Mother of slain Florida teen shot during burial service

COCOA, Fla. (AP) — An unknown gunman fired into a crowd gathered at a Saturday afternoon burial service of a teenager who was fatally shot by a Florida sheriff's deputy earlier this month, officials said.

The deceased teen's mother was wounded by the bullet, Florida Today reported.

The shooting happened as guests gathered at Riverview Memorial Gardens to pay their respects to 18-year-old Sincere Pierce. Pierce and 16-year-old Angelo Crooms were killed Nov. 13 by a Brevard County Sheriff's deputy.

The shot rang out as the pastor had just finished his prayers and the teen's friends and loved ones were placing flowers on the casket, the newspaper reported. The loud popping sound was followed by stunned silence before Quasheda Pierce screamed that she'd been hit.

The newspaper reported that mourners were at first slow to react before realizing what had occurred. They began rushing to nearby cars and leaving the funeral quickly.

Friends and family members helped Quasheda Pierce into a minivan before ambulances arrived. Deputies carrying rifles arrived a short time later in response to multiple 911 calls.

The mother was taken to a hospital, but the severity of her injury was not immediately known.

The teens were killed when Deputy Jafet Santiago-Miranda fired multiple shots into their car when the teens didn't pull over. Sheriff Wayne Ivey had said the deputies thought the vehicle might have been stolen, but the teens' families and lawyer, Natalie Jackson, said they had permission to use the car and called it a case of mistaken identity.

Their deaths captured national interest, with well-known civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump working on behalf of the families in what he called a bid for justice.

Ivey has released dash cam footage from the Nov. 13 shooting that showed the teens pulling into a driveway after being followed by two sheriff's cars without lights. Crooms, who was driving, then backed out of the driveway and drove forward in the direction of a deputy, who, gun drawn, repeatedly shouted at the teen to stop the car.

Shootings at funerals are not exactly uncommon among certain culture/lifestyle choices. Easy way to know where "the other team" is assembling. Maybe this one was an accident, though, or wrong person got hit or maybe not. But it's not surprising.

I would be pretty surprised if the officers' quick response was simply a matter of multiple 911 calls. PDs with the manpower to do so usually have people staged near funerals because of the above.

What BBI said.

I can remember when I was in traffic and we were responsible for most of the funeral escorts command would make sure we had BOLO sheets on the most likely offenders so that we could watch our sixes a little better while waiting for the services to end.

"Word on the street" would be passed along from informants to those working said informants and then sent down to us prior to the service. We'd be highly visible out in front of the church watching what passed by. Gang retaliation is a thing.....even though the media calls it "gun violence" or other nonsense.

Really not surprising at all.

Regards.

Yup, USA Today 3 hours ago:
The initial investigation suggests the shot was an accidental discharge from a gun carried by a 16-year-old attending the service, according to WKMG News 6, citing the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. The sheriff's office said the bullet penetrated the 16-year-old's leg and then struck Quasheda Pierce, WKMG reported.

How unfortunate for that ute. But that'd be an ND, no?

Haven't been over to Cocoa for a whle; the "Space Coast" is not exactly my favorite part of Florida. I mean it's not like say cracktown near E. Sunrise Blvd in Ft Lauderdale. I would not even get off I-95 at that exit. It's like driving into Detroit.

We should make it illegal for people under the age of 18 to conceal carry.

Side bar: I've never understood this fascination with ND vs AD. "Negligent" and "Accidental" describe different aspects and most of these usually fit both.

Accidental: happening by chance, unintentionally, or unexpectedly.
Negligent: failing to take proper care in doing something.

Firing into your own leg and then into a bystander was most like unintentional, unexpected, and done while failing to take proper care. Unless it was a P320 and he sneezed real hard or something. *ducks*

When I investigated those sorts of things, I standardized on UD, or Unintended Discharge, just to eliminate the semantic argument and to let the facts of the case speak to if they were negligent or not.

Carry on.

What's the difference between a Grammar Nazi and a Syntax Nazi? Is it like SS vs. SD? Or SA?

Amusing.

*checks to confirm this thread is in GD*

Well, the SD *was* an arm of the SS, IIRC, so maybe a Syntax Nazi only points out errors in certain parts of speech, whereas a Grammar Nazi is free to roam around and criticize the whole shebang?

Especially with the news it was the result of a ND/AD/UD. That extra layer of WTF was right up their alley.

Does it really matter? It’s well known both groups are anti-Semantics...

Jeez really? That's kind of sad.

The Babylon Bee has started another service called “notthebee”. It deals with real news that sounds like satire. I guess we’re “there” as a culture. What is baffling to me is that a news station out of Maine is reporting the story. Maybe it’s a ploy to keep “Florida Man” in the news when, in fact, it could as easily be New Jersey Man, Pennsylvania Man, Michigan Man, Illinois Man or New York Man as most of the people who live down here are from elsewhere. To quote an unremembered character fro an episode of The X Files...
“All the nuts roll down to Florida.”

Because "mother shot at funeral" is going to get clicks no matter where it's reported and where it happened, and clicks = $. I'd be surprised if it's not reported abroad as well....and a quick Google shows it's reported abroad as well.
