Melody Lauer and John Johnston of Citizens Defense Research and Ballistic Radio will be visiting us in the Valley of the Sun to finish this year out, with John Correia of Active Self Protection hosting.

This is their flagship training event, and there are still many seats available whether you want the whole kit and caboodle, or you just want to sit in for the lecture portion.

A fast-paced course designed around the thought, “What if my children are with me when I get into a shooting?” Contextual Handgun: The Armed Parent/Guardian discusses with students the hard/soft skills necessary to solve the commonly observed shooting problems associated with fighting with our children present. Are some of the most commonly held best practices for if we are attacked when we are alone actually going to put our loved ones at risk when they are present? Students will be shown WHY the context we find ourselves in as a parent can change our tactics. This skill-intensive two-day course covers application of practical handgun skills in a family environment. Topics include, but are not limited to; types of attacks, avoidance skills, handgun terminal ballistics and the importance of accuracy, one-handed access/shooting skills, shooting past/around no-shoots, clearing family members from lines of fire, best practices for dealing with a close-range assault while loading/unloading children from the vehicle, malfunction clearances and more with the end result being students better capable of delivering fast, accurate, fight-ending fire on demand.

LECTURE ONLY Contextual Handgun: The Armed Parent/Guardian Seminar ($100 - stand alone (NO SHOOTING OR GEAR REQUIRED)) is a four-hour lecture discussing the types of attacks parents and children are likely to face, situational awareness, gear, mindset, post-incident, legal issues and non-firearm solutions to common issues while out and about with your children while remaining vigilant and minimizing your appeal as a potential victim.

The Armed Parent/Guardian ($450 - includes all range fees) is a full 16-hour course that includes Block I (the Seminar) and Block II (Fundamental Concealed Pistol Skills). Day two adds another 8 hours, including a ballistic demonstration, combat anatomy lecture, as well as techniques in controlling individuals, under our care during a violent encounter, ranging in age from a baby in arms to non-combative adult. You will also learn the principles of hostage rescue with a handgun as it relates to your loved one, shooting on the move, and when/how it's appropriate to move people under your care out of the line of fire during potential violent encounters.

FYI, they're also doing "Tests & Standards" the Friday before. It's a one-day, intense technical shooting program that's tailored to the students present. I've taken it twice, and have signed up again this year. It's emphatically not a class for beginners, but if you want to push until the wheels fall off, it's a great time.

I've taken TAP/G as well a couple years back, and they do an outstanding job with the material. It's a great introduction to a lot of material like the psychology of Violent Criminal Actors (with a specific focus on crimes against children), they include some unique techniques for dealing with both small and larger dependents during a confrontation, and incorporate those techniques into timed/scored assessments. This is one of those classes that takes someone who may have a pure shooting background and opens new vistas outside the shooting world, or takes someone who recently got their CCW and raises them to the next level of proficiency while also making clear that the gun is not the be-all/end-all solution to problems. It's very grounded in context.

Looks like lack of interest killed TAP/G this time around, but they're expanding the Tests & Standards class into a new 2-day format in its place. I've already signed up. I love the one-day class, and I'm really looking forward to the two-day format.
