If you aren't fast enough, it doesn't matter how accurate you are...

I've heard this idea expressed quite a bit less than the idea behind DotW 408 (if you aren't accurate enough, it doesn't matter how fast you are), but it's also true. A big part of the challenge of practical shooting is the recognition that there is a time limit. And while it may or may not be a challenging time limit, it probably cannot be precisely discerned beforehand. We have to shoot accurately enough, at a relevant speed. If we aren't fast enough, it won't matter how accurate we are.

String 1: Start with loaded handgun at the ready, target at 3 yards. At the start signal, shoot 1 shot to the lower A/-0 zone (body, not head.) Record your time and hit. You must make the hit in less than 0.50 seconds.

String 2: Start with handgun loaded and holstered, hands at sides, target at 3 yards. At the start signal, draw and shoot 1 shot to the lower A/-0 zone (body, not head.) Record your time and hit. You must make the hit in less than 1.50 seconds.

You must make both hits under the time limits to Pass.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Target, gun, holster, concealment (if used)
Time and hit on String 1
Time and hit on String 2
Pass or Fail
Anything you noticed

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

Well, I'm not fast enough. :(

Target, gun, holster, concealment (if used) B8, Walther P99C, unknown IWB, square-bottomed shirt
Time and hit on String 1 .62, 9
Time and hit on String 2 1.73, 9 (barely)
Pass or Fail Fail
Anything you noticed Reacting to the beep has always been a weak spot with me. The above were my first two shots; I tried some more just to see if I got faster and ended up with pretty much the same time each try. I'm just old and slow. The 15 mph wind against my back didn't help with clearing the shirt out of the way.

Since this is a one shot drill, there is no recoil management issue to deal with to do well on this drill. Therefore, a LOT can be done in dry fire to train to meet the required time. No ammo needed. I'd suggest spending a week dry firing it with the timer and I am pretty sure that majority would have no problem making the time

String 1 - 0.70 = fail. Only on the way home did I realize that it should probably have been a compressed ready; I did low ready.

String 2 - 1.92 = fail. Just not sudden enough these days.

P-07 Prograde w/TLR8, AIWB under heavy sweater. 4 runs on each string. I shot string 1 with hammer back, and in DA to see what difference that made. Answer: not much. 0.02 to 0.05s

String 1
0.39 SA 0.44DA, 0.39 SA, 0.41 DA. All clean.

String 2
0.93, 0.93, 0.97, 0.94. All clean.

I wanted to confirm if decocking to DA after an engagement results in a slower shot from ready with finger indexed. Ever so slightly.

Good idea. Then you have to decide if the juice (that .05 second advantage) is worth the squeeze. I've been decocking when coming off target for so long I'm not sure it would be for me. This is definitely a YMMV thing.

Decock. Every reason to. 0.05s is not significant.

I decided to give this another couple of tries. First one was a fail, managed to squeak by on the second try.

Target, gun, holster, concealment (if used): IDPA practice, Beretta PX4 full-size, JMCK IWB3, unbuttoned jacket.
First try:
Time and hit on String 1: .56, -1
Time and hit on String 2: 1.49, -0
Pass or Fail: Fail. There was a good bit of self-talk after that first shot -1.
67176

Second try:
Time and hit on String 1: .49, -0
Time and hit on String 2: 1.47, -0
Pass or Fail: Pass
67177

I don't know if the difference between this try and the first is due to the different-sized guns or something else. The guns are equally accurate and have about the same sight radius.

What did you use for a ready position?

Low ready, finger indexed.

G19.5MOS + RMR
JMCK AIWB Holster
Quarter zip fleece jacket

Five repetitions. All shots under time. First shot from low ready and finger indexed on slide. Second shot from concealment.

One miss on shot one (first rep), and one miss on shot two (second rep). Three out of five runs = pass.

Not sure when I shot the LEM last, but it’s been a few months and I was curious how I would do. First shot from low ready with finger indexed. Second shot from concealment. Five reps, same as the G19.5 I just posted.

First two shots were over time. Shot one from rep four was .37, but off the paper low. Got on the trigger way too early to compensate the long trigger pull I suppose. All shots from the concealed draw were hits within time.

Obviously start position matters.
I did three runs of each string ramping up speed.
From concealment, cotton sweater vest on top of AIWB G43x. Fingers curled below garment edge.

0.78s, 0.75s, 0.69s all hits.

Then from low ready with red dot down at target's "feet", finger off trigger.
Three runs, ramping up speed.

0.37s, 0.33s, 0.29s all hits.
