An Indiana police officer was "ambushed" and fatally shot near a federal building Wednesday, hours after an officer in Chicago along with two federal agents were shot while working undercover, the FBI said.
Terre Haute Det. Greg Ferency, a 30-year veteran of the police force, was shot outside the FBI Indianapolis Resident Agency around 2:15 p.m., the agency said in a statement. The officer was on an assignment with an FBI task force on behalf of the Terre Haute Police Department at the time and had been a federal task force officer since 2010, officials said.
An FBI agent shot the suspected gunman, who remains at a local hospital, the FBI said.
The FBI said it entends its "deepest sympathy to TFO Ferency’s family, friends and fellow officers."
Authorities have not said what led to the shooting but were initially looking for a suspect believed to be driving a Ford F-150 truck with rear-end damage and was considered to be armed and dangerous, Fox affiliate WXIN-TV reported.
That unidentified suspect was later taken into custody and was undergoing surgery, the news outlet reported. Ferency was the third Terre Haute office to be killed in the line of duty in the past 10 years, Carter said.
"This is an example of someone that would die for a person who hates who they are," he said.
He declined to provide more details about the deadly shooting and authorities are still searching for a motive.
The shooting occurred hours after a Chicago police officer and agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) working undercover were shot around 5:50 a.m., authorities in Chicago said.
The three officers were riding in the same unmarked, undercover vehicle attempting to enter the freeway when they were fired upon from the street, Brown said. A person of interest was being interviewed in connection with the shooting, police said.
One ATF agent injured is a male, the other is a female. The police officer is a male. No other identifying information was immediately released. They were listed in stable condition.

That’s terrible. There have been multiple incidents at RA’s and FO’s around the country recently.

TC215,
while I realize this is an open forum, but can you provide further information? Are these targeted attacks or general violence that happens to occur by FO's and RA's? Stay safe in any event.

I saw a story earlier where the murderer's neighbor didn't want to be identified. Says a lot to me.
Greg Ferency walked out of the building and the document says Meehan shot him. FBI Special Agent Ryan Lindgren ran out, engaging Meehan in a gun battle.
During the gun battle, the document states Meehan was shot twice before getting into his truck and fleeing the building.
Law enforcement officials found Meehan at a Terre Haute hospital where he underwent surgery for his gunshot wounds. The court document states a firearm and three Molotov Cocktails were discovered in Meehan’s tuck along with additional ammunition.

Apparently, the shooter was a federal corrections officer for many years.

Damn. That sucks. Rest In Peace, Brother.
I spent a lot of time in Terre Haute growing up. My parents are from there. My grandparents are buried there. Spent hours and hours at the Honeycreek Square. I can still smell the distinct odor of the creosote from the railroad tie place.

And made a failed run for Mayor on a liberal and anti gun platform.
Shane Meehan, the accused gunman in the shooting of a #TerreHaute police officer, is a former employee of the federal prison in Terre Haute. He ran for mayor as an independent two years ago, finishing last in a four-way race with 1% of the vote,” reported journalist Eric Berman.
He ran on an anti gun violence platform.
A video story on Meehan’s candidacy for mayor said he had lived in Terre Haute his entire life. He retired from the Terre Haute federal penitentiary and was working for UPS in 2019.
Meehan said he wanted to show that a political outsider could win and said schools were one of the biggest challenges Terre Haute faced.
He said that gun violence in schools around the country was a key concern.
“I think a lot of it has to do with the kids and what happens at home and everything else going on around them. It causes a lot of pressure, and a lot of things are happening that shouldn’t be happening,” he said, suggesting that “talking to the kids” would be a solution.
Meehan also said he wanted to balance the budget. Meehan added, “Public safety is doing well right now.” He advocated for more diversity in Terre Haute.

The more “telling” part is the suspect initiating the attack by throwing a Molotov cocktail at the FBI RA building before anyone was outside.
https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdin/pr/federal-charges-filed-against-man-killing-terre-haute-police-officer
According to court documents, Shane Meehan, 44, drove his pickup truck to the gate of the FBI Resident Agency building. Meehan exited his truck and threw a Molotov Cocktail toward the building. Detective Ferency walked out of the building shortly after Meehan threw the incendiary device and was confronted by Meehan who was holding a firearm. Meehan raised the firearm and shot Detective Ferency. Detective Ferency was able to return fire to defend himself but later died.
Shortly thereafter, an FBI Special Agent ran out of the building and engaged Meehan in a gun battle. Despite being shot twice, Meehan got into his truck and fled the scene. Meehan was located at the Vigo County Regional Hospital where he was treated for his gunshot wounds. A firearm was recovered from Meehan’s pickup truck along with three Molotov Cocktails and additional ammunition.

Looks like a suspect in custody on the Chicago PD/ATF shooting as well. Suspect miss took the officer and agents as a rival gang members.

I feel like I've seen a rise in general anti-cop sentiment brought on by a top-down anti-cop attitude from the executive branch before and I feel like I'll see it again.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_shooting_of_Baton_Rouge_police_officersIt predates this administration. My 18 yo daughter had been "unfriended" by darn near everyone in her HS because her dad is an evil, unarmed minority killing cop. The fact that I've never used my firearm in the line of duty in CONUS makes no difference to the wokearistas. And this is in Indiana...

Doesn’t surprise me. Colleges produce the teachers and colleges, not exclusively but largely, teach foolishness.

Without getting too specific I will say he wasn't a very good CO He was medically retired for a reason. He spent a lot of time not working around inmates. Thats about all I will say here but trust me. He was an embarrassment then and has ten folded that now.
Detective Ferency taught a lot of classes during annual Training at the US Penitentiary Very good presence and knowledgeable Enjoyed the few times we were privileged to have interagency training with him. Sad sad day.

Indiana has 92 counties. I'd like to think the ones that aren't Marion, St Joseph, Lake, and Monroe would be different. I fear that is not correct.

I think a lot of us that are cops or on social media are learning who are true friends are and who are not. Tell your daughter to stand tall because she's one of the good ones.
