View Full Version : Best Hot Climate USPSA Shirt?
Looking for options on shirts to wear for USPSA matches in hot climate.
I'm currently using a Nike Dri-Fit Cotton/Poly blend, which is plain except for the Nike Swoosh logo. I ordered some Gildan T-shirts, plain, which are a 50/50 mix. These are ok but not as comfy/stretchy as the Dri-Fit. I can order more Dri-Fit but relative to the Gildan, are much pricier. Plus I'd prefer not to have the logo because:reasons.
These are the Gildan's I bought:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07681MPCT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
These are the Nike Dri-Fits I have bought previously:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H4B6WK2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
My matches take place in FL, so it is hot and muggy. I also sweat a lot, so the shirt will get wet. I also prefer very bright colors, as bright as possible, i.e. orange or yellow. (Once I had an RSO ask me to make ready when I spotted a man still pasting down range wearing a black shirt.)

I usually wear Outdoor Research Astroman shirts. The old models are better if you can still find them (the snaps on the new models suck, IMO), but the fabric is great. Lightweight, quick drying, +50 UPF, has a collar (I always pop mine when out in the sun for that extra sun protection, and also gives you some protection against slings if you end up doing some long gun stuff). Can be had in both short sleeve and long sleeve; for USPSA, I prefer to use short sleeve and apply sunscreen on my arms, but I'll rock the long sleeves when hiking.

I have a few Orvis Drirelease shirts and really like them in the muggy Texas heat. The fabric has enough cotton in it to not feel “plastic-y”. It’s very thin, gives a cooling effect when soaked with sweat them dries out really fast. They’ve also been very durable over the years. Not the cheapest, but I’m planning to scoop up a couple more with hoods if that tells you anything.

Central Texas: I wear either my team jersey or shirts from underarmour. Half the time the underarmour shirt I wear is a long sleeve shirt due to the sun. Given the current political climate, my intent is just to wear plain underarmour shirts outside of any Tier 4s I go to (someone has to fill out the bottom ten roster!)

Amazon has these in neon orange. Not tight as I hate feeling like a sausage in the casing and the long sleeves protect against the sun as well as contact with hot brass: Clothe Co. Men's Long Sleeve Moisture Wicking Athletic Sport Training T-Shirt

I used Columbia moisture wicking long sleeve shirts. In TX, like Zinc, I wanted to minimize sun exposure for cancer and sunburn. Also long sleeves gave a bit of protection if an empty bounced on your arm.

Yeah, their "Omnifreeze" stuff seems to work pretty well. I mean, it's still going to be hot, but it at least helps some.

Materials that wick moisture are quite excellent. Don't forget headgear. In serious climates a baseball hat doesn't really cut it when better substitutes are available.

Gildan makes that same style as an all polyester "Performance" shirt which is somewhat more comfortable than poly-cotton blend.
Lots of colors, less than $6.

Long sleeve, too.

I have a Duluth Armachillo that cost more and does not feel as comfortable.
Thanks all.
Much appreciate the suggestions, especially farscott Jim Watson and Default.mp3. I'll look into those.
I should have mentioned usually shoot in the evenings locally, as otherwise it is so hot here in FL during the day that my equipment would melt, sure as the One Ring cast into the fire of Mount Doom, hence short sleeves.

For sun protection in hot weather, I've found a short-sleeved shirt and sun sleeves to be more comfortable than a long-sleeved shirt.
Thanks again all. Looking over the options I came upon this 100% polyester long sleeve by Hanes, so I am going to order a couple in p-f orange:

I have several of these in grey and blue that I have been using for PRS like rifle training in the heat to protect arms from concrete, etc. Cheap enough I do not care if they get damaged but pretty nice for sun protection too.

I use Mission and Marmot athletic shirts for some stuff but I tend to wear more hiking/fishing button downs these days. I like having a collar, the ability to undo buttons for venting, and and the non-stretch nylon fabric tends to snag less on briars, nails, staples, splinters, etc.
They also allow you to look less like a bum on the way to/from a range.

Please let us know how those do with odors. I have had some shirts that once I sweat, it was like the stuff was bonded to the shirt. It literally smelled fresh out of the dryer. My wife took it as a personal insult and washed by hand, in the machine with different detergents, and finally conceded defeat and tossed them. Not sure if I it was me but it was definitely not good.

Polyester is well-known to get really rank, but there are ways to combat it, as listed in the article linked.

I wear these all the time. Mostly short sleeve, but long sleeve for in the sun. I get them in graphite. Light enough in color to not collect the heat from the sun but dark enough to not show dirt. There's also the grey man effect. :) I find them ever so much cooler than a cotton T-shirt.
Unless you want your neck to end up cracked like a lizard, you want neck protection. My favorite hot weather USPSA upper garment is the Arcterx Remige (https://www.amazon.com/Arcteryx-Remige-Mens-Cryptochrome-Large/dp/B082DV3MRM/).

I have had some shirts that once I sweat, it was like the stuff was bonded to the shirt.Have you tried adding Borax to the wash? That along with not using fabric softener (skip both the liquid in the wash and sheets in the dryer), and using less detergent, worked to stop odors on my stuff. Too much detergent causes a build up which actually promotes odor. Fabric softener does the same. Borax helps kill off, and wash away, all the odor causing bacteria.

I am not sure all that my wife tried, but it was only those shirts. Never had an issue with any others. We do have Borax as well as Lysol concentrate (the old style stuff in the brown plastic bottle).

If the old school Lysol didn't work, that's some tough stuff.

Not really bright colors but Velocity Systems range and rugby shirts may be the most comfortable thing I’ve ever worn on my upper torso.

I agree, especially since the short sleeve version is available (at least direct from Velocity Systems) without the sleeve pockets which makes it even more low-profile.

I’m with George on this one. Shot a ten stage section match Sunday, then spent all day outside in New Mexico Tuesday. My pale Nordic skin would have been boiled lobster red without the hood and a baseball cap. I have a couple of knockoffs, but the Arcteryx are the best.

Gotcha, and I'll see how this green cotton/poly one works out in future matches. I may yet be able to sneak one of these orange L/S Hanes polyester shirts past the boss, but I'll probably have to disguise it as an order from Homegoods.

I almost always wear a hat cape for summer run n Gun events now. It's amazing how much cooler it keeps you.

Also headsweats brand caps can be had with a built in cape. This plus a collared shirt keeps your neck protected and allows tons of airflow.

Yes, MN section. Weather was so much better than last year, sunny and high 70s.
Stages were interesting, a mix of short and long, with more activating targets than last year.

So this shirt arrived today:
- Size fit is accurate to the size of the shirt
- Made in Haiti
- It's a 60/40 cotton/poly, and every bit as comfy as my Nike Dri-Fit
- No logo
- Color is very bright flourescent green
(the bright color I was specifically looking for, as my local matches take place in enclosed shooting bays which are under cover, and in the evening, so it's pretty dark. As I mentioned, I've been in a match where I got the load and make ready and saw a gentleman downrange pasting. So I really don't want to wear dark/black shirts when I'm resetting targets.)
- $7.53 including shipping, not bad
I'll put it through the wash to see if it's color fast and doesn't shrink. But I'm pretty pleased with it, and plan to order a few more of this same shirt for matches and competition if it works out.

I wish more summerweight/wicking shirts were made with high collars(like a mock turtle) for that reason, and for brass prevention. I’ve got a couple of quarter-zip shirts with high collars that get a lot of use in the summer. Skin cancer of both sides of the family may have something to do with it.....
I’ve found my Techwear jerseys very comfortable in both dry and wet heat...I think the reason so many people use them at matches is less because they make you look like a gamer douche and more because they actually work. Regular range days I use UA, EXO or other wicking shirts, the Velocity boss rugby referenced earlier is also very good but makes you look pretty operator...if you care. If you don’t actual combat shirts are awesome, short sleeve ones are great in the heat and slightly less tacticool looking.

Suffice it to say I had to give my wife a pair of sunglasses before she took a look at it. :) But for the price, it seems well made, stitching is ok, the banded cuffs are nice. It is a little weird, being in FL to have a long-sleeve shirt. I don't actually recall the last time I wore a long sleeve shirt. Maybe that job interview when I re-started work in 2018...but that might be about it.
Anyway, I like it, and will likely order another one (but maybe not in electro-flourescent limey/yellowy green lol.)

Mrs. RJ discovered this option at Costco today. $14.99 for two. Long sleeve, crew neck, UPF 40, 92% nylon, 8% spandex. I wear a size L these days, and they are a nice comfortable fit for me (package says L = 42-44).
