Xavier L. Cooper, 20, of Racine, was shot shortly before 11:30 p.m. July 4 on the road at 12th Street and Grand Avenue, according to police. Arsenio R. Akins, 23, also of Racine, was charged last week in Cooper’s death.

The fatal shot came from a revolver Akins reportedly was using to pistol-whip another man during a fight, investigators said. As Akins allegedly struck this man in the head with the gun, it discharged — striking Cooper, according to investigators.

Wait... so either he was pistol-whipping someone with a *cocked* revolver and the impact dropped the hammer, or he was doing it with his finger on the trigger and a heck of a squeeze...

I mean, I'm not saying that pistol-whipping is a *good* idea, but just because something's stupid doesn't mean there aren't even dumber ways to do it.

A suspicious person might speculate that his attorney is trying to get him manslaughter instead of homicide.

Always thought you were supposed to pistol whip somebody *AFTER* you ran out of ammo.

I think it was old-time Texas Ranger Lone Wolf Gonzaullas who advised pulling the trigger at the moment of impact while pistol-whipping someone, to increase the disorientation. Of course he also carried 1911's with the trigger guard cut away so it may have been inevitable in his case.
