Week 37: iHack
results may be posted until 11:59pm EST on Monday 30-July-2012.

designed from the Hackathorn 3-Second Headshot Standards (http://pistol-training.com/drills/3-second-head-shot-standards)
Range: 5yd
Target: three 2" circles (.pdf target downloadable here (http://pistol-training.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/6x2in-circles.pdf))
Start position: varies (see below)
Rounds fired: 36

The iHack is an indoor range friendly version of the famous Hackathorn 3-Second Headshot Standards (http://pistol-training.com/drills/3-second-head-shot-standards). The targets are much closer together but also significantly smaller than the regular version of the drill.

PAR time is set to three seconds for each string. There are three strings of fire.

Fire one (and only one) shot at each target, going from left to right
Fire one (and only one) shot at each target, going from right to left.
Fire one (and only one) shot at each target, beginning with the middle target and then finishing with the two outside targets in any order.

Shots fired after the 3-second PAR time count as misses. In total, you will fire nine rounds (three shots in three seconds, times three strings of fire) for each run of the drill. A "passing" score is 7 out of 9.

There are three "levels" to the drill based on start position for each 3-shot string. From easiest to hardest, they are: ready position (pistol cannot be pointed at the target), open top holster with no concealment, and either concealed or retention holster. You can choose whichever ready position you wish. If the drill proves too hard or easy, switch to a different "level" as appropriate.

Shoot the drill a total of four times (36 shots).

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

starting position (ready position, open holster, retention holster, or concealed)
hits for each of the four runs
aggregate score

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

I hate this drill! I basically had a repeat of my last time: http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?2641-Week-14-iHack. The sight over bore issue using the RMR remains a bit problematic for me up close on small targets, but becomes moot beyond around 10 yds or so--thus I continue to HATE 2" circles at 5 yds...

G19 w/RMR07 carried AIWB in a Fricke Seraphim from under a Patagonia shirt.

String 1: 6/9 (slow)
String 2: 7/9 (low)
String 3: 8/9 (OK)
String 4: 7/9 (low)

Total = 30/36

This is a very challenging drill, and way harder than the Hackathorn headshot standards. Some one can check my math, but the surface area of a two inch dot is about 3.14 inches compared to about 15 inches for a 3x5, and bigger yet for the head box in the Hachathorn drill. Of course this is a long way of saying, I had to warm up before I was shooting sub 3 second runs from concealment, and then averaging only 7/9 or 8/9 accuracy. Initially, I felt like I was moving my eyes to the next dot, or blinking during the shot, which I solved by pressurizing my eyes (I wear contact lenses) as I shot, to stay on the dot through the break of the shot.

Next week: 1" squares at three feet. <insert maniacal evil laughter>

Correct.

The smaller target is definitely more difficult, but you have a much shorter arc to traverse from target to target.

Shot today with my test gun (SACS/WTS 9mm 1911) from Keeper holster underneath untucked polo.

1: 9
2: 8
3: 8
4: 8
Total: 33 / 36

After surprising myself with the first run, I managed to dial things down to my expectations for the others.

Runs #2 and #4 I dropped one shot each; Run #3 I ran out of time on one string so only fired eight rounds.

Sheeeeeesh, I picked a bad week to make it to the range. 2" dots at 5 yards on a timer is my undoing. I hope I'm never attacked by a swarm of racquetballs.
1. 4
2. 2
3. 3
4. 2
11/36.

Weirdly enough, no matter order I was shooting them, I always got the best hits ("best" being very relative in this case) on the far right circle.

25/36 A personal best, woohoo

Most of my dropped points were late shots. A slow press out is my weakness, I have to work on getting faster on the first shot. Once I can get over 30 regularly I will start doing it from the holster.

I have been working on my grip lately as referenced in this thread:
http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?4841-Another-Lightbulb-moment
That focus combined with lack of focus on the serrated thingy on the front of the gun caused some missed shots. My main challenge on this drill is watching the sights. I always had time left and should have used it.

On a side note I shot a clean 5.72 FAST with my Tritium straight eights in the moonlight. It was a visual experience for sure

Hk p30l from an JRC awib under a polo

String1- 7
String 2- 4
String 3- 7
String 4- 7

Score 25/36

I was using someones lead reloads and they were keyholing,(at five yards even) so it was really tough to score because they ripped the paper up, even so I really need work here.
