What a tragedy. Who goes into the wilderness without a knife? This is obviously a PFer who doesn't frequent the Edged Weapons subforum.

I believe they introduced a small population in the very southern portion of the south island and its doing fairly well. Unlike most other big game there, tags for them are required and on a draw system. I believe they are pretty difficult to draw.

I won’t be falling for wasting a chance on that draw.

I do believe your odds absolutely plummet when compared to drawing a roar block.

That sounded like a red deer roar, rather than an elk bugle. Lots of red deer in New Zealand.

I didn't have sound on when I watched it the first time. Sounds like the camera guy is roaring at them.
I'm betting you're right. The darker "mane" had me thinking elk.

I’m told that the odds plunge to near zero for non Kiwis.

There are lots of places to fall to one's death in NZ... I love it there, but there are some trails that are no-bullshit scary.

If you're having a hard time understanding Kiwi-ese, here's a video that may help:

This video is a good reminder (especially for anti hunters) that animals do not die in a warm bed, surrounded by loved ones.
Starvation, predation , injuries and infections get most of them.
A well placed 30-06 round seems preferable to me.

Wife and I did the Shotover Canyon when they were still doing bungy. Looks like it's all swing seat now. 134 meters.

Grunt to call (not a RM elk bugle) and then be shocked when horny elk comes running...
Hmmmm.
