It’s 09:00 on Radio Free America; this is Uncle Lost River, with Pictures, and the truth (almost at dawn, had to feed the minions) on the 1st of January 2021 Hindsight is now 2020!

Right now I’ve got a few words for some of our brothers and sisters in the occupied/Socialist zones. Please don't move to Idaho! I repeat, Please don't move to Idaho. Try Montana. The chair is against the wall. The chair is against the wall. John has a long mustache. John has a long mustache. Since 9mm is hard to find, not only for those behind enemy lines, but for those in Free States as well, it is time to dust off those old Warhorses Boys and Girls. It is another day closer the big game and another day closer to victory. And for all of you out there, on, or behind the lines, this is your Gun.

Just got back from the gym and had my normal off duty M&P40 2.0C in the fanny pack. When I put real clothes on the pistol will go into a JMCK IWB and there’s a 642 in Kramer pocket holster in the jeans pocket. It’s probably going to rain all day but I stopped by the office and picked up a little practice ammo thinking I could probably have the range to myself today.

One of my retirement plans is to rig a Suburban or an Expedition so I can sleep in the back and poke around the interesting parts of Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. I’ll probably still have one of my M&Ps on me but there will be a couple 357 and 44 revolvers along.

Damn, dude. Single loop tooled SS, Emerson Raven, 1911, and a hipster outside door motel tag from your daughter’s video shoot.

You are so old school, you make a one-room schoolhouse in rural Utah look like the office of diversity and inclusion at Portland State.

You should be next tier in line for vaccination, just based on that photo.

Honesty requires that I burst your bubble, at least concerning me. The case looks like that, but it doesn't contain an H&D. Story follows, Lex Luthier might wince while reading it.

I was in Bagram, Afghanistan from 5/03 - 2/04, having been transferred from scenic Tikrit. I was not quite a REMF, but close. There was a base chapel and the Catholic chaplain needed help with the choir, so I had my wife ship my Gibson MK35 to me. I had been playing at my local church for several years before my mobilization so I figured I'd be able to contribute. I played for a few months and while practicing, the guitar went tango uniform - the internal bracing apparently let go. I contacted Gibson and was told they didn't do repairs and gave me the info for the factory-approved guy in Baton Rouge. I shipped it to him and he repaired it to like-new, and it cost me more than I paid for the guitar when I bought it used.

But in the meantime, I needed something to play. I ordered (from Musician's Friend) a Takemine EG-240, a fairly cheap acoustic-electric and, since I needed a case anyway, I got one that looks like deputyG23's. I was lucky with that guitar, too, it sounds way better than it should for what I paid for it.

And H&D is 1.5 hours away from my front door.
We toured the shop in ‘08 just after I bought the guitar.
They polished it up, told me when it was made (2005), and put a strap button on the base of the neck for a reasonable price.
It is much more instrument than I deserve.
My son can flat pick a la Doc Watson and can play his version of Black Mountain Rag fairly well.
He sounds like a million bucks on the H&D.

This is how we roll in north Alabama during the great ammo and primer shortage of 2020-202x. STI Lawman (.45 ACP of course) finished in NP3 in a Milt Sparks HR-LTD (unfortunately no longer in production) holster, a spare Colt Checkmate magazine tube with Tripp Super 7 internals (the last witness hole in the eight-round tube shows no round) in a Matt del Fatti magazine carrier, and a Chris Reeve Sebenza with a tanto blade. Ammo is old school (down to the last case of my old stash) Federal 230-grain standard pressure "bonded" Hydra-Shok.

The magazine in the pistol is a CMC Power Mag. Careful observers will note that the magazine without the base pad should be the reload. Funny how that works, but I like the reload without the pad.

Here are a couple of pics of my oldest kiddo Ms Kimber.

That's awesome! Congratulations! How old is Ms Kimber and at what age did she begin competing?

rd62 Kimber was I believe 5 when she first started. She is 18 now.

The semi-short version is that I rode bucking horses for Boise State's college team. Years later a gal that had been on the team with me ended up being in the same community. She didn't have kids of her own, but is still a serious rider. She said she wanted to teach Kimber to ride and basically "adopted" her. She was and still is a tough coach. Started Kimber on a difficult to control pony so she would have to work hard and learn to be a better rider, when all the other kids had easy horses. It really paid off because before long she became a very proficient rider, able to handle more powerful horses in spite of her small size.

I would help her with the gun stuff.

In this pic I think she was 6 maybe. At that age the kids get off the horses to shoot the balloons. They still shoot the same full power .45 loads, but just under the safety and control of the adults. At that age, she couldn't hold the heavy gun up on target for literally 2 seconds, so we had a method we used, and I used to make her say it out loud to be safe. The short version was gun up, front sight, hammer back, finger on trigger, squeeze, finger off trigger, etc. There was some sloppy handling by some of the participants and I did not want her getting used to being casual with a handgun, so we did it that way.

https://i.imgur.com/fNiMbqD.jpg

I still help her a bit with the gun stuff when she needs it. In fact before the Utah match we were discussing how to shave 10ths and 100ths of seconds with economy of motion work. Over the course of a match, that really adds up. Just like in USPSA, matches can be won or lost by those margins.

I am sure I have posted this one before, but this is a pic from one shoot where she came in too hot and got pitched. I told her that these things will happen and you just suck it up, ice up, and get back on and ride. We switched saddles and put her on a less powerful horse and she ended up winning that day, in spite of her injury. We didnt tell her mom about that wreck until after we got home!

https://i.imgur.com/gPPPdMu.jpg

Her real success is due to having a tough coach who basically was a 2nd mom, and one that pushed her hard for years. I'm just like the hired help.

This was at the Golden Spike Arena in Ogden.

I thought that was pretty cool, as when I rode bucking horses, the Golden Spike was one of the rodeo arenas within our region. So to have the kid ride there 25 ish years later made me smile.

Reminded me a lot of of Chris Ledoux's song "Utah Tribute" and the lyrics:

And you brought your little children, and I've seen 'em all grow tall
Yeah I watched you grow, and I owe you more than you'll ever know
And all the wild and wooly cowboys, dancin' and yellin' for more

Does the young lady prefer a 45 Colt Single Action to have near her when not competing?

She was a little kid, age 11 when she received the pair of Ruger Vaquero Montados for Christmas:

https://i.imgur.com/VmGUrZ7.jpg

I allowed her to keep the .45s in her room.

By then she was totally proficient, having shot a great many rounds through the guns owned by her coach. There were other handguns available, but it only made sense, as it was a matter of unconscious competence, and she was mature enough. Not mature enough keep her room clean, but mature enough to keep guns in there. So on evenings when she might be home alone, we were at least comfortable that she could handle hammering some lead down the hallway in the event she needed to. We had discussed a couple of courses of action and she could decide to shelter in place or scoot to the neighbors, depending on the situation.

We figured if she can handle a galloping horse and two guns at the same time, then that's a pretty good indicator that she would probably be ok with one in her bedroom.

https://i.imgur.com/uwPriJt.jpg?1

Some later events caused me to have her carrying a Smith Shield at 17 y/o. She took to handling the semi autos very quickly. And some of our members here pitched in and donated the carry gear she uses today.

We tried a couple different locations:

https://i.imgur.com/JpZyRP6.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/51VaHRt.jpg

She settled on behind the hip mostly.

She likes the Glock 19 as well, but it is a bit big on her scrawny frame for carrying.

And under "Welcome to the conversations in our house" is this gem of a text.

You might be in the "Lost River" house if your teenager asks if you swiped her 9mm out of her room, and you admonish her for leaving her .45s in the kitchen.

She was a little kid, age 11 when she received the pair of Ruger Vaquero Montados for Christmas:

Some later events caused me to have her carrying a Smith Shield at 17 y/o. She took to handling the semi autos very quickly. And some of our members here pitched in and donated the carry gear she uses today.

We tried a couple different locations:

She settled on behind the hip mostly.

Hank Williams, Jr. needs to update his song to be more gender inclusive ;) I'm pretty sure your "country girl" will survive!

My wife and I now have a little bun in the oven that measured 6.5 weeks at yesterday's ultrasound. Should that little bun grow up to be a daughter, I hope like hell we're both the kind of parents that manage to raise a daughter like yours.

That is Super Cool news !!

Congratulations my Friend!

Daughters will make your hair go gray like nothing else. There is no doubt about it, but they can win you over with just a smile. :D

They also can hang with the boys when it comes to "cool factor"

Hell, I hope I can raise my son to be like LR's daughter. And congrats, JRB

Man, that is one outrageously ginormasly cool pic! Your vest buttons must have popped off years back. I'd say she can hang with boys, for sure. Good on you and her.

Good reason to pack a field pistol to the rodeo.

My thought process differs a bit. It may make for a great picture, but I see a total jackwagon, who needs his ass handed to him.

If I was the roughstock director I would want to take the pistol away from that guy and smack him over his head with it. WTF is he thinking?

Having spent a fair bit of time in the rodeo arena, I look at it quite differently. Bulls get loose all the time. They go over panels frequently. That's why there are pickup men in the arena (the two guys on horses with ropes that are present each time a rider bucks out). The pickup men are not only there to push the stock (animals) around, but to deal with safety issues. They are in a sense, lifeguards.

I have seen bulls/horses (especially wild mustangs) go over panels and get into pretty much every area possible, including escaping the rodeo grounds completely on rare occasions. 99% of the time the pickup men get control of the stock and get them put away where they need to be.

The last damned thing you want is some dude from the stands flinging bullets. There is absolutely NO safe backstop. I guarantee that guy is a city slicker who bought a hat and came to watch the rodeo. Nobody in their right mind would throw shots in that environment.

Funny picture, but that guy needs to be taken out back behind the chutes and given some wall to wall counseling by the pickup men..

Fair points all, and I certainly know when to defer to a subject matter expert and neither am I an advocate for discharging a firearm in that context. I am only viewing this through the humorous lense it was presented. It does give new meaning to "stand your ground" though!

Its a funny assed pic and see the humor in it just as GJM did. I just also see a total dipstick. Rodeos bring out retards like flies to honey.

For comparison, during the Sturgis motorcycle rally, you get a bunch of corporate execs and dentists with Softails and Road Glides who for a week think they are badass bikers giving hard looks to people at the gas stations, riding/acting like complete fools, bowing up on virtually anybody, and pretending they are something that they are not.

Rodeo brings out the same types. They dig out their cowboy boots and cheesy straw hats that they bought at the fair and pretend they are Casey Tibbs or Lane Frost. They get a belly full of beer then into fights at and after the rodeo, at the bars whatnot, and generally make complete fools of themselves.

The bright side of it all though is Buckle Bunnies! Girls in cutoff shorts and tank tops!

Buckle Bunnies were really the best reason to ride bucking horses in college. Even if you got bucked off, that # pinned on the back of your shirt just seemed to attract pretty girls like crazy. :)
