View Full Version : AIWB HOLSTERS FOR REVOLVERS
So I have the pocket and ankle figured out. My sticking point is AIWB for revolvers No really good reviews out there that I can find.
Really not that many AIWB specific holster for revolvers. Im not talking about run to the grocery holsters. Im talking about all day holsters.
For me personally on autos Ive learned I need the wing and awl pad. Not sure how this is going to play out with the J but with the one holster I do have I think Im going to need the same.
I thought maybe there are a few people here who carry the wheelies and you perhaps could share what has or has not worked for you or holsters you are aware of.
Of course something that stays in place and provides all day wearability.
Maybe home made mods that made a holster work for you that previously wouldn't have.
Ive got a zulubravokydex.com holster ordered. A few others bookmarked. Ive got a feeling this is going to be an expensive search.

There’s a number of good options. For larger wheelies, it’s hard to beat JM custom kydex (JMCK). I’ve got a “George” (after the illustrious P-F’er) for a 4” K-frame that is excellent. For J frames, Dark Star Gear’s Apollo gets the nod. I’ve also had good luck with Legacy Arms (Also Apollo) minimalist with an LCR. JMCK and DSG are members here. Dale Fricke has fans as well—I’ve got a ton of his little kydex trigger guards to lug guns around in range bags an chest rigs.

I’ve put in some long days with kydex AIWB and wheelies with perfect comfort, but due to regular NPE gigging, I’m not the guy to ask about long-term chronic carry with these rigs. Good luck in your search, I’m sure other good options will be forthcoming.
I’ve got AIWB holsters for my 3” K’s from JMCK and Custom Carry Concepts. JMCK wins hands down.

I have a JMCK AIWB holster with a neoprene wedge for a 3" K. It also works OK for a 4" gun.
I also have a Kramer clip holster that works well. I prefer the JMCK when it's warm out.

I have a JMCK for 3" L Frame (686+) that worked great while I still owned the revolver.
Also, in leather, I found the Triple K #314 (https://www.americasgunstore.com/triple-k-314-inside-the-pants-holster/) worked well for me.
Also have Dark Star Gear and Harry's Holster for my S&W 642-1 J frame.
I have a DSG Kydex metal-clip holster for my LCR. I don't wear it AIWB but usually it clips to my gym shorts. I'd defer to orionz06 as to whether it's an "AIWB" holster or not, but I really like it.
I modded a Tagua-branded BladeTech Nano (clone or OEM?) with better quality PTD snap loops and a size able foam wedge. It works as a very comfortable option for a 3” Model 60 (couldn’t find any other options for the non-PC full lug model). It gets worn on hikes, fishing trips, hunts, and other sweaty outdoor activities where I see more benefit in carrying a stainless .357 mag than having 18 rounds of 9mm available.
After a lot of experimentation, I have found that round butt stocks (specifically, the old UM Spegel clones) really don’t “need” a wing/claw under a more fitted shirt. The weight isn’t in the grip area and the profile is very rounded, so the gun doesn’t flop about and clothing doesn’t really snag onto it.

JMCK for my GP100’s
DSG for my snubs.
I think its been about 2 years of wearing a jmcustom aiwb. Originally bought for a 4" m19 I cut an inch off of it when I got my 2.75" m66.
Most comfortable edc rig I own.

I like my smart carry..j frame carries great..deep concealment with it adj low and loose..or with it adjusted a little high, faster draw. As simple as hitching up the back of the attached belt to get a higher carry on demand and pop the grip out of the front waistband a little. Decide you want it back to deep concealed just pull out the waist a little and it drops back down. YMMV like everything else some will think its crap.. But me likey.

I went with the regular AIWB holster from JMCK, with a small muzzle pad.
I like this with J-frames: http://www.sideguardholsters.com/holsters/MinClip.htm. I'm also very fond of ClipGrip or Birami Hip-Grips in a Werner set-up.

Now-discontinued Eagle Industries for my N-Frames, SA sixguns, and GP100. (Soft-side nylon; one accommodates all.)
(Actually, an SA sixgun can be carried holster-less, with the loading gate flipped open, to act as a hanger. ;) )
JMCK for K-Frames and SP101.

I ordered and received a left-hand one, very quickly, too. The price was reasonable; for one thing, it's probably going to reside in the box o'holsters for the day that my strong-side hand/arm is out of commission for a time.

Guys and Gals, if you are opting for the jet fire/ Pliskin  style red dot equipped revolver set up, it will only work as a claw design with a red dot option. The wedge location of the normal AIWB/George styles won't work as the bottom of the wedge will be at the top of the belt.....basically no grip tucky tuck. Right now we don't have the revolvers up on the website in the Wing Claw 2.0 design (only claw design that will work with the red dots) but should within a week...ish. If you want to order now, use any pistol in the drop down and let me know in the comments it's for whatever barrel length K or L frame you have.

Those are VZ Grips, it's their round-to-square butt conversion model. I wanted to get a gun that had as much surface contact area as possible, and these grips accomplish that without sacrificing too much concealability.

Not much difference in the recoil department than my K19-3 2.5" shooting Buffalo bore 38 +P 158 LSWHP load. Have not performed any drills or other performance related experiments yet... searching for a holster now.

Options are a bit limited these days for AIWB.
Don Hume has/had a few that are potentially workable.
I rolled my own kydex for K Frame snubs. Not beautiful, but checks the boxes for me for positioning, retention and a slight body shield.

Still playing around with it, obviously. But in the time i had today, it wasn't as bad as it looks. I put some cant in to drop the butt down while still keeping the dot up, decided on the smaller claw to not push the dot out, added a muzzle wedge and it's still high but not printing as bad as expected.
The rogers grips are huge. With a set of boots or round butts, it'd work quite well, I'm certain. I'm going to keep experimenting and I'll update if i have any breakthroughs but I'm happy now.
As it is, this is just a range holster anyway so that i can play with my 617 from concealment. If i were to carry a wheel gun I'd use my gp100 in a jmck regular aiwb, which is my preference but the design won't work with dots unfortunately.

I’ve been using this C&G Covert holster for AIWB-ing my K6S 2” for a few months now with great results carried at 1:00. I wear a Wilderness Instructor belt with the Velcro end over the clip. The only adjustment I’ve made is hitting the bottom edge with 600 grit paper to smooth it up and make it absolutely comfy. Conceals perfect for me under an untucked t shirt. I think it would work well for the 3”.

Well, I purchased an ANR kydex holster I found for my Kimber K6S 3" revolver, and am less than thrilled. It only came with a tuckable strut. The strut feels pretty flimsy, and the setup leaves the revolver up high with more of it above my pants than I prefer. Plus they didn't give any options on belt width. It only comes with a PTD 1 3/4" loop, and I use only 1 1/2" belts.
I guess I will go digging through my (embarrassingly large and growing) box of holsters and see if I can cobble something together. The holster body itself fits the revolver just fine, although it feels more flimsy than what I'm used to. I've also got an email out to Lobo Leather thanks to the posts above.

Since diving (back) into the revolver world, I have started getting more AIWB holsters as well.
I started off with a Phlster city special several years ago now for a J frame. Then I bought a Taurus 856, and couldn’t find a AIWB holster, so I made one. And finally my latest purchase was a JM Custom AIWB for a 4” Smith & Wesson K frame. Unfortunately I haven’t got to use it very much because the Smith needed some work. It does work for my very first handgun that I purchased back in the 90’s, and Smith & Wesson 586 so that was a cool bonus.

I have had a good experience with appendix carrying a Smith and Wesson 2.6 inch 627 (N frame) in an Archangel Appendix Carry AIWB Holster. It is made of Kydex. It was $115 with shipping.
It keeps the gun secure, yet fast on the draw.
The rear portion of the holster (the part against my abdomen) is long enough (tall enough) to keep sweat off my gun. I do get sweat on the grips, but that is ok. Also, I am using largish Hogue grips on there and smaller grips may not get as sweaty. I have learned-if you appendix carry in the Summer-you and the holster and gun are gonna get sweaty. (I always wear a tucked t-shirt between the holstered gun and my body, then an untucked shirt over that).
It keeps the gun tight/flat against my abdomen and I can easily conceal with an untucked shirt.
It is a clip attachment that you fit over your belt to hold it in your pants, instead of snap belt loops, etc. I like clip holsters for ease of on and off.
One criticism: I paid a little extra to have a piece of foam doodad place on the lower inside (the side of the holster that is against the body) end of the holster and it started to come off within a week’s use. I resolved this by using some super glue and squeezing the foam pad to the holster overnight with a clamp. Has been fine since. The Foam piece is supposed to keep the grip of the gun closer to the body for better concealment and I believe it does help.
Other than that, I seems well made. I have used it daily for 3 months now (not that long, I know) but nothing has broken or failed on it with daily use.
Oh! I am not affiliated with the holster maker at all. Just passing may experience, cost, yadda yadda.
I have also had good luck with the Lobo Gunleather offset metal clip holster for a Ruger SP101 just like one in JTCarm’s prior post. Works good.

Wearing it whenever I go on a desert hike, which is about 3 days a week. The jcp (pillow) wasn’t mandatory but adds a little extra bit of comfort for me. It’s still not at the “can’t tell it’s there” comfort of the jm custom kydex aiwb2.5 for my 365xl, but I think that might be the weight of the pistol as much as anything. Conceal-ability is great
I like the belt clip better than expected, seems secure but really easy to take on and off.

The only leather one I have liked is the TT gun leather. I had it make for my old colt cobras (alloy with the 2 inch barrel). A few things I have noticed. I don't need a wedge or pillow for them to be comfortable, for the gun to stay in place, or for the gun not to want to roll out like a lot of other small barrel IWB holsters. The only downside is the belt loop. Though it works well, it does stick out a bit and makes it harder to wear with a t-shirt. Larger belt buckles help with that. I also have a JM kydex for my 3 inch GP-100, but I have the wing and a wedge for that one. It is extremely comfortable and works well, making it easy to hide the large gun.

Works good.

I was very tempted to try this holster for a S&W Mountain gun. Thanks for the info!

I really like the JMCK AIWB for my GP-100. I got it made for a 4 inch gun, but it works great with my 3 inch GP-100.

So I’m going to get an AIWB holster for my 3”S&W 64 after I pick it up.
Should I get one for a 3” or4”?
Wasn’t sure if the extra length is as good of an idea/necessary with a revolver as an autoloader, since it
doesn’t have the weight of a 15+ round mag of ammo on the top side of the belt line.

I have a 3 inch and a 4 inch GP100 so I went with the 4 inch. It works fine with both.

IMO, no. The extra length doesn't seem to do much of anything other than be an annoyance. Tony sells neoprene wedges sized for shorter holsters.
IIRC, 03RN sawed off the bottom inch of his holster when he went to a shorter barrel.

Yup. In terms of comfort the 3" is better and I don't think a 4" conceals noticably better.
I will say that I kinda want to order another 4" one for when I want to carry a 4" gun.:o
I've only got a couple of AIWB holsters for my .38 Special-sized S&W J-frames:

No extra pads or wings. It just works well for me.

No extra pads or wings. Personally, I'm not liking the belt "clip". I've been trying other clips and, so far, haven't found something "just right". I'll try a simple snap belt loop next. Maybe that'll be better, yet the supplied J-loop works ok.
My other revolver holsters are "owb" type.

Try a mono block. Either drill a hole in the center or just have it offset.
