View Full Version : Pocket carry stocks for Ruger LCR

I'm considering purchasing an LCR in 38 special for pocket carry. It seems to be the lightest affordable option out there. Looking for recommendations for replacement stocks that would be more suitable for pocket carry. Ease of draw, weight and minimal printing for NPE's would be of primary concern. Recoil management would be secondary as I would be using wadcutters.
Thanks for any input you might have.

I run these:

https://shopruger.com/Hogue-LCR-Bantam_Boot-Grip/productinfo/19927/

Smaller profile than the stock tamer, hard sides, padded front and backstraps, holds up rather well. Just note that it will not work with exposed hammer models as the bacstrap sits high and can block hammer travel.

For me the Bantams are more ergonomic than the OEM grips --or maybe the better way to say it is less unergonomic.

Bantams and I modified mine to fit my hand and added some grip tape and stippling to get a better grip when firing off magnum rounds

That being said, I find the j frame trigger is 100% better in terms of reset while shooting under pressure so I do not carry the KLCR anymore.

I tried a set of bantam grips and was not happy with how they felt while shooting, so I put the OEM grips back on. I don't find the original grips a problem to pocket carry.

Hmmmm. I guess I’m going to have to try them; probably the only way to know for sure. You want to sell yours, Rich? :)

I would literally give them to you, but unfortunately I destroyed them trying to get them off. For whatever reason, they went on very very tight and short of some serious work with a Dremel, they refused to budge. Sorry. :(

I didn't like them either and went back to factory grips. If I can find them in my big box of unused holsters, stocks, grips, etc, I'll send them to you out of Karma.

Sorry, Totem Polar, can't find them. Must have donated them to the club when I got rid of a bunch of sack holsters I purchased 20 years ago when I didn't know any better.

I appreciate you both.

I ordered up a set. Maybe they’ll work, maybe they’ll be bad karma.

They’ll work with the x models if you sand/file away the area that blocks the hammer.

These are another possibility: https://www.eaglegrips.com/ruger-lcr-lcrx-grips/403-ruger-lcr-and-lcrx-rosewood-secret-service-grips-checkered.html

I have not used them, but have had them mentally bookmarked as the only suitable option for an LCR if/when I ever buy one. If Hogue or VZ started making LCR G-10 grips that would probably get me to buy the gun, but the biggest reason I haven't is a total lack of acceptable grip options.

I ran the Rogers grips on mine or the regular finger groove Hogues. I never had an issue drawing from the pocket with either one.

Neat trick I learned here on P-F; with a little patience, one can take a dremel & emery cloth the OEM grips. I prefer these to everything else I've tried.

My LCR is in my pocket any time I am home. I've always run the grips it came with and have never had a problem.
After reading this thread however, I may take some sandpaper to a couple of spots and my try stippling the front strap.

Sorry to dig up an old post, but I'm interested in what you specifically did to these grips. Seems like Talon Pro texture, and you mentioned stippling. I want to do something similar. I tried DM'ing you but doesn't seem that I can, I just joined the forum, so maybe that's why.

I believe these are out now https://hamreforge.com/product/ruger-lcr-lcrx-2f-boot-grip/

And for real None, you can hook wherever you can imagine

I second the HamreForge grips. With or without the hook…they’re fantastic and very ergonomic for me, yet not tacky like the OEM/Hogue offerings. I also like the Eagle Secret Service grips, but I’d get those in the checkered format.

Hamre Forge are the best grips available for the LCR in my opinion.

A long while back I settled on the Hogue bantams with a strip of grip tape for my .22 & .32 LCRs, especially for pocket carry.

120966

Eagerly awaited the Hamre Forge grips and my initial take was they didn't suit my utterly Glocktarded right hand as well as the bantams, so I put the HFs on the .32, which rarely leaves the safe. (Heresy, I know, but gawd the .22 carries and shoots so easily.)

Then I tore my right bicep tendon and had to start carrying lefty. I've done work left handed both live and dry fire, but after a couple of days living totally lefty, I realized my left hand didn't find the bantams as intuitive at all, but damned if the Hamre Forge grips aren't just perfect!

Ryan Hamre was kind enough to let me buy a standard right side grip panel and a left side hook panel, which will be living on one of my .22 LCRs forever more. Can't wait to re-experience them right handed, will be buying a set of whatever 2.0 looks like as soon as they're released.

Since the lefty HFs arrived, I've been carrying the LCR just behind my left hip almost exclusively. However, when wearing my sole pair of True-Spec cargo shorts, the rear of the cylinder release consistently catches the inside of the waistband and completely fouls my draw. So when I'm wearing those, it's back to pocket carry and the hook causes no problem at all.

Ive been pocket carrying LCRs (first a .38, now a .32) for over 10 years now as my edc. I always liked the stock grips and never had a problem with them. I was checking out another gun with slightly bigger grips and decided I liked having somewhere to put my pinky. I ended up getting these Pachmayr Diamond Pro grips and I really like them. They are not real expensive, feel great ergonomically and dont stick out of my pockets. I do look for pants with deeper pockets and never tuck my shirt in.121149

I have three LCRs - two are .327 Magnum and the other is .22 LR.

I've replaced the Hogue finger groove neoprene grips that Ruger installs at the factory because the finger grooves don't fit my fingers.

In fact, I've found that finger grooves on any grips I've tried on my LCRs just don't work for me. Finger grooves interfere with my ability to quickly acquire a good firing grip when drawing from pocket carry. I tried the plastic Rogers Enhanced LCR Grip and it, too, gave me problems with quickly acquiring a firing grip due to the finger grooves. It takes more effort to "set" my fingers in the grooves as I'm acquiring my grip in the pocket.

I tried the Hogue Bantam Boot Tamer grip. No go. Too short. I struggled to acquiring a good firing grip with it in my pocket.

The best grip that works for me is Hogue's full size "Black Rubber Tamer Cushion Grip without Finger Grooves". I wear Duluth Flex Firehose shorts and the front pockets are deep enough to conceal it with just a tiny bit of the grip butt peeking out. My hand just slides onto the grip almost perfectly, quickly, and with practically zero effort.

The second best grip for me is the Hamre Forge Hook Grip (without the hook grip). The contours of the grip sets the gun in my hand perfectly, however it's slower and requires more effort to acquire a good firing hand grip in the pocket. I use it when I want to be a little more discreet.

So... one of the .327 Magnum LCRs is fitted with the full size Hogue grip and the other is fitted with the Hamre Forge grip. The .22 LR LCR is fitted with the full size Hogue grip as well, but I also have a set of Hamre Fogre grips for it too, because it's an understudy training gun to my .327 LCRs.

I have shaped the factory grips more to my liking with low speed sanding dremel. Looks good, took some off the bottom, minimized the finger grooves, smaller but better grip than the factory bantams. I think I actually got that idea from one of you guys! I also have a walnut boot grip, but it is a pain in the ass to get off!

Learned it here, too. In my left hand grip search, I also ran across this nugget: wrap your modified OEM grips in hockey tape and they'll work even smoother in the pocket. Zero drawback in my 2 day experiment, fwiw.
