View Full Version : K frame grips?

As some of you've probably seen, I recently bought a barrel-less K frame from J&G and want to do an 03RN inspired build.
To finish this off I'll need some new grips. I'd like something small and fairly thin that won't add too much bulk to the overall finished project.
Choices include grips from Hogue, Eagle, Altamont and Badger. Currently leaning towards the Secret Service grips from Eagle or the Boot grips from Badger. Anyone using ether? How's the overall fit and finish?
Anyone else I should be looking at for concealment type revolver grips?
Thanks.

Grip fit is a very individual thing. For me, stock magnas with a BK grip adaptor work really well for K frame .38's:
https://bkgrips.com/
Leaves the small rounded profile for concealment if desired but helps a good bit with control. BK is quick to deliver unlike Tyler.

Indeed. I'm enquiring about the fit and finish of the product not necessarily the fit in the hand.

I ordered a set of Badger Grips with speed loader cut and no finger grooves. They say the grips should ship in 7-10 days.

Just as an FYI, Altamont grips sells their seconds and one off's on Gunbroker for surprisingly low prices.

I ordered the same for a GP100. Mine doesn't work with speedloaders though. Hope yours do better. I've reached out to Badger to see if we can figure out issue. Grips feel great though.

They also have a couple sets of the panel-style for sale.

This reminds me that I need to get a couple speed loaders. Or at least a couple speed strips.

I like the rubber Hogue Mono Grips. They're the most comfortable to shoot. All the wood grips I've tried rap my thumb knuckle.

I think that's the issue and that grip panel wasn't thin enough that area.

Something to remember about grip fit to frame on pre-CNC S&W products: there are variations in final actual shape of the grip frame, and wood or rubber or nylon are easier and cheaper to mod than steel, so sometimes you’ll get an aftermarket grip that doesn’t perfectly match your particular grip frame. That isn’t always because the grip maker didn’t do a good job, but it isn’t more likely because their example frames of that size don’t match yours.
I’ve found that some patience and a fine file or dowel wrapped in fine emery paper usually resolve the situation when the grip is proud, and returning and trying something else, or someone else’s product works when the steel is what is proud.
I have one K frame that has a slightly different witness pin location than all of the others. It can be very difficult to swap grips with that one. I picked a set of grips for it, and opened the witness pin hole a little bit so that I can remove them more easily when needed.

These look pretty good. I might take a shot at them as the bidding gets close to an end:

These might also work well with the aforementioned grip adapter. Only $21 presently. I also might throw a bid on:

And these might also work well with an adapter. I like the very old school look although my 10-7 isn't that old school:

Speaking of factory style panels these look like they'd work well if I had found an original 2" barrel and wanted to basically restore the revolver to "as issued" condition:

I've never much cared for altamonts.
Those top grips look like they come from a m19 carry comp. The finger groves dont fit me very well. Their panels are to thin for me as well.
It should be tolerable with .38s, maybe

The Eagle Secret Service looks fairly thin. But it is hard to tell just from a photo(s). Hopefully the Badgers without the finger grooves will work well for me. Sort of a snub/round butt version of the old Jordan grips.

I hadn’t heard of Badger before. I’m looking for a set of concealment grips for a 2” square butt Model 10. Thinking about trying the Badgers with no finger groove, exposed bottom strap, and a speed loader cut. Does anyone know how thick they are compared to the Uncle Mike’s boot grips?

I got a NIB set of Ahrends from EBay for well less than $100 a couple of months ago, after another time O3RN was singing their praises. Just like anything else EBay, set your price limit, and if it’s possible, sooner or later the item will come along home for a price you can stomach. Or you’ll realize you need to raise your upper limit a notch or two. ;)

I just might take you up on that. The ahrends would be real nice if I can find them for what I wanna pay for em, all I see is square butt right now.

Just let me know. I typically shoot during the week before work. Ive been going down a snowmobile trail off federal corner rd.
The VZs will be hard to beat from a utilitarian pov.

Finish is okay. I wanted matte/oil finish so scuffs or scrapes can be more easily repaired.
One thing I don't like is the amount of material behind the trigger guard. It keeps me from getting my pinky up onto the gun. Granted it is a boot grip and should be as short as possible. Anyway I might try to work them over a bit and file some of the extra wood away.

This is my recently-acquired 3" M10-7 with Spegel boot grips to give you an idea of how far you might want to go in relieving that wood behind the trigger guard. Note that these grips extend about 1/4" below the grip frame, so they look longer because they are longer.
