View Full Version : Gun and ammo related scam websites
Maybe I'm not in the loop but I stumbled onto this today: https://www.springfield-hellcat.com/
It is a completely legitimate and in no way a scam website dedicated to the Springfield Hellcat.
https://i.imgur.com/ynlDALV.png
Looks legit at first. Hovering over the "store" menu item is where it gets interesting. The store entries are "9mm caliber", "magazines" and "accessories". Odd way to phrase it but ok.
https://i.imgur.com/zSVE8tN.png
Aaaaand there it is. "9mm caliber is made by the best engineers after several developments." The best engineers you say? Several developments? Those are the developments I like! You know what? I'm sold. Already. I need this.
Well unfortunately some of the Perfectly Legitimate Goods were sold out. But just my luck, some were in stock!
It's buy time. Let's see. I guess we fill out our Perfectly Legitimate Order Form....
https://i.imgur.com/Sh8t2Lv.png
They only take Zelle, no credit cards. But fortunately for me, I have Zelle! (Because everyone does. You bank gave it to you. No you don't get a say in it.)
https://i.imgur.com/sg8fX5F.png
Uh oh. "If your order consist of a firearm"... well shit. My order DO consist of a firearm. Now I need an FFL?
https://i.imgur.com/aGSYcqC.png
Oh, thank goodness. The FFL is optional. I was starting to worry I wouldn't be able to give this Perfectly Legitimate Business my money.
https://i.imgur.com/yVmYRVM.png
Pipe down, you. I'm sure it was just an clerical error. They'll definitely get things squared away before they ship the gun that very much exists.
https://i.imgur.com/u6J0OHa.png
BOOM. Ordered. Just need to get their Perfectly Legitimate Email in my inbox, Zelle them my money, wait for them to recognize the completely understandable mistake of leaving out the FFL, thank them for their low, low fixed shipping rate of $20 and bing bam boom. Springfield Hellcat here I come!
https://i.imgur.com/dMP47X8.png
Of course without javascript the store has some placeholders they forgot to take out. But these things happen.
Wasn't there someone here recently that was looking at a similar Kimber-dedicated store? I guess enough people are falling for this sort of thing that it's actually profitable.

The real disappointing thing is that if you used that support email even if you got a person they wouldn't know anything about the actual site contents. So letting boredom overtake you and asking things like "HELLO I DON'T HAVE THE ZELLE CAN YOU TAKE ITUNES GIFT CARDS" is going to go nowhere.

There was also a dan wesson scam site a short while ago if I remember correct. They had the DWX ready to ship.

I mean, the first sign is that they're selling the Springfield Hellcat. Why would you want that?

Gunshowmags is a pretty shady outfit. I order some mags for a Ruger Mini which they claimed were Ruger mags. I got something but they weren't Mini-14 mags. They don't even look like Ruger Mini-14 mags. I've tried to contact them but the line is dead. I think they may be in China because it took three weeks to get them and they look like something someone stamped out with a hammer. I going to throw them in the garbage if I don't hear anything from them in a few weeks.
Don't do business with these jokers.

We had a clever spammer register today, schilling this outfit and with a Texas area code. Guess what? SCAM. Folks, please be careful. The scammers have figured out much money can be had easily in guns and gear social media sales. Before I made Buy/Sale/Trade Site Supporter access only, we literally had very genuine looking scammers cold calling (PMing) our forum members.

You know what I think? I think you just don't want people to have that 27/7 support. They have bent the rules of time and space to provide customer support beyond what mere mortals are otherwise capable of.

That one is disturbingly plausible.
They're eventually going to get to the point where the only tell is "we don't take credit cards; use digital payments you can't easily get refunded".
edit: eventually I might get another google voice number and try out some of that customer service. I want to see how convincing they are with a human instead of just a website.

It's really getting bad out there. I bank with J.P.Morgan Chase, and they told me don't walk away, RUN AWAY from ANY website that doesn't take Visa, AMEX, or Mastercard. Any paying website that requires an app to work, either is, or else can be made fraudulent very easily. They told me they get complaints all but daily from their customers. And Zelle is one of the absolute WORST.

This one had my attention for a minute, claiming to have primers, powder, and bullets in stock that were hard to find elsewhere.
https://Coastalfirearmshop.com
But they don’t take credit cards (despite the logo on the website), and ask for Zelle, Venmo, PayPal friends and family and Bitcoin.
And their contact phone number is out of service.
In addition, the phone number is in Marathon, FL, they claim to ship from Columbia, MO, but their “ship from” address is a house in the sticks west of Jacksonville, FL.

Had a relative attempt to order a firearm from them today. He received an email stating that they attempted to charge his credit card three times, but were unsuccessful. The email further stated that he could pay with Bitcoin, Zelle and Apple Pay. He contacted his CC and said that no charges were attempted today. The grammar and syntax in the email sent to him was odd, too.

These scammers intrigue me. Saw a bunch of them over Covid. First it was sites selling guns for below market, then sites focusing on ammo or even reloading components that no one had in stock anywhere else for prices that were too good to be true.
Some common threads:
They have things in stock no one else does.
Their prices are too good to be true.
And their “about us” page is generic and banal - something like “we were founded by a group of experts who wanted to bring you the best prices on guns & ammo. We have been in business since 2010 fulfilling our customer’s needs…..”. That’s a dead giveaway.

Looks like a smaller web hosting company out of Atlanta? Traceroute dead ends there, too. Doesn't look like hops off the lower 48. The list of associated domains look like something a smaller hosting company would get; mostly smaller businesses in the same general vicinity (Houston) where the owners likely referred each other, or they had a local sales person. rivascoffee.com has a bunch of MX records that indicate they use google's paid email/workspace.
Getting to the point it's hard to tell the fakes from the legit smaller shops. Or at least the legit shops with paid marketing shills, maybe? Some days I think if someone just Bartmoss'd the net it'd probably be a win.

What tool are you using to search???
I'm a novice... sounds like you know how to do it better, so, would appreciate some additional education...
[ETA: Looks like you are searching the domain name but the spam did not come from the IP associated with that domain IP... I'm sure I'm missing an understanding of the disconnect]
What I get is....
https://www.whtop.com/tools.ip/117.219.52.219

What tool are you using to search???
The standard linux CLI tools.
The 117 address is the source for who tried to create a pf account (LL @ post #47)
The 162 address is where mintarmory.com is located.
I think these things are usually a case of a scam account being created to shill for a scam website. It looks like they may be a real business that probably paid for a 'marketing' service to 'advertise' for them. That marketing service then probably went around mass registering accounts on the gunternet and started posting about what a good deal they found on mintarmory and you should buy from them because they're awesome, etc etc.
Shill/spam as opposed to outright fraud. See, you have to appreciate the nuance when it comes to scammers on the internet. ;)

I think the store itself might be legit, but that's still a shit way to advertise here. PF has relatively cheap advertising fees.
