Please read the rules (http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?1837-Drill-of-the-Week) before participating in this thread.

Week 33: 3x5 Cold
results may be posted until 11:59pm EDT on Monday 2-July-2012.

Range: varies
Target: 3x5 card
Start position: varies (concealed preferred)
Rounds fired: 2

We'll do something very simple this week. The first two shots you fire at the range should be to a 3x5 card, timed for score. That's it. Just do it once per day. The important part is that you shoot it cold, no warm up, no dry-fire, no sight pictures. Don't point the gun at the target or anything else to "get ready" for the drill. You score bonus points if you do it with your carry ammo without fiddling with your magazines first, either.

Distance is up to you. Start position is up to you, though shooting it from concealment is preferred as usual.

If you go to the range more than once this week, try this each time and record all your results.

Please report the following when replying to this thread:

Distance to target
Start position (concealed, retention, open top holster, or ready position)
Time
Number of hits

(if you normally use the FAST as your cold drill, the first two shots count... just make sure to write down the time for that part separate from your regular FAST score)

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

I had not shot in 3 weeks and did no dry fire in that time. Put up a 3x5 card, stepped back 7 yds and pulled out my normal G19 carry pistol w/RMR02 carried AIWB in a Fricke Seraphim from under a Patagonia shirt and fired 2 rounds of Fed 147 gr HST--2 hits in 2.82 sec, not exactly blazing fast... Then I ran the FAST drill three times and basically sucked...only the last one was clean, with a 6.20 sec--worst I have done in a long while. Next ran the three Defoor pistol tests: failed #1 missing on a 7 yd shot, but passed #2 and #3. Another reminder of why weekly practice and regular dry firing are important.

Shot this yesterday cold after not live firing in a week. Shattered my wrist last week so shot this SHO at 7m.

Walther PPQ in Zack holster AIWB concealed.

Time: 3.50 clean.

Shot this cold 2 handed at 7m in same setup at 1.79 2 weeks ago, want to get under 2.5 cold SHO by the time my hand heals in 6-8 weeks.

7 yards, P30 LEM in Kolbeson Texas Comfort AIWB, 115 gr Aguila ammo, last practice of any kind - 125 live rounds on 06/20/12.

2.00, 0.63 for a total time of 2.63, clean.

Few attempts later I produced my personal best first two rounds, 1.78, 0.45 for a total of 2.23. Doesn't count for this drill, but gives me a hope for sub-6 FAST one day.

Shot it cold today AIWB concealed with my PPQ SHO at 7m, hands at sides.

Time: 2.80 clean.

Pushed the speed today and was able to get both.

Concealed, 7 yards, AIWB, 2.32 clean. Then I tried 3:30 oclock OWB on a whim. 2.79 clean. I then ran through a coupla mags using each technique. I was consistently 4 tenths faster with AIWB albeit a little variation here and there.

I need to work on this.

Last live-fire practice was on the 20th. I have been dry-firing regularly, though.

7 yards.
USPSA Production gear, hands at sides.
1.69 first shot, 0.42 split. 2.11 overall.
2 hits.

I'm sure I can go much faster - my usual par time for this drill is 1.8 seconds.

I'll probably try this drill with my IDPA gear this weekend.

Distance to target was 7 yards
Duty pistol, Glock 19 in my duty holster Safariland 6360 with SureFire x300 attached.
Time 1.99 clean
Two hits with Ranger T

I then ran 3 fast drills (last run wax 5.50, personal best) and shot the dot drill.

Ran the 3x5 drill for a second time using all the same hardware and shot a 1.89 clean.

Fun drill and thanks Doc!

7 yards
M&P9 Pro, Blade Tech holster, open front concealment (IDPA setup).

I made it to the range twice this last week and ran this drill twice, once cold, and once at the end.

Day one cold: 3.45 Day two cold: 3.43
Day one warm: 3.03 Day two warm: 3.13

No misses on those 4 runs. I may be slow, but at least I am consistantly slow :p

Tried to adhere as closely as possible to the ‘cold’ spirit of this drill.

7 yard distance on all reps. All reps shot cold, no draw, just swapping out the magazine in the gun for a magazine loaded with old carry ammo that needed to be gotten rid of. That was the only manipulation of the gun before shooting, and I used my support hand to do it so I don’t think it did anything to help me.

Used my carry Gen3 G34, with Ameriglo Operator sights, concealed under a closed-front shirt in a Keepers Concealment Keeper. Ammo was Gold Dot 124gr + p.

6/26/2012:

Last practice ~6 hours prior.

1.30, .50 = 1.80 (-1) Very disappointed in myself on this one. Saw the sights on target, then yipped with my support hand during the trigger press, shoving the first shot high off the 3x5 into the forehead area.

6/27/2012:

Last practice ~18 hours prior.

1.28, .56 = 1.84 clean.

6/28/2012:

Last practice ~6 hours prior.

1.24, .49 = 1.73 clean.

I had hoped to shoot this again today, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.

I did nothing to warm up for these drills. I also wasn’t going to forego my regular practice regimen just to make this drill colder. Because I practice drawing and pressing the trigger at least a couple times a day, I get the benefit of never being all that cold, which I think is an important benefit of frequent practice.
