I’m struck by how impossible this particular corruption would be in the many states that don’t require a permit in the first place.

A California grand jury has indicted Apple’s head of global security on charges that he tried to bribe Santa Clara County officials to procure firearms (CCW) licenses, according to a news release. Santa Clara district attorney Jeff Rosen alleges that Thomas Moyer offered 200 iPads — worth about $70,000 — to Capt. James Jensen and Undersheriff Rick Sung in the Santa Clara County sheriff’s office, in exchange for four concealed firearms licenses for Apple employees.

Well, Kamala is going to be disappointed that they are using their privilege in such distasteful fashion...

...without even going through her to make the arrangement.

Just a permit? Lame. I'm sure if they shopped around they would have found a sheriff who would give them a badge.

Even if you can appreciate the pickle of needing / wanting a CCW in a may issue utopia, bribery is always a bad idea.

In the case of the CCW license withheld from Harpreet Chadha, Sung managed to extract from Chadha a promise of $6,000 worth of luxury box seat tickets to a San Jose Sharks hockey game at the SAP Center on Valentine’s Day 2019. Sheriff Laurie Smith’s family members and some of her biggest political supporters held a small celebration of her re-election as Sheriff in the suite.

The most sanctimonious bullshit was this classic:

DA Jeff Rosen said: “Undersheriff Sung and Captain Jensen treated CCW licenses as commodities and found willing buyers. Bribe seekers should be reported to the District Attorney’s Office, not rewarded with compliance.”

Exactly... You report a corrupt county official to another county official in the same jurisdiction?
Why would you think that would go wrong? It would like telling Enos that Boss Hogg was crooked.

Well, if they used small pistol primers instead of iPads, they would have gotten away with it, I reckon...

The more power the State gets, the more corruption you will find.

Not especially germane to Apple’s ipads for permits grift, but all these recent news threads have made me go completely Maple Syrup Actual on 2020. I just can’t wait to see what shit comes up next. Each day is a gift, if you’re an irony connoisseur.

As PFC's most cheerful nihilist, I'm happy to see my deficiencies afflicting others.

The drummer from one of my old bands used to be fond of saying (and in fact I heard him say something similar quite recently) that you can choose any ideology you like: capitalism, communism, fascism, whatever. But you can't choose nihilism...

Nihilism chooses you.

Welcome to the team.

Yeah, if I recall correctly I think that's how the Koch Bros detail (or at least some of them) was armed as well; creds through the Lake Arthur, New Mexico PD with the other 150 or so fake cops.

America today: A nation of pretentious pretenders pretending to believe in the pretension that they proffer or mandate for others while they pretentiously pretend they are following the marching orders so pretentiously legislated by their elected pretenders (while they think no one is looking).

Burn the lot of 'em.

Seriously? We were just here a couple of months ago with Facebook's security firm trying similar BS to secure CCW permits for VIP protection details.

There's a P-F thread about that instance of corruption.

On a related note, the San Jose Inside article (linked above) explains that the You Tube HQ shooting a couple of years ago prompted a surge in requests for armed security in Silicon Valley. Surprise, surprise.

About the "Seriously?"

These are part of, or at minimum, a spin off of, the same investigation into the Facebook security CCW permit corruption. In other words this is simply another portion of a continuing scheme of misconduct.

Unlike on TV, investigations like this aren't wrapped up on 60 minutes minus commercials. In the real world, investigations and legal process such as search warrants and indictments take months and years. It's not uncommon for the results of one set of search warrants into a suspect's communications to result in additional suspects and more rounds of search warrants. The results of which may take weeks or even months to analyze.

My SWAG is that during the Facebook security/CCW investigation, either the search warrant returns on the suspect's communications revealed others engaged in the same form of corruption or someone from the initial investigation flipped and provided more suspects.

Don't be surprised if there are more indictments involving some other tech people.
