When I was a young man, I read a series of novels in the Predator universe that featured a human woman of Japanese-American descent who first hunts with, and then against the Predators. I remember at the time enjoying them as a fluff read.

Predator is probably the best case scenario for it.

Seems like the whole point of the original movie was a bunch of super jacked guys with miniguns and M16s realizing they weren't on the top of the foodchain anymore. Arnold wasn't exactly going to win any hand to hand fights and had to resort to being clever. A Vasquez or Ripley can pull a trigger, build an IED and rig a trap as well as anyone else. Which is basically the only way to not end up with their spine mounted on an alien spaceship trophy wall to begin with.

There's a path to victory here. TBD if they take it.

I would venture that the reason movies like Aliens, Rouge One, GITS:SAC, and others work with strong female characters is because they don't dwell on the fact that they have strong female characters. It's just an accepted fact, and the movie doesn't stop to throw in That Scene- the useless "but you're a gurl!" nonsense that was hokey back in the 40's.

True, there was Hudson's riff at Vasquez, but it seems organic to the nature of the group somehow, the usual hard riffing in a setting like that.

1. As others have noted, the original was not a paragon of filmmaking. It was a high rpm/low IQ action movie. Nothing more, nothing less.

2. I think that I will refrain from criticizing someone’s life’s work (both the female actor cast and the director) particularly in an artistic endeavor, before the movie actually gets released.

3. Moreover, as I have posted before, these “woke” casting and remake/reboot choices, imho, are not good faith efforts to right historic wrongs, nor do they necessarily represent the absolute best person for a part/role, they are calculated risks being taken by “the studios” to make money. The only color that really matters is green.

Should these more diverse casting choices and remakes fail to make money, they will go by the wayside and/or be relegated to cable networks that first started offering demographically focus programming (fox, the WB, etc in the early 90’s) and perhaps some streaming platforms.
