View Full Version : Using the Milwaukee Packout system for gun stuff?

Has anyone here done this? I'm starting off with the 8426 rolling tool box (https://www.amazon.com/48-22-8426-Packout-Rolling-Tool-Box/dp/B076QLC84N/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=milwaukee+8426+packout&qid=1628273727&sr=8-8) and looking to build up on it. I'm thinking 48-22-8422 boxes (https://www.amazon.com/Milwaukee-48-22-8422-PACKOUT-Compact-Tool/dp/B084DBGJQB/ref=sr_1_42?dchild=1&keywords=milwaukee+848-22-8422+packout&qid=1628273810&sr=8-42) dedicated to each caliber/platform maybe. Thoughts?

I've got the RIGID system like this (https://www.amazon.com/RIDGID-Inch-Tool-Black-1-Item/dp/B0174NP7JE/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=rigid+rolling+tool+box&qid=1628274083&sr=8-1) that I load up for gun classes. It breaks apart in a way that it fits on a tailgate perfectly for outdoor classes, or rolls into the classroom or onto the range as a mobile work station.

There are also companies that pre-make foam inserts for gun stuff for them - I forget the link, but a friend was showing me at a match.

I literally just saw this exact system demonstrated as a replacement for the traditional shooting cart at Camp Perry last weekend. Dude loves and swears by it; I'm probably going to follow his lead when I find a GoRuck pack insufficient.

Another consideration (specific to the Packout system) - he purchased additional feet to mate with the Packout interface on the top and attached them to a hard-sided rifle case. The ability to attach your own equipment/customization (e.g. rifle case, an ammo can or two, or an MTM tray) is a pretty big plus for me. I'm not sure if the Ridgid or Dewalt rigs have that ability. I looked quickly when I was in Home Depot last week and it didn't *appear* to (I haven't looked into it that closely).

I set up one of the Rigid brand boxes as a go kit and lock box for road trips. Once I get another dedicated range buggy (Small hatchback SUV or similar,) I'll go back to loading up the MTM Ammo Crates in the trunk with all my ancillary range gear.

Check out https://kaizeninserts.com/ for custom foam inserts that you can cut out and use with the packout. I use them for my tools, reloading equipment, and was heading to guns when the packout system (two drawer units) became scarce.

Yep, like mine. Tough and rain/dust tight.

Yes, I’ve got a bunch of Packouts, and Stanleys. In fact one is full of Glock and AR field repair parts, I just keep it in the truck. It’s a very good system for both gun parts, and your actual work tools, bits and fasteners.

I'm looking at doing something like this. I want one case for each pistol, magazines and targets so I can grab the one(s) I want and go to the range. Been trying to find the perfect cases, packouts look a little too big but many other cases are too small and don't stack.

We rent a range from another agency and use a set of these to bring lube, markers, targets, dummy rounds, blue guns, staple guns, staples, a simple tool kit for working on steel targets, etc. It keeps everything in one place and organized. Best thing we've done in years. I don't think there is anything all that special about Milwaukee vs. DeWalt and Rigid. We bought the MIlwaukee, but the others would probably work fine.

How’s this working out? A month or so ago I bought one of the Stanley mobile work centers. I’ve since had two range trips doing agency training, and I taught a CCW class on a host’s property. I really like the concept of being able to have almost everything I need in one easy to move container but I’m not sure how long the Stanley unit is going to hold up. I’ve been seeing some decent deals on the Milwaukee components and I’m already thinking about upgrading.

I am a huge fan of Milwaukee. But the prices they get for the Packout stuff relative to my needs just doesn’t make sense to me. I know, and see, a lot of trade guys using it so I’m sure it’s good stuff.

Maybe if I was shooting in matches or classes where I had to park so far away from the line(s) as to make this necessary, but even then I’ve leaned a lot more minimalist for quite some time now.

ETA:
That said, am I to understand that two of the little guys fit on top of the one rolling base? And this thing is the same size as one of the little guys?

Using the smaller unwheeled Husky snap together versions just to get stuff into and back out of the 4runner since this stuff does not live there, three of them, one for targets (pasters, staplers, paint, eye and ear pro, etc. etc.), one for tools and timers and a cleaning kit, one for spare parts for multiple platforms plus batteries, working out well so far.

I am intrigued by the wheeled versions of these systems.

The cooler is interesting, I hadn’t thought of that. After posting last night, I also looked online at the Dewalt options. It looks like it would be an upgrade from the Stanley also, but there doesn’t seem to be as many options. It also looks like I could assemble a Dewalt system cheaper than Milwaukee.
I also thought about using parts of a system like that to get gear from parking lots to class venues from time to time.

right now I use a folding wagon, in part because in the FL heat I gotta have a cooler with drinks with me.

I've seen people use the collapsible garden carts that look like larger versions of Radio Flyer wagons. I have a heavy wire folding two-wheeled shopping cart that has a heavy liner in it, I use that for matches.

For those of you shooting Korth, Manhurin, Alchemy and SVI pistols, I’m going to insist that you go with Festool Systainers. Flexing on the poors, and all that.

I’m a big fan of Festool for woodworking, but so far I’ve resisted falling TOO deep down that rabbit hole. I will say their storage boxes stack and interlock very well. But various backpacks, bags and tote bags serve me well for trips to the range.

I have seen various rolling toolboxes on indoor and hard surface ranges, but if you are shooting in an action bay with dirt, gravel, or grass, you need bigger wheels like a garden cart.

I have a heavy wire folding two-wheeled shopping cart that has a heavy liner in it, I use that for matches.

My High-power friend has used one of those, calls it the "Old lady's cart" but he now has a rig with those bigger wheels.

It's wheels are too narrow for the softer sand roads/paths at our gun club. I got my wife one with wider wheels.

I wish I'd seen this one before buying either of them, I like the way it folds better plus the price. Couldn't catch the picture so just the link:

I'm pretty heavy into Milwaukee's M12 line for light duty remodeling, and I even use it a bit for production carpentry. I'm split between Makita and Milwaukee for my larger 18 volt platform tools like nail guns, hand held saws, miter saws, dust collection, etc.

I managed not to get sucked into the Packout system up until they released the wonderful drawers. Total game changer for me!

They are stupid expensive, but after using them I'd pay even more if I had to. For me it's all about not having to unstack or unpack lidded boxes to get at things below the top level. I can access stuff instantly weather it's in a vehicle, stacked on a dolly/hand truck, or stacked in my garage shop. It makes my 4runner a usable vehicle for much of the subcontracting I do lately. I can just select the drawer stacks I need, throw them in the SUV, and wheel them right into jobs. The contents are always instantly accessible, which is only true of the very top box in most lidded stacking arrangements. It can become very annoying having to dig things out of those stacks.

The drawers are much less water/dust resistant than many lidded stacking system boxes. However, for my purposes at least, they are on a entirely different level than lidded stacking systems as lower/middle units. They transition perfectly from shop, to vehicle, to job site without ever becoming frustrating as bottom-of-stack items. XL boxes and crates make wonderful top-of-stack components for larger items that won't fit into drawers.

I am now an unapologetic Packout fanboy convert.

That’s a really great point about this system. Are you using the hand truck or the rolling dolly? The hand truck seems to have some other interesting features that could be handy too.

I didn't watch the whole thing, but that video seems to be from before the drawers were released.

Spencer Lewis from Insider Carpentry, Rob Robalard from Concord Carpenter, and Finish Carpentry TV (all YouTube channels) have had the same experience. They all say they wasted tons of money on Packout systems that became immediately obsolete once the drawers were released. You can look up the channel name and "packout drawers" to get a few in-depth professional opinions.

Rob Robalard here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uT4bU99eliA

Most of the time I personally use the drawers as bases and just ratchet strap them to a folding hand truck that I have. Can put any large box or crate on top. Can throw a dolly on the bottom as makes sense or leave it behind as the case may be. The packout hand truck looks a little suspect to me, but I have no first hand experience. I load my drawers pretty heavy. Probably at maximum recommended weight cap. Other people have used the modular packout base to build their own dolly system ( See Spencer Lewis Insider Carpentry Youtube channel).

"Joe the tool guy" and "Tool Boss" YouTube channels are indispensable resources for people who buy a lot of Milwaukee, Makita, or Dewalt tools. Subscribe and use them like online fliers that notify and teach you how to take advantage of "hacks" and "glitches" at Home Depot or other stores. Hard to explain, but this often gets me tools at half price or less. I buy Milwaukee and Makita tools at lower than Ryobi Prices often. I will explain it later.

Example of a good deal that isn't a "hack" or "glitch", but a insider promo code on https://youtu.be/oyN_8ybIZqk .....discounted packout stack
Learn about 'Hacks" and "glitches", sorry I don't have time to explain now, have to get kid to school and get myself to work.

I'm going to try to explain "hack" and "glitch" for those unfamiliar with how it works.

Home Depot is currently selling one of my favorite framing saws on sale. Retail Price for the kit is something like $350. They have it on sale for $250, and you also get to select an additional tool for free. This is commonly called a "buy one get one" deal or "BOGO"

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Makita-18-Volt-X2-LXT-5-0Ah-Lithium-Ion-36-Volt-Brushless-Cordless-Rear-Handle-7-1-4-in-Circular-Saw-Kit-XSR01PT/301282463

80370

A "hackable" BOGO is when you add the items to the cart and they show up separately in the cart. Usually they will all lump together as a single $250 price. However, in this instance, notice how the price of the saw kit drops to $151.96, and the grinder is listed with it's own separate price. This means they have set it up as a "hack" for people who know what time it is.

80371

The way you take advantage of the "hack" is to place an order for the saw kit/grinder BOGO while setting the saw to ship to your house, and set the grinder for in store pickup. Wait until you have shipping notification on the saw kit, then cancel the in store pickup item. They will refund you the price of the grinder and you get the saw, two 5ah 18 volt batteries, a dual bay rapid charger, and a case for $151.96 plus tax. I don't think you can buy any cheap Ryobi brushed saw with 10 ah of batteries with charger and case for that price. The Makita is a serious contractor grade tool. Those batteries alone cost over $100 a piece if you were to buy them separately.

If you are hacking the main "buy one" item, you always want to choose the most expensive "get one free" item, as this will take the most money off the price of your main item. You can also use the hack to get a discounted "get one" item and return/cancel the main "buy one" item, if that makes any sense. There are a few different ways to do the "hack". You can return the item in person if you live close to the store. I just have them ship the items I want to keep to my house.

I think this is home depot's way of dumping product to resellers in order to get sales numbers they want without violating their contracts with companies like TTI, Stanley, and Makita. There are a bunch of people who make a living buying a reselling tools this way on ebay, amazon, and such. Home Depot isn't stupid, they know what they're doing. The YouTube channel "Tool Boss" has been posting these "hacks" for over 5 years.

A "glitch" is usually when someone screws up while listing a BOGO and mixes up which item is the "buy one" and which the "get one free". A couple months back I picked up a Makita "glitch" at Tractor Supply Co for a young guy at work who needed tools. I got him a brushless drill/driver combo with two 4ah batteries, rapid charger, case, and a recip saw for $125 out the door. Glitches don't come along every day, and when the do you have to buy them immediately before they sell out or are fixed.

The best way I've found to track these "hacks" and "glitches" is to subscribe to "Tool Boss" and "Joe the tool guy" YouTube channels, hit the bell notification thing, and remember to check the "community" tab as well on a daily basis. This has saved me thousands of dollars on Milwaukee and Makita tools.

Watch out though, because it's kind of like reloading where you don't always spend less money, but instead you simply wind up buying more tools (shooting more) for the same pile of money. At least if you're a tool whore like me that's what will happen.

We have a 2-man crew from SLC in town doing some electrical work. One of the guys is using the Rigid boxes and the other is using the Milwaukee Packout system. The guy with the Milwaukee system has been using it hard for over a year with no issues. He's drug it through snow, in and out of the work van, up stairs, etc. He absolutely loves it. Here is the rig I did for three gun. With the group I hang with you would be shunned for showing up with a purpose built gun cart. The basis of this is the cheapest hand truck Harbor Freight has (https://www.harborfreight.com/material-handling/hand-trucks-carts-dollies/600-lb-capacity-hand-truck-62775.html). The club I do this at is pretty large, and depending on where you park and what bay you shoot your last stage at, I am pretty sure you could end up dragging this a mile on a given day. Or at least it feels like a mile, uphill, both ways. Sometimes it actually IS snowing... So the bigger tires are a consideration. Another consideration is that it can be bulky. It fits in the hatchback car easily with the seat down, but my first version wouldn't fit under the tonneau cover in the truck (that is why the little bracket is not fully supporting the MTM box.

Anyway, if I had seen this before I built up mine the cheap hand truck might be an alternative to the Milwaukee bass system. Maybe attach one of the units to the hand truck and build from there.

As usual Vince rambles on (1.25x and 1.X are your friend with this guy) but there’s a lot of details about the hand truck here. The long tool storage on the back looks interesting from a 3-gun perspective if you could get an AR and shotgun in there.

Santa mistakenly had me on the "good list" this Christmas. Some of my very early impressions:

1. This is quality gear. As a "Dewalt guy", I'm very impressed.

2. The Packout is the AR-15 of rolling toolboxes. The modularity is incredible.

3. The new drawer systems will be great for quick and easy access. Those will be my next purchase.

Someone may have already posted about this, but Ryobi has their own version too, presumably at a lower cost.

I’m doing some in service training tomorrow. I’ll try to remember to get some pics of my three layer Packout system.

I just bought this. Worked out very well at it's first match.

Has anyone here done this? I'm starting off with the 8426 rolling tool box (https://www.amazon.com/48-22-8426-Packout-Rolling-Tool-Box/dp/B076QLC84N/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=milwaukee+8426+packout&qid=1628273727&sr=8-8) and looking to build up on it. I'm thinking 48-22-8422 boxes (https://www.amazon.com/Milwaukee-48-22-8422-PACKOUT-Compact-Tool/dp/B084DBGJQB/ref=sr_1_42?dchild=1&keywords=milwaukee+848-22-8422+packout&qid=1628273810&sr=8-42) dedicated to each caliber/platform maybe. Thoughts?

I use one at USPSA matches. Love the system, easy to roll around while at the range. This is better than some of the other types because the wheels are better.

This works much better than the Stanley unit I tried first. The larger wheels are better on gravel and the units are more water resistant, plus I have greater capacity. I can also repack the units as needed, last month I as at a class where I had to park a short walk from the bay. I used the bottom and top parts, leaving the drawers behind. I put my Igloo lunchbox on top and was able to get everything from the truck to the range in one trip.
It’s too much for a quick range trip with just a couple of guns but I have a different box for that.

thought this was cool. I wonder if some of these could be used for a "gun room" and hold guns along with the packouts for access.

I use Packout for everything I care about when traveling. Fantastic for guns.

Another alternative.

I like the ability to put smaller cases on the bottom of the lid and the side of the case, and the removable handle. They obviously need a drawer base, however.

kinda like the way these work. Can go ON the box or IN the box, and the retractable handle is cool.

I always liked having a tool tray in my shooting box, but the low handle left them prone to tip. with the retractable handle the center of gravity will drop when the tray is lifted, causing it to tip less.

My use case for packout boxes is for recovery gear, tools and beverages in my Yamaha Wolverine x4 SxS. The compact boxes fit like they were made from the factory to work in the back of the yamaha and between the rear seats. A company called unique offroad products designed steel brackets that bolt down and allow you to just click them in and out. The fact they are waterproof and quick detach makes post ride cleanup a breeze and modularity/stackability is awesome. Expensive but worth it.

I custom made a 10L jerry can holder for extra water with 3D printed packout cleats off eBay to stack on one box as well. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221113/7a2d5f8824bba212be98b9c265694c32.jpg

Here is mine:

If note, the tool bag is sold without dividers. I simply switched the dividers from an old Larue Tactical range bag that naturally dropped in. The Milwaukee bag locks into the top like any other accessory.

Before this Milwaukee system I’d spend 30 min to an hour organizing my stuff for the range. Now, it’s less than 5 min.

I’ll never forget gifting Tom Jones a nice Packout setup. It started an addiction, much like my own 🤣

I got the new M12 2955 Packout speaker! Sensei will turn green with envy when he sees it mounted in my SxS 🤣 It makes plowing even more fun (I do enjoy plowing).

A bit of a tangent, but the Tmat (https://www.tmat.com/products/tmat-wheel-cribs)bed floor system caught my eye. It is a modular that is molded from something that will slide on the floor of the bed and let you stabilize stuff wherever you want. Just picked up my new truck (6.5ft bed) and I plan to put a cap on it, but I have become less and less pleased when I need waddle under the cap to get tools or something in the front of the current truck (8ft bed), so this might be a reasonably priced addition. I thought about the drawers but that really limits the height under a cap, and I may want a slide-in camper someday.

Anyway, I mention it here because they just launched a set of wheel chocks (https://www.tmat.com/products/tmat-wheel-cribs) specifically for the Packout:
