View Full Version : Gas cans are about to get worse, hooray

I just threw a SureCan (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0761WHH8L/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=A1DXN92KCKEQV4&psc=1) into my cart at Amazon, because I already hate most gas cans.

https://www.kadn.com/content/news/New-Law-Requires-Portable-Gas-Containers-to-Add-Devices-to-Protect-Against-Explosions-573513261.html

A bill tucked into the large spending legislation President Donald Trump signed into law on Sunday will require that portable fuel containers, including plastic gas cans, include "flame mitigation devices" to help prevent explosions from igniting inside them.

The "Portable Fuel Container Safety Act of 2020'' establishes "performance standards to protect against portable fuel container explosions near open flames or other ignition sources" and directs the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to "promulgate a final rule to require flame mitigation devices in portable fuel containers" within the next two and a half years.

One type of flame mitigation device, called a "flame arrester," which is usually pieces of mesh or disks with holes meant to disrupt flame, is used in metal "safety" gas cans, fuel tanks, and some containers of other flammable liquids, such as some charcoal lighter fluid brands and even some liquor bottles. But until the new law there was no federal requirement for some portable fuel containers.

PER EXPORT REGULATIONS, I UNDERSTAND THAT DS TACTICAL CANNOT SHIP THIS ITEM OUTSIDE OF CANADA: Required
I accept that I am shipping this item to a Canadian address

I'm always searching to find a gas can I can live with. The only option I keep coming back to is those expensive metal cans with the spring loaded lid release. I understand the hazards of combustion from gas vapor, trained by the Navy to fight aircraft fires, but this is absurd.

Soon enough one won't be able to carry gasoline in any container without a permit from the fire marshal. Read this and sign here. That will be 10 bucks. Good for 30 days. ;)

Time to tap a spigot on to your old beater car, and just use it as a transfer tank when you need gas somewhere else.

I honestly believe this is their way of trying to keep us from using internal combustion lawn and recreational equipment. Doesn’t CA already have something like that- where you can’t buy gas powered lawnmowers or trimmers these days?

Not afraid to post on PF. ;) I've seen the elephant.

Stop looking for gas cans. What you need is a "fuel utility jug".

I like the justrite metal fuel cans much better the eagle brand. I dislike the eagles plastic funnel and much prefer the justrite flex metal spout. They will last for decades but have really gotten expensive. I splurged when I had my teenage sons start cutting the grass without supervision. It’s one thing if they don’t pay attention and cut their toes off; it’s another thing if they get burned when a gas can explodes. My police Dept responded to all fire and ems calls. It was educational
I have four just right cans now-
5 gallon for gas
2 gallon for gas
5 gallon for diesel
2 gallon for mixed 2 cycle fuel

I see those on a lot of snowmobile and dirt bike trailers. Do they work well as general purpose gas cans, e.g. filling the lawn mower, or are they more of a 'fill the 4 gallon MX tank in a hurry' thing?

I use mine as a general gas can. I like to have some on hand around hurricane season, and use it to store for a weekish at a time. Then I pour it in one of our vehicles and refill the jug.

I haven't used it for a mower, but you absolutely could. For that I'd probably get one of the smaller 3 gallon ones. I have white so I can quickly tell how much gas is in it. I forget the manufacturer of mine but it has 2 handles. It's not a speed thing. It's literally a jug with a thick plastic hose for a spout. Some make you buy the hose seperate. They're pricey but for me not fighting with a stupid can is worth it. Your local motorsports store probably has them if you want to look in person.

I use those too. Atwood’s has a cheaper one which appears to be a generic of the above one. I use a funnel, or else the spout they come with. Never fill a hot engine......Never use gas for a fire starter.

I have a dozen of the VP jugs. They're good quality and easy to use in a vehicle or riding lawn mower. I've never used one in a push mower, chainsaw or other small equipment, but I can't imagine they'd be any worse than any other 5 gallon can. The hose is flexible enough that it shouldn't be a problem.

I typically get them locally at Bu-cee's (chain of giant gas stations in TX). I've seen them occasionally at Cabela's and BPS. They come in several colors.

Amazon has a great price on 4 for like $115. (https://www.amazon.com/VP-Gallon-Square-Racing-Utility/dp/B00AVA2NPE/ref=sr_1_4?crid=3SPMA9DKWX4DJ&dchild=1&keywords=lc2+fuel+jug&qid=1609762454&sprefix=Lc2+%2Caps%2C171&sr=8-4) I am able to fit six gallons in them. I got two in my collection and will add more over time. I need to build a cart for them and will get some more. There is an upgraded nozzle with a stiff end and other accessory that bends the outlet tube and makes it easier to fill a gas tank.

I would not use them for small engines as I would spill shit everywhere.

I got some 2.5 gallon Wavian cans for mixed gas and small engines. Get the other nozzle and it is pretty good.

However, for a man of your means and location, you should really quit fucking around with five gallons of gas at a time.
