I'm not sure if this is GD, Rifles and Carbines, or Ammunition so:

A “freak accident” on camera nearly killed a former Kentucky State Police trooper who now runs a viral YouTube page with 1.83 million subscribers.

Scott DeShields was shooting a fire hydrant — which was set up at the end of his gun range — with a Serbu RN-50, a .50-caliber rifle, when the gun exploded. Pieces punctured his throat and hit him in the eye, he said.

DeShields is the owner of the Kentucky Ballistics YouTube page, an account that posts videos about guns and ammunition. It’s nearing 2 million subscribers. His other social media pages also have large followings.

“I shouldn’t be standing here, I should be 6-foot under,” DeShields said while explaining the April explosion and subsequent injuries in a recent YouTube video.

File it in the "If you buy the cheapest .50 cal rifle on the market, then stuff it with sketchy SLAP ammo of unknown origin bad things will happen" section.

He had a vascular injury in a very bad and difficult to access place. I would love to know more details about his surgery. Looks like a full median sternotomy to get control.

He also has no clue calling it a jugular vein injury and then saying he had a stroke risk when they clamped it off. I suspect he had an arterial injury to the right carotid base. Very difficult to access.

Quoted for truth.

"Designed by a Youtuber that makes silly videos about slam-fire shotguns" isn't exactly a selling point for me.

I saw a Dumb Internet Argument about whether the rifle or the ammo was to blame, to which I would guess "yes."

Shooting that ammo was like having unprotected sex with a meth addict in a gas station bathroom with dirty needles all over the floor.

If you choose to go with the Dollar General version of a .50 cal rifle and shoot scetchy ammo out of it this shouldn't surprise you.

That rifle is a Pipebomb.

Just watched the entire video. 85000+ estimated PSI normal should be 55000 psi.
I feel for the guy but I sure am not wearing a t shirt that says put a thumb in it.

That rifle is a Pipebomb.

That was my impression as well.

No way I’m shooting that with a damn threaded connection 2 inches from my face.

Buddy showed me the video the other day. I share the same criticisms already voiced here, but I admire the way they handled the severe medical emergency and it's worth listening to the story.

I don't see what the big deal is. 99 percent of the people who shoot that pipe bomb survive -- and he survived, so . ..

(That is sarcasm -- and a comment on other threads. . . sorry).

I had never seen this rifle before. I'm unaware of any other professionally produced firearm (primitive craft-made firearms need not apply) that uses a threaded cap as a pressure bearing part....likely for a reason.

I think there's some pretty severe failings in how they handled the medical portion, actually, and sort of reinforces that these guys are a bunch of goobers....especially given that he didn't identify the main failure and doesn't appear to be making any effort to correct it.

Primarily a complete lack of medical equipment and the knowledge on how to use it. A neck wound is a junctional wound, and 100% amenable to packing. It's actually a text-book injury for using a hemostatic gauze like QuickClot Combat Gauze or Celox. His severe loss of blood could have been almost entirely eliminated. If we take his report as accurate (there were many severely inaccurate technical errors he made, which gives me pause), he is 1) lucky to be alive, 2) even luckier that he didn't suffer ancillary issues related to the exsanguination, and 3) outrageously lucky that he's recovering so well.

Agreed. I have packed a stab wound to the throat with Combat Gauze and can attest that, while seemingly no fun for the stabbed dude, it worked well. I carry my gear just about everywhere and teach Stop The Bleed classes.

If I’m on a range or teaching shooting a plethora of med gear is with me. They would have been wise to have been prepared in a similar fashion.

The majority of inline muzzleloaders use threaded breech plugs, albeit at much lower pressure. Properly engineered and heat treated threads should be able to hold up as well as bolt lugs. Whether this rifle is "professionally engineered or produced" is certainly open to question. Even without a shitty threaded pipe that doesn't usually explode, continuing on when ammo is "acting funny" is incredibly stupid.

But all's well as long as it ends with a viral video.

I would. Half-tempted to finance his further poor decisions just for the shirt.

The main difference between that rifle and a pipe bomb is the pipe bomb doesn't have pretensions of being a rifle.

It's easy to pile on somebody on the internet, and I am truly glad the guy didn't die. Even dumbasses have someone who love them. But one casualty of 2020 is my patience for other people. We're living in an age where you can 1) use the internet to avoid making stupid decisions or 2) use the Internet to broadcast your stupid decisions to millions of people.

So many people are choosing #2.

The upshot of all this is that this guy is going to get a bunch more likes and follows on YouTube than he did before. The video of how he almost died shooting a sketchy rifle and crap ammo is probably his number 1 lead generator right now, and largest source of advertising revenue.

It would seem that the ammo was to blame and not the gun. Not that this is totally conclusive, but to me (who knows very little about this stuff) it's pretty convincing.

Haven't watched the newest video yet. If I recall correctly, he purchased the .50cal SLAP rounds online. The idea of salted rounds immediately came to mind. No way I'd use rounds of unknown origin.

Even if it wasn’t bol beaned, shooting that ammo through that gun was the equivalent of having unprotected sex with a complete stranger in a dirty gas station bathroom with the floor covered in used needles.
