another malf due to not seating mag.

What i learned:

Slow down and shoot alphas! (i get excited when the timer goes)
Pay closer attention to the COF
Practice seating mag harder
More practice on tap'n'rack

You will always have issues seating the magazines. The ten round ban state magazines have very little give, as they are designed so that there is no way in hell you can insert 11 rounds.

Thus of us with standard capacity magazines, don't have that issue as we are downloading from the maximum capacity. And even at maximum capacity it might have more give because they don't have to be worried about someone sneaking in an extra round.

Yeah i have both types of mags and the 10s are definitely harder. I modified the 10s a little to make it easier but its still tough. The other problem is that i practice with empty mags and they go in super easy.

Its been a busy couple of months but i finally got to another uspsa match this morning. Its the first time ive been able to use my warrens in a match and they were great. Fiber front black rear really is the way to go for outdoor matches.

Id say i did decent on 4 stages and shot a perfect score on 1 of them (all alphas). My time on that stage wasnt amazing but it was average compared to the rest of my squad so i think itll help my overall a bit.

I saw 3 different guys with open guns each have multiple jams today, and not a single production gun failure which is pretty typical at these matches. Its pretty sad to see these expert shooters with victory badges on their range bags, sponsor shirts, cleats and the whole 9 yards getting killed because their $3k gun wont run...

Edit: scoresheet is up

My open and limited guns run well. In fact I shot a 6 stage classifier match yeasterday in both production and open and neither gun had an issue and I got moved up to B both divisions. Now I am B in everything but Revolver and Single stack. Will work on those now.
The only issue I have had with my open gun is when the big sticks mag spring gets weak and needs to be changed.

Congrats on reaching B! Im still 'U' lol.

Im sure lots of ppl have no problem with open guns but i sure see alot of jams and parts breakages. Do you have to do alot of maintenance and tweaking stuff to keep them running well?

I went to the uspsa classifier this sunday at ccpl. Had i known it was a classifier i probably wouldnt have gone because im not a uspsa member yet. But it was still fun i guess.

I did OK on most of the stages but being a classifier they were mostly stationary shooting. Stage 5 was ridiculous. String 1: 25 yds, 6 second time limit, 3 targets, 2 shots per target, mandatory reload, 2 shots per target again, each shot fired after time limit is a procedural....not easy in 6 seconds.

What i realized after shooting was that i should have taken 6 good shots, done the reload and just stopped beforw the timer. But without really thinking it through, i did what everyone else did instead...Hose off as many as u can and wait for the beep. Which resulted in about 9 sloppy shots and 1 procedural.
As the score card shows it was not a good stage for anyone.

My 5th uspsa was last weekend. My first ever Texas Star went fairly well. It was set at around 7 yds with no cover thankfully. I went top left right left right. Got the first 4 fast and easy without too much swinging and then stumbled on the 5th which was stationary at the bottom lol. I think i got too excited. But I still got it within the same mag so it didnt cost me an extra reload or anything.

My double taps have become more accurate thanks to some range time and an adjustment to my grip so ive started to speed up my game a little. Fiber optic sight has definitely helped with transition speed! I cant stress this enough. The red just grabs my eye so quick.

Im not a big press out guy, i typically index from the draw and the bright red sight facilitates that. But if im moving between ports, thats when i will press out because i move with the gun at high ready and it just sort of works out that way. So ill take advantage of the fact that i can see the sight before im extended. To me this makes more sense than pressing out all the time. To each his own, im still learning but right now that is my way.

Unfortunately i kinda blew a few stages due to miscounting on one (had to reload to make 1 more shot at the very end, doh!) and dropping a magazine on another. But other than that my shooting was good. I had one mike (hard cover) and only a couple charlies on each stage which i can live with.

There were a few poppers and plates which i tend to do well on. One popper didnt fall because i hit it low but they gave me credit for it because it was a little stiffer than the rest, and my club is pretty relaxed about the small stuff.

After watching the other top shooters here im starting to realize the importance of movement and transition speed. A couple charlies (even in minor pf) is a worthwhile sacrifice for a good time at my current skill level. The good shooters will do a whole array of 3-4 targets with no change in trigger speed between transitions. Its just a steady pop pop pop pop pop pop with quick movements in between.

We had some shoot on the move stuff too which ive gotten better at. Thanks to some todd jarrett vids i learned to walk with my feet in line while only my torso turns toward targets. Keeping my feet in line with each other prevents the sights from bobbing side to side as i walk.

Overall score was mediocre as usual but i attribute that to a couple screw ups more so than my overall performance. Middle of the pack is my realm for now and based on the skill of our top shooters im ok with that.
