My 2015 Ram 1500 Hemi 4x4 Laramie now has 101000 miles. The 5yr/100k drivetrain warranty has expired. Debating getting new truck or keep this Ram for a few more years. Currently - no issues with Ram. In past, the center video screen system that has Nav, Music, Camera, and multiple controls replaced under warranty and an exhaust valve spring was replaced under warranty - both of which would be $$ out of pocket. In general though - trouble free.

FCA sent me a post card offering MOPAR Vehicle Protection Extended Plan which is backed by FCA. Does anyone have any experience with this specific extended warranty - not vehicle extended warranties in general but this specific one.

Thanks

I'm generally pretty skeptical of non-factory warranties (even if they are blessed by the OEM). Read every letter of the coverage details before you sign.

Financially it's generally a good idea to hold on to your car for a while as repairs almost always are cheaper than total cost of a new vehicle but I am sure you already know that.

The MOPAR warranty is the factory one for Chrysler vehicles. I bought my Grand Cherokee in late 2013 and after having it for a bit and doing some research on Jeep forums, found a dealer that sells the lifetime warranty online when most would not. That allowed them to reach a much broader audience and therefore, lower the price quite a bit. I was a little skeptical but saw enough people saying they had done it that way that I gave it a shot.

I've been very pleased so far and would definitely recommend it. I've lived in three different states since buying it the warranty so it has been to at least four or five different dealers and they've all been pretty good with handling anything that the warranty covers. I'm glad I bought it especially since it really does last the lifetime of the vehicle (I think) and is transferable (under certain conditions if I remember correctly). Been a while since I reviewed it.

Mine was a little over $3k to buy though and that was when it was still within the 3yr/30k full warranty, I assume the price only goes up with age and mileage.

If it is a Chrysler warranty it is the way to go if you want a warranty.

If it is sold through dealers shop around to get the best price.

The cost of it is a big factor in whether it's worth it or not.
Usually older cars like that will start nickel and diming you to death and you have to be sure those things are covered under the warranty or factor that into the total equation.

A used motors 5 grand a transmission rebuild is 2 to 3 grand.

A differential is about a thousand to 1500.

You have to make sure the warranty covers electronics as those are very expensive in newer cars also.

Research the cost of repairs and that's how you evaluate if it's worth it. research the value of the vehicle now and what it's valuable be at the end of the warranty and do the math.

a fairly modern American vehicle with 100K on it still has some value left in it but if you take past 150 it's a very difficult vehicle to sell. Meaning with 50 more K on it it could be worth half to 1/3 of what it is now. So research your local markets

You can buy them from any dealership, regardless of where you have it serviced. https://chryslerwarrantydirect.com/ is usually cheaper then any dealer will quote you, so buy there or beat your dealer down with their pricing.

I have the lifetime version, which they no longer offer. As long as the value of the repair does not exceed the value of the truck, it's covered. If the value of the truck is less then the repair, they refund the warranty at that point. I've only used it once, for a random cylinder misfire and they replaced the coil pack with no issue.

Extended warranties are casino gambling, in that the odds heavily favor the house. If you "self insure" you're on the hook for repairs. If you buy a warrant you're paying for the actuary's estimate of repairs paid out, administration costs, profit (for the underwriter, administrator, and retailer), marketing, etc. etc. So I don't buy term warranties, but if you do want one, the factory backed one is the one to get.
