View Full Version : Blackhawk T Series Duty Holster

Let me start out by saying I like Safariland duty gear usually and never liked the SERPA! I've been rolling with a 6280 rotating hood back when a bunch of my coworkers were slugging it out with Don Hume thumb breaks. Now there's some quality leather gear... I think I made a better holster in leather shop class in junior high.
Anyway, my agency is switching from the HK P2000 to the Glock. Part of the rollout is a new holster which is a version of the Safariland ALS. I used an ALS with the HK and liked it well enough. The release nub works okay once you figure out you just sort of lay your thumb on it instead of trying to flick it down like some sort of momentary power switch.
With that said, the shape of the Glock grip in relation to the Safariland nub is different and I find myself having a hard time establishing my shooting grip and being able to release the nub. Practice makes perfect but it didn't seem to help much in this case. Rather than continue on with the Safariland I figured I'd give a Blackhawk T Series a try.

The T Series is similar in design to the aforementioned SERPA! but it uses a thumb latch instead of a trigger finger latch. In this particular holster's case, the thumb latch retracts a plastic finger inside the holster that extends out behind the light. When the internal finger is extended it blocks the light (and pistol) from being lifted up out of the holster. Pressing in on the thumb latch retracts the finger and releases the light so the gun can be drawn.
The thumb latch is a little lower than I like since I shoot with high thumbs. But the mechanics to release the thumb latch and draw the pistol are pretty intuitive so it shouldn't take too long to get comfortable with it.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200802/648fcc7bf0ae43c7c124f8cd9d483dcf.jpg
The rear of the slide is covered by a rotating hood that's spring-loaded and pops forward when the thumb latch is pressed. The hood has to be physically rotated back into place when reholstering but the pistol is retained by the finger when the gun is placed back in the holster.
A couple complaints at this point. I don't like the jacket slot belt loop. It is too low. I'll probably buy a mid-ride loop and use that instead. I also wonder about the open bottom of the holster. I like open bottom holsters that allow dirt and trash (candy wrappers, cigarette butts, to fall out. But the T takes this to an extreme and I can see the weapon light getting scratched or cracked due to the wide open design of this holster.
Who's using one of these? Any general issues or comments?

This past week I ran a T Series in a Court Officer Basic Pistol class I taught. I am always on the lookout for additional duty holsters since sometimes Safariland can be problematic to find in a timely manner. Our local LE rep at Vances had one and left it for us to T&E. While I don’t think it is as good as an ALS, so far I would describe it as useable, but not optimal.

Please forgive the thread drift. All my experience is with Safariland. Does anyone have comparison experience between the Blackhawk T holsters and Alien Gear Rapid Force Duty Holsters? Being that both holsters would be secondary choices to the Safariland ALS holsters, I am curious if anyone has time on both and can give compare/contrast data.

I have requested an Alien Gear to T&E. If it ever gets here I’ll post up a review.

I just went to a T-series holster for several reasons. Keep in mind that the observations I will detail are based off of dry fire and ONE week of duty use.
First, the reasons or things that I dont like about my safariland holster.
1. The excessive cant is retarded. I totally respect Bill Rogers and appreciate everything hes done but I grew up NEVER carrying behind the hip. I've been carrying appendix and strong side via competition holsters and OWB holsters since I decided to start carrying a gun. Cant on a duty holster for me is absolutely a no go and no manner of positioning the gun on the hip alleviates this or makes it more ergonomic for me.
2. The outward cant from the UBL is also horrid. I'm not a huge fat rolling sack of shit that needs an outboard cant in order to reach my gun. I find this to be totally unnecessary and a pain in the dick because the holster beats the shit out of my seat belt and in car printer assembly.
3. The UBL has SUCH a weird shape to it and within hours of putting my duty belt on, the bottom of the UBL juts right into the side of my hip and begins to cause considerable pain. This is further exacerbated by getting in and out of the car and having my seat belt and printer putting pressure on the holster, further digging it into my hip. Additionally, our computer setups in the car are the least ergonomic setups known to man. I have to twist myself and brace myself against the drivers side door with my left foot in order to type on the computer. Awesome...
4. The mid ride UBL Is too high for me. The low ride UBL is too low for me.
5. This is a big whatever but i'm just putting it out there. The suede lining on the safariland holsters holds moisture and i've gotten my gun stuck in there where it requires considerable force in order to draw it. Not cool. Additionally, ive found that safariland holsters beat the SHIT out of firearms. Not a huge concern since my gun is issued to me but i'm literally wearing a trench into the top of my slide to the point where i'm wondering if i'm going to wear through the melonite coating. My gun develops considerable rust (Florida).
6. I always think about the 7TS holster that i'm now issued cracking at some point. Its definitely a thing and I roll around enough with people where Its something I worry about.
All in all Safariland is an EXCELLENT producer of an EXCELLENT product.
On to the Blackhawk.
Likes:
1. The ride height is very goldilocks for me. Its perfect. This is entirely subjective though.
2. I immediately noticed that my hip pain was gone. IMMEDIATE tangible difference. I was elated.
3. Straight drop ride height is fantastic.
4. Release mechanism is intuitive as hell and requires very little retraining. I will say that right now when I draw its still conscious but its so intuitive that its easy. I drew my firearm to respond to an alarm call this past week and my first response was to thumb down the ALS. Thankfully, this was not a "hot" call and it made no difference but buyer beware. Get in a shit ton of dry reps prior to use.
5. The holster is REALLY slick. I dont know if this is a byproduct of how new it is but the interior kind of feels like you're inserting a pistol into jello. I mean this in a good way. There is very little space between the gun and the holster so the pistol feels very secure as it slides into its recess. There is still enough space for debris to pass by the gun so no worries there.
Things I dont like:
1. There's no X300 option. I had to switch to a TLR1 which is not the end of the world but ive never liked the mounting mechanism, especially on .40 cal Glocks.
2. Its new and I'm naturally distrustful of new shit. Typical cop. :)
3. The actual belt slide itself is kind of long. I have a 36 inch waist and I find that it doesnt really curve very much. Maybe it was made for a larger average? Still, even though it doesnt curve all that much, its still very comfy and it only takes up a tiny bit more space on the belt than a UBL.
4. This is a big one. Is this thing really a level 3 holster? That hood seems...awfully fragile and mostly useless as it springs out of the way when you hit a thumb switch. I find it hard to believe its a third retention mechanism since its connected to the secondary retention mechanism, ie the thumb release. At least on the Safariland, you have to move the bale out of the way in order to activate/deactivate the ALS.
5. This is an even bigger one. Given how intuitive it is for the user to extract their pistol, I have MAJOR concerns about the average cop using this when it comes to gun grab scenarios. It seems REALLY easy to defeat but this is purely theoretical as I have yet to test it in this capacity.
All in all i'm a fan but further use and testing will be required to determine if i will stick with it. As it stands right now, from a mere comfort standpoint, this thing has won me over.

The spring-loaded hood could sit a little closer to the end of the slide. As it is now it seems to serve more as rear sight protection rather than a retention device.

The thumb latch deal is somewhat protected by the design of the holster but it probably could be a little smaller or different shape to help with retention. At least the latch re-engages when the thumb latch is released.

Something else that may ultimately be a retention issue as well; the holster latches onto the light and not the pistol. This means that the pistol itself has little internal contact inside the holster and can be rocked back and forth quite a bit. I guess that doesn't really change how the holster operates but it does seem a little disappointing.

Does the holster protect access to the trigger, or can you pull it like on an ALS light bearing holster? Before the 7ts, it was very easy to reaching into the holster and pull the trigger of a gun with a light on it. I’ve heard the 7ts helps with this issue.

I second this. I will also take this one step further and say that I really like the relief cut under the trigger guard. Plenty of clearance so the holster will not rub you on the draw.
Tokarev, one more thing that I wanted to add. You mentioned the way in which the gun can move in the holster as being a possible detriment because it locks on the light. I forgot to add this to my list of likes and dislikes with the holsters.
On k9 tracks with my Safariland holsters, when I have to step up the pace and run or jog, my 22 bounces around inside of my holster like a damned set of cymbals. Its SO freaking loud that I feel like I sound like a charging herd of buffalo. The T series holster is silent in this regard and all you really hear are assorted janks and jingles from my duty belt that are relatively silent. I actually really dig the way the T series retains the pistol.
Does anyone have any experience with the leg strap attachment? It looks really well designed and its something id like to try.

No experience with the leg strap. Sorry.
The jacket slot belt loop is an inch or two too low for me. I just ordered the mid height loop off Amazon. I should have it tomorrow.
Does the belt loop/shank feel more durable than the old SERPA ones? I seem to recall multiple reports of holstered guns being ripped off duty belts during fights (real or ECQC I cannot remember) due to poor quality belt attachments.

The belt loop is pretty much the same as the one off the SERPA! as far as I can tell. But I haven't messed with a SERPA! in a few years and don't have one to compare with.
The two loops of the shank are attached to the shank body with two screws. One at the bottom of each arm of the loop. Then the shank itself is attached to the holster by three screws. In all cases, the screws are backed with steel nuts/inserts.

Here's the ride height mid ride loop. It sits probably a good 2 inches higher than the jacket slot.

If they make these for the M&P, you truly cannot access the trigger with a WML attached, and the attachment holds up better than those of the Serpa, I would consider the holster.
I like the ALS, but the attachment is not the most comfortable. I’ve lived with it for years, and I can continue to deal with it. Still, a quality holster that is more comfortable would be nice.

Our port is giving us SO much issue with weapon lights due to holsters... not going to be an option even if OFO allows them (don’t think they will).
I have an Omnivore laying around somewhere... either here or still in NJ. It wasn’t a slim setup, but Blackhawk did build it decently. If they changed up the Serpa to a thumb release... I’m sure it is squared away.

Brass doesn’t like change, and is arguing against weapon lights since there “technically” isn’t a specified holster for weapons lights. No way will they let different brands of holsters being used.
Office of Field Operations approved multiple weapon lights... but doubt they approved another holster brand than Safariland.
I have been using an Alien Gear duty holster for several months now. I just completed a second course with it as well. I'm running a G45 w/RMR and Streamlight HL.
The release and draw are very quick. Mine is a level III.
The pictured is the high ride height and during July 4th was walking/working a 15 hr shift and found out it hits right on my hip bone. Called Alien Gear and getting the mid-height bracket.
No issues so far.

I've been playing with my Blackhawk T all last week and a bit this current week. Been using it with my SIRT pistol.
One thing I've found that's made it faster, for me, is to sort of keep my shooting thumb locked or rigid during the initial grip and release. I've found that going into the draw with my thumb set at the right spot pops the hood forward and retracts the retention finger inside the holster and is faster than trying to deliberately press the thumb latch in as I'm gripping the pistol. Using the thumb to sort of mash the release fully and keep it depressed actually causes my hand to shift a little on the presentation.
Does that explanation make sense?

There's always room, you just have to really want it:

As much as I may want a DG switch, I don’t want plaintiff’s attorney saying that the only reason his client is dead is because I modified a holster and then when he grabbed it I screamed he’s going for (or got my) gun and my partner killed him.
The holster manufacturer will disavow. The department will disavow. This Situation has happened in 2020. We’ll see how it turns out.
If you aren’t offering an intuitive (pressure switch) option in your duty holsters, you are ok with people dying in the dark who didn’t have to die. If you (agencies/departments) prohibit pressure switches for non-NOD equipped patrol, then you’d rather justify those deaths based on “objective reasonableness based on the training of the officer and their knowledge at the time” than actually preventing the unnecessary death through proper training on a pressure switch. If you (holster makers) purport that pressure switches are bad, you are not only encouraging people to be shot who may not have had to be, but you are speaking from a position of ignorance to human performance under stress, and the reality of basic patrol level law enforcement.
Short answer... in a crude and frustrated tone...
Make a fucking holster that accepts a pressure switch.

The Blackhawk allows enough clearance to run the Streamlight switch. Hopefully that will be the case with the Surefire compatible version.
On a related note; I am surprised SIG (or Streamlight/Surefire) isn't making a P320 grip module with a light and pressure switch built directly in. The switch and its wiring could be run internally. The light itself could probably be made flatter and smaller and run off an internal battery that works off a cell phone charger. Or, even if the light ran on disposable batteries, it could likely be made smaller and blended into the frame to take up less overall space.

They did try the Lima module with an integrated laser, but no light if I remember correctly. Wouldn't be at all surprised if they were working on this. The key will be holster compatibility, which will mean working with those companies. Still astounds me that when I spoke to the Surefire and Streamlight folks at SHOT about holster compatibility for their new weaponlights, they basically said "Yeah....we're not really sure." The idea of developing products for which there is no partner support in the industry is staggering enough...but the Safariland booth was 25 yards away! For God's sake just walk over there and check!

The new 7390CBP (or whatever the Safariland product number is) that's coming for some of our Glocks is designed to fit multiple lights. Packaging lists the X300, TLR-1 and TLR-7 among a few others.
Interestingly the part numbers are different for the 19 and 47. I haven't delved into the Safariland desgn too much but it looks to use a barrel plug that stabilizes the pistol inside the holster so the ALS mechanism can lock the pistol in without relying on the shape/size of the light.

That’s interesting... I might have to look into that further. When I looked up Safariland holsters prior to our FI going to the brass, the full size lights (X300, TLR-1) had one set of numbers, and the compact lights (TLR-7, and the XCx... whichever version CBP approved; not a Surefire fan, so don’t remember) had another set.
If they do an ALS that takes both TLR-1 and TLR-7 lights... and better yet still holds the gun without a light... I’ll buy it the next day. That is a smart design.
Question on that Safariland holster you mentioned... any cut for red dots? I’m sure that won’t be approved for any of the larger parts of CBP (OFO or BP) for some time... but wishful thinking.

The APL is one of the lights listed as working with our new CBP Safariland holster.
Still, to keep things simple and hopefully avoid potential fitment issues, I am only buying TLR-1HL lights for my area. Some guys have complained, wanting an X300 instead. But they are free to buy their own light if they don't care for the one I'm buying with agency funds. Not trying to be a dick but I can get almost two Streamlights for the price of one Surefire. Plus we've been using the TLR series for a number of years and have had few problems. They are a good value.

I have two observations to report after continued use.
By day 3 in my shift, with the Safariland mid ride UBL, my right hip is beginning to develop a hot spot with soreness setting in. By day four, I cant wait to get the frickin duty belt off. Once my RDO's are over, its back in the saddle only to repeat that nightmare.
No such issues with the blackhawk belt drop.
Regarding the blackhawk belt drop. It doesn't feel as "sturdy" as the UBL. Either my belt is fatiguing (which could be) or there is a little bit more flex in the belt attachment. I cant quantify this as I have no means of testing the durometer/elastomer relating of the polymer or whatever the correct unit of measurement would be. Thus far, this has not inhibited my ability to draw from the holster but its something i'm paying attention to.
I have had the same issues with a hot spot after long shifts. I spoke with Alien Gear and they suggested a different attachment. Mine is the high ride model and I'm trying to decide between the mid or low to change the holster height and see if I can obtain come comfort.

I figured I'd swap the light over onto my Shadow Systems MR920 to check general holster fit with a Glock 19 sized handgun. Since the holster locks onto the light and not the pistol, Blackhawk! only makes it as a one size fits all. At least in the case of the 19/17. I assume a 17L or 34 would work (latch in properly) but one would extend out the bottom of the holster.

Missed you were looking for optic ready. Sorry.
Could someone with one of these in hand check to see if the belt shank is compatible with Safariland holster bodies? The tip of the UBL is causing me some serious hip pain and the Blackhawk one looks like it spaces away from the leg a little bit.

Hard to see but the holes don’t line up. You could make the top 2 holes work w a Dremel, but now way on the bottom hole.
Disappointing but thank you for checking. I have no idea why Safariland thought it was a good idea to angle the shank into the thigh.

I agree: I much prefer the older shanks, but was disappointed to find that they aren't compatible with Safariland holsters that take the newer shank -- the holes don't line up.
I was fortunate to inherit a "new old stock" 6280 that sat in my buddy's locker unused for about 20 years...so it replaced my ancient 6280, and continues to serve my needs.

I did some live fire range work with the holster last week. I'm starting to like it pretty well. Draw is quick and pretty intuitive. We've got almost 100 of these issued out now around my work area so we should know fairly quickly if there will be any unforeseen issues.
One thing that already seems to be an improvement over the ALS is durability. We had one shooter break his ALS when shooting from a fetal position. I've seen the old 6280 get squashed but this was the first time I've seen anyone break one of the new 7 series holsters.

Earlier this week I was fortunate enough to help teach a pistol instructor class to a batch of officers in Minnesota. The class was a mix of officers from around the Minneapolis area.
One of the departments sent four officers armed with Gen5 Glocks. Three of these officers (and one Sgt--not part of the class but visited the range a couple times) were using the T-Series holster and had been doing so for about six months. The department has been overall happy with the holster and they did not pass on any negative experiences. One officer had chosen not to take the issued Blackhawk! and had opted for an Alien Gear holster. I didn't talk to this officer at length but he did say the Alien Gear was working well for him.
In related news, one of the guys I work with recently attended a BAER Solutions class in AZ. Drew told him that he'd seen a number of the T-Series holsters and hasn't seen any problems with them.
So far the T seems to be a solid option...

Does that mean that the regular light bearing model will accept a pistol with an optic but doesn’t have a protective hood like the Safariland optic holsters?

Nope. The forward-facing side of the holster is too high and/or too close to the slide to accept a dot. Also the retention hood is not tall enough to clear a dot when down.

The two I have are optic compatible. My first came off a limited run of 2011 Staccato holsters. My second, for a Gen 5 G17 with a PMO, came from right from a blackhawk rep when I ran the Gunsite side of a Bushnell media event at the end of August - for Bushnell's release of their RXS100 and RXS250 pistol mounted optics.
For a Glock or any other thumb safety-less pistol, I would be fine with the T series. However, the lever is positioned well "below" the thumb safety's location. So, you established a low thumb grip, depress the paddle, begin to present the pistol, and then you'll need to adjust, re-establish your grip to deal with the thumb safety.

I have no experience with a T-Series for the 1911 but this is my thought as well. Releasing the paddle likely puts the thumb underneath the safety and will require a repositioning to deactivate.
Thumb repositioning is required with the Glock as well. As gripped and released, my thumb is above the mag release and is more or less level with the vertical groove in the Glock grip. I have to lift my thumb to make room for my support hand. In practice I haven't found this to be an impediment or distraction. But I'm only moving the thumb up rather than up and around as would be required with a 1911.

The retention for the duty holster version is the (at the time we looked at them earlier this year) Blade Tech system. I personally don’t like it because it’s so different in terms of learning curve from other systems. I would say it’s super slow, but I feel a bias based on my experience with the SLS and now the Blackhawk T-Series. It may be fast for some but I’m not there and I can’t see the regular cop used to the SLS getting there.
The quality of the holster is excellent and while big and blocky, the holster body has great retention and if they used a different active retention I’d be all over it.

Here's the Blackhawk! T-series L3D built to accept a red dot sight. So far this is only available for the Glock and SIG (surprisingly no M&P) although I assume other pistols are in the works.
As with the holster in my OP, this one is only compatible with the Streamlight. Again, I imagine other light models are in the works.
Overall, the holster is pretty much identical to the one in the OP. Same belt mount. Same little tab inside that pops out behind the light. Same thumb latch to release. Really the only thing different is the hood.
The hood sits in front of the veil and is locked in place by a small finger that catches when the veil is locked. The hood is not spring loaded and is "bumped" open by the optic during the draw. When the veil is closed after holstering it pushes the hood closed.
Internal space for the optic is huge. The RMR probably has an inch of clearance above the optic. I imagine the SRO, ACRO, Leupold DP will all work without issue.
One caveat regarding availability. BH appears to only sell the STI 2011 holster through Staccato. There may be other models that are specific to a particular pistol that are exclusive to that manufacturer. 62783https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201106/5c8dbe919bbc8c3bc11e96759b3a6ec8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201106/718df603b0f692a19a27834987e05a63.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201106/5cb34a6dd48d309d3d3e086a3099eab1.jpg

Got my level 2 model for the Glock in. My initial reaction is positive — like the release and way you can tilt the holster some muzzle forward.
Unfortunately, after a number of draws the release stopped working correctly. Either it fails to lock the holster in or release it as desired — takes some jiggling of the release to get it working. Anyone seen this?

I am a dumb ass — was using an X300 and this holster is designed for a TLR-1. Seems to work fine now with the proper light.
CS said they should have an X300 model out in a few months.
Yeah the light makes the difference. I have the Staccato P DUO and on can only use the Surefire and nothing else.
I have the level III and pleasantly surprised to be honest. I'm not a Blackhawk fan based on their passed products but this one they got right.

We've got quite a few of these in use now across Southern Arizona. Most are the L3D version for the Glock+TLR but we also have some for the pistol with no light.
So far people seem to like them although we have had one or two people that have turned them in and requested an exchange for the Safariland.
The only troubling report we've seen is regarding pebbles and the retention mechanism. It seems an agent slid down the side of a sandy ravine while making an arrest and found that some small-ish peddles got between the release paddles and the frame of the pistol. This was enough to obstruct the mechanism and effectively lock the pistol in the holster.
Is this a design defect with the holster? Would the same thing have happened with a different brand? I don't know.
In any case, I have sent this anecdote to Blackhawk's LE design branch so they are aware and can make some changes if warranted.

Germany’s Lower Saxony Police Department Converts to Blackhawk Holsters for Duty Use
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Blackhawk, a leader in law enforcement and military equipment for over 20 years, announced today its German distributor Helmut Hofmann has been awarded a contract from the Niedersachsen Police Department in Germany for new duty holsters from Blackhawk’s T-Series Holster line. The Niedersachsen Police Department, which includes the entire Lower Saxony state police, selected the Blackhawk T-Series L3D as its new service holster as part of the full agency conversion from a competitive brand.
The Niedersachsen Police, which is comprised of 8,000 sworn officers, becomes the second largest European contract for Blackhawk T-Series L3D holsters following the recent French Army win. The full-department conversion calls for the thumb operated Level 3 Duty (L3D) T-Series to accommodate the agency’s issued Heckler & Koch SFP9 service pistols as part of a multi-year framework agreement.
The Blackhawk L3D T-Series holster was selected by the Niedersachsen Police after an extensive testing and evaluation period, which included numerous holster models from various competitors. After thoroughly examining each submission, the department chose the Blackhawk holster based on its proprietary lightweight and robust materials plus its safe operating methods that are tailored to the requirements of the respective authorities, which significantly simplifies training.
JD Dulaney, Vice President and General Manager for Blackhawk, said, “We are honored that our T-Series holster has been selected by the Niedersachsen Police. This agency, along with multiple other European allies, have been strong advocates of our products and we are proud to support these men and women with a holster designed to meet the highest standards for performance and reliability.”
Developed with a low-friction internal material, the T-Series holster allows for a smooth and effortless draw, while its external design features a proprietary glass reinforced nylon for the utmost durability. This combination of features has been reported by adopting agencies to not only improve qualification scores by allowing for a smooth, fast draw, but to also promote safer handling of the sidearm.
Adding to its versatility, the T-Series L3D holster comes standard with the Jacket Slot Belt Loop and has three additional mounting options. Users can select either the S.T.R.I.K.E[emoji2400]/MOLLE Platform, or one of Blackhawk’s two different drop leg platforms, all of which can make use of the new patented pending Blackhawk second generation Quick Disconnect System. This unique and one-of-a-kind system allows the holster to be quickly and conveniently moved from one platform to another with no tools required.
Designed to follow Blackhawk’s Master Grip Principal, all T-Series holsters are specifically developed to allow the user’s hand to land naturally where it should in order to deploy the sidearm. This efficient movement pairs with the sound-dampening, low-friction, internal material that translates into a smooth, quiet draw.
For more information on the T-Series L3D holster from Blackhawk or to the view the complete line of T-Series holsters be sure to visit www.blackhawk.com.

Maybe old news to some but I saw this on the 10-8 website today:
https://www.10-8performance.com/blackhawk-t-series-qls-adapter/
This should not only allow the Blackhawk to work with the QLS systyem but also with the Safariland UBL mounts. Not that that, in and of itself, is probably a big deal but the various lengths of Safariland belt loops might give some customization over ride height. It should also allow the Blackhawk to be mounted to the True North MHA.
*note that True North has an Ominvore MHA adapter plate but he says his plate may not work with all versions of the T-Series. Also, Blackhawk is showing a new QD adapter for the T-Series on the website. It looks like it might be a little slimmer and trimmer than the QLS.

I'm generally not a fan of using aftermarket parts or mounting options with factory holsters. That said, for a teaching/training belt the 10-8 option looks pretty cool. One advantage of the QLS system is it allows different Safariland holster types, for different guns, to be run on the same belt. Saves the expense and trouble of multiple belts. The 10-8 piece allows you to do the same for a Blackhawk T Series, which I've become a fan of.

Don't know. It might be perfectly workable. But other interface products to combine holsters and mounting systems from different manufacturers have proven less than durable and reliable in on duty use in the past. This has led to lost guns in the holster during grab attempts, and Officer Involved Shootings as a result. Especially here in California, with the changes to the Penal Code re: Police use of Deadly Force, and how an officers "tactical conduct" and pre incident decision making can be used against us to decide criminal liability, I'd make damn sure that modification was approved in writing by your department.

Sound advice even with something as minor as this plate adapter.
With that said, I think there's little chance of something like this taking a legally justified use of force and turning it into a "bad shoot" especially when this doesn't change the mechanism of retention or require the user to drill new holes, etc.
And Lok Tite is your friend...

An officer with a southern California agency lost his holstered pistol to a suspect during a struggle. He was using a G Code Roti type adapter on his Safariland holster. It resulted in an OIS. I can tell you I would not want to be that cop having the same incident in my city in 2021, if written policy didn't authorize the modification. We're playing a whole different game out here.

Was the failure at the RTI wheel or at the adapter plate between the holster and mount?
Edit to add--I'm not trying to argue. I'm actually curious about what failed.

10-8 adapter received and installed. The adapter fits snugly on the three posts on the back of the holster. It actually almost snaps into place.
The adapter plus QLS system does give a bit of stand-off from the body. The adapter is in line with the holster but there is a little angle adjustment in the QLS fork.

All this flashlight stuff kind of makes me wonder why BH can't make a more universal holster. The non-light T-Series has the same internal little tab but it clips behind the trigger guard instead of behind the light. Would it not be possible to make a holster shell that accepts several lights by having the little nub catch on the trigger guard? It would seem easy enough. I'd guess they could make something that would work with the X300, TLR-1, Nightstick TWM, Modlite. Pretty much anything full-size.

Note that the two retention tabs are snapped off the bottom of the fork. The fork was broken when the agent fell. He landed on the bottom edge of the holster. The force of the impact drove the holster up hard enough to pop the tabs off.
This was a stock Safariland set-up. No adapter, etc.

LEO samples.
We got some preproduction prototype models of the L3D for a 320 w/X300U. They were different material, and not fully finished....but gave us an idea of the final product. Hoping the finished thing isn't "too tight".

One reason I approved only the QLS-L Kit 2. The locking mechanism hopefully provides a bit more security/strength. Of course.....cops can and will break anything eventually.

On the Safariland website it's listed as Kit 2. Includes the QLS19 fork and QLS22L plate. The plate has a little locking mechanism that prevents "inadvertent " release of the fork. Requires removing the gunbelt to release the lock and remove the holster. I dont know how much more support it gives, but anything is better than nothing. And for patrol use there is essentially no need to "quickly" remove your holster from the belt.

Thanks for the heads up. I took a propelled spill about a month ago that also had me landing on the bottom edge of my 7360 with QLS. Still using the rig, but I will check it more closely next shift. I suspect maybe less force than your agent, but it was still enough to mess up my hip/back a bit.

Got a pic you can post of the 22L plate? There's nothing on the Safariland site and I can't seem to find one on the web. I watched a couple QLS videos too but am not seeing anything for the L.

Yeah...the "new and improved" website again. Now it is only listed under the "Pick your Kit" tab. Kit 1 is the one standard fork and plate. Kit 2 is the QLS 19 Fork and the QLS 22L Plate. Used to have a description on the page of what that is. Appears to be the only way it's listed now.
I've had better luck getting my Safariland stuff from Copquest.com. It's where I've bought most of my Safariland accessories. Looks like they list it on the website if you go to the Holster Accessories page and search QLS 22L.

Copied from the US Duty Gear thread.
Here is the US Duty Gear Glock 17 holster made to accept WML and slide mounted optic. I have the Safariland QLS fork installed.
For some general comparisons of size, ride height and protection of optic, I am including pics of the Blackhawk! T-Series. The T is shown with the 10-8 adapter plate installed. The plate converts the T to the QLS system. It should also allow the Blackhawk! to work with the Safariland UBL directly if someone wants more versatility in ride height.
Safariland low belt loop used.

QLS forks on both holsters. Again, the 10-8 plate is used for the Blackhawk! No plate or any sort of adapter on the USDG holster.

Optic coverage. The Blackhawk! has a locking cover that locks into place via the rotating hood. The USDG is more open and does not provide a cover for debris, etc.

Stand-off from the belt. The Blackhawk! sticks out quite a bit especially with the 10-8 plate in between the holster and fork.

BTW--both holsters fit fine with the TLR-1 pressure switch attached.

They look almost identical. The MLS is for the military and designed to break away if trapped in a vehicle or something. The QLS is for LE and has a much higher breaking point so it’s less likely to be ripped off a belt.

Has anyone tried the Blackhawk T series LTC for a g17 with tlr7? I am looking at getting a concealableish owb and this looks promising. I like that it has the thumb retention.
Curious on how tight to the body it actually is and ride height. May end up just getting a Jmck owb2.

There's a difference between a "concealment" holster and what should be termed a "plainclothes" holster. Though the Blackhawk LTC is somewhat more low profile than the comparable Safariland ALS model, it's less "concealable" than a JMCK rig. You have to figure out what your priority really is.....concealment or retention.

That is why I had the ish attached to concealed. I’m not expecting it to hide. I want to know how far out and down from the belt it will be. I have used als holsters that are similar and this looks like it may have a smaller footprint.
I do not need maximum concealment. But I do not want a holster that sticks far out from my pants and will interfere with the seat belt.
I have only found a few pics of someone actually wearing the thing. Was hoping maybe some here had experience with it. Most likely a Jmck will be inbound regardless, that way I have both. The retention is nice because of my line of work and not having to worry about it.

Gotcha. It is definitely lower profile than an ALS, and rides a tad higher. Whether it is enough, not sure. Don't have any experience wearing it day to day, in and out of cars, etc. If you have both, you'll be covered.

Fast forward a bit. I'm still using the L3D T-Series daily and am generally happy with it. I do have the Blackhawk QD2 system coming and will post a little info once I have had a chance to play with it a bit.
On a related note I am also using a Blackhawk L3D RDS holster. It has been fine when used with an RMR or Holosun 508 but the flapper hood will not close on the ACRO or the Steiner MPS. Blackhawk says the only current solution is to remove the flapper hood. This works and allows the retention strap to function properly. Some will argue that the flapper hood is unnecessary especially when running a closed emitter but I think it is less than ideal. I'd prefer to retain the flapper as a level of protection against any sort of dirt, debris, etc. Just FYI for anyone who might be looking at the L3D for use with a dot.
One last update. I see the X300 / Glock version is finally shipping. I'm happy enough with the TLR-1 but it is good to see the holster available for other light options.

They've come out with several more gun/light combos recently, and I know a few more are in the works. Have you had any issues with the belt mount? Specifically the screw type clamp, over the Safariland solid one piece UBL? That was one concern one of our DT guys had with the holster when he tested it. Said one of the screws loosened over time with use.

Kind of an opposite problem actually. The Chicago screws on the belt loop are not slotted on both sides. We had one that was tightened to the point that it could not be loosened. It would just spin inside the plastic. And there isn't really a way to get pliers or anything on it. Blackhawk should spend the extra penny and gets screws that are slotted on both ends.

We just went to G17's and RMR's at work (yay).
I ran into a few issues with the transition and my gear selection.
We were issued Safariland RDS holsters, the 7 series equipment. I'm not a huge fan as i've been using the T series holsters for I believe the past two or three years. Time flies and I don't remember.
I have a TLR 1 RDS T series and 2X X300 RDS T Series rigs that i've been using on duty and in training for quite a while now. I believe i started using the X300 RDS T-series back in September but my timeline could be off.
Since I started using them i've used the Jacket Slot Belt adapter and it's been very comfy. One niggle that I had was the lack of a QD option. I really missed my QLS forks.
After the transition I went with a True North Concepts Modular holster adapter, QLS forks and the T series holsters with Hiltons (10-8 performance) adapter piece. Awesome setup except for one thing.
Due to the mounting points on the T-series holster, the holster with the QLS rides REALLY, REALLY high. The butt of the pistol is something like two or more inches OVER my belt line. With armor on, its really, really hard to draw.
I tried this product which lowered it about three quarters of an inch to an inch. I haven't actually measured anything.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08M4B8YSV?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
The Safariland product rides at a much, much lower height and puts the pistol where I want it and where I need it.
I'll get some pictures of the differences before I go back on duty tomorrow to really show everyone what i'm talking about.
As it stands, unless i go back to the jacket slot belt adapter, I don't have a way to achieve the ride height that I desire. I'd really like for BH to come out with some differing length belt adapters so we can adjust the vertical ride height.
Lastly, in the years of my use, I have had ZERO issues with the belt adapter coming loose. That thing is absolutely SOLID.
Here's one pic that I already took. From left to right, Safariland 7 Series, T series with DMT plate, T series with 10-8 QLS adapter.

Pardon my vitriol, its not directed at you.
The Safariland UBL is the biggest piece of shit ever designed by man as a belt hanger. I loathe it to the depths of hell and back. I am convinced that the designer is a Masochist and wants to punish humans with a shit design.
The UBL's dig into my IT band something fierce and basically cripple me. Every other belt hanger somehow manages to not do this to me. No clue why but its just the way the UBL's are designed to ride on the belt. They literally point the bottom or muzzle end of the holster directly into my leg.
The true north concepts hanger has the female QLS at its lowest point but the mounting points on the T series holster are really, really high once you add in the QLS male adapter. I asked Hilton if he had any plans to make a "dropped" version and he told me that I was the first person to request that. I DO have a low ride UBL on a battle belt that I run the 10-8 plate QLS equipped holsters on without any issue. The ride height is nice but as I stated above, the UBL is out for duty use, period.
Below is a pic of the ride height showing the Jacket Slot belt adapter and NO QD. I will have comparison pics up in the next few days. You can probably picture the ride height differences just by referencing the picture above showing the mounting points and how it alters the ride height accordingly.

I have to agree with the general assessment about "favorite." The material is thick and durable and the build quality seems consistent across the 100+ we have issued out across the agency. One or two guys have gone back to the 7390 but mostly out of a familiarity with the ALS rather than a dislike for the construction or quality. Or because they prefer the X300 or another light over the TLR-1.
I'd be surprised if the T-Series isn't soon released for the FN 509 now that LAPD is carrying that gun. Seems like a pretty good market decision right there.

I have to agree with the general assessment about "favorite." The material is thick and durable and the build quality seems consistent across the 100+ we have issued out across the agency. The primary firearms instructor for our SWAT team still loves his ALS only duty holster with the Nub mod. And it is a great setup. The 7TS holsters just aren't the same quality though....and SoSorryLand still refuses to make what we like.
I like the US Duty Gear stuff in terms of quality, but I prefer better retention. I even liked the Rapid Force Holster, which is very user-configurable. Still kinda complicated though.
Best in terms of features, durability, and pure speed of the draw is the BH T Series. Of course, the whole thing is moot now since the city contracting agency just torpedoed our plan to buy guns. Not for the cost....because "You don't just get to pick. We'll decide".
Oh well. They'll keep their 17 year old P226Rs in .40 and 6360 holsters. Because the city isn't gonna approve buying anything else.

The US Duty Gear "6280" is a decent product. Sort of feels like a hand made version of the Safariland classic. I think that's essentially what it is. Rotating hood is kind of dated but it is still fast. Down side is no retention if quickly reholstering or if the hood gets bumped down by body armor or another object.
I have an Alien Gear and kind of like the concept. I like the universal fit (not specific to any one light) and the smaller size over the T-Series. What I don't like is the release. To me, flicking the shooting thumb down so far to release doesn't lend itself to drawing with a good shooting grip. But maybe I just need to play around with it more.

I don't know what prompted Blackhawk! to make sure a big optics shroud. Here's a 508T in the holster with the hood removed. Note that the 508 has probably ¾" gap between the shroud and the top of the optic. If and when I ever mount a tourniquet to the holster I can probably dremel the shroud off and use the TQ pouch as a shield against bangs and bumps.

The SRO is not that much taller than the RMR. The closed emitter sights are larger than the SRO.
As promised, I managed to take another photo of the ride height i'm looking for. Pictured below is the Safariland 7 Series RDS holster with the True North Concepts Modular holster hanger. The QLS is on the lowest setting on the hanger and there's a slight reward cant on the both the female and male portions of the QLS. I dig this but I want my T-series back. As it stands right now, the only way to get here is to run a low mount UBL which I refuse to do. I have an inquiry in with BH and we will see if perhaps they're planning on releasing different length Jacket Slot Belt adapters or another hanger entirely.

Yes. They're extremely modular. I believe you can get this thing onto a 2 inch belt. Anything over that might be pushing it.
You can also bypass that issue by running the MHA on a techlok. That will allow you to mount this thing on basically anything.
Working with my T Series L3D RDS holster today doing some Blake's drills to just really push my trigger speed and transitions. I have been out of competition shooting for most of the pandemic, so I haven't been working some skill development as well as I could.
I am by no means fast.....I am old and broken. But I am sadly faster than most of my staff....just because they don't really understand what fast really is. One of my guys came out onto the range while I was shooting, and thought I was using my competition rig. As close to a 1 second draw as I come is about 1.05- 1.1 consistently, with my comp rig. I am literally just as fast with the T Series.....1.05s pretty consistently. It's one of my favorite features about the thing: a retention holster that can be as fast as a competition rig.

So much this.
If you don’t mind, to avoid the railing this thread I’m going to quote you it a new thread in the LE section regarding the insularity of LE firearms Instructors and programs.

My QD2 plates arrived today.
I installed one on a JSBL.
The thing is tight and one of the locking tabs doesn't want to really engage.
When the Delta plate (the male portion of the QD) is loose, the tabs on the female locking assembly move freely. Once you torque the screws on the delta plate down to 18 inch pounds, the locking tabs become very hard to engage. Anyone else having this issue?
The thing works and it seems to lock up tight but this is not quite as "smooth" as the QLS system from Safariland. Maybe it just needs a little bit of break in.
Also, I have no clue how i'm actually going to disengage the holster when its mounted on my body lol! I need to play with this more as I have yet to mount it to a belt.

The BH definitely needs a new hood. As reported, the current angled hood does not close with a Steiner or Aimpoint on the pistol. BH is currently recommending removal of the hood if running an enclosed emitter.
This does allow the top retention strap to rotate into place but it does also mean the rear optic window is pretty much wide open and exposed. It might not be so bad if the optic was recessed inside the holster a bit more.
The smudge is lost in the photo but the rear window has a pretty good grease smudge from getting touched by a sweaty forearm or hand.
With this said, I exchanged holsters/pistols with another shooter today and let him take a spin with the Shadow Systems/Steiner/Blackhawk combo. It is possible he touched the rear window while manipulating the gun. But I didn't notice the smudge when we re-exchanged equipment later. I believe I bumped the optic with my forearm sometime later.
A big deal? Not really. But it does leave the optic open partially to the elements. I think it is only matter of time before the window gets covered in additional grease, dust, debris. Maybe badly scratched during movement.

If you want to be able to run a pressure switch for a weaponlight, then the Blackhawk. Personally I'd run the Blackhawk even without that.....unless I was running an ALS only with the Nub mod.
We have tried the Gould and Goodrich holsters. They are super responsive to feedback, and made multiple changes we recommended. Still not ready for prime time in my opinion.
ETA: the Blackhawks speed is what sells it for me personally. With the T Series L3D, I'm faster than an ALS only weaponlight holster with a Nub mod. As I've said before, once you're accustomed to it, it's as fast as a competition rig.

Do you think the security is as good as the ALS?
I’m holding out hope that US Duty Gear gives us a quality level 3 holster.
Maybe I should, but I do not use a weapon mounted light. I did not like the gap/access to the trigger the light bearing holster allowed.

I think holster features (speed, security, etc.) are constantly competing values. While the Blackhawk might not be as "secure" as a Safariland 6360/7360 series, it is in my opinion easier to train and faster. The issue of the opening for the weaponlight giving access to the trigger is real on the 6360 series, but pretty well solved in the 7360.....which also seems to have caused a lot of the problems. It's a little too secure if you can't get the damn gun out NOW. But both the Blackhawk and the 7360 do deal with access to the trigger such that it's not a concern.

What about the Blade-Tech duty dropped and offset attachment? It looks to me to be sort of in between the mid ride and low UBL.

Just something for everyone to keep in mind, is that using any holster attachments other than OEM for a Safariland holster unequivocally voids their warranty. They are very, very clear about that. I know attachments like the True North hanger and the BlackBox Custom TQ adapter and Cant plate are super popular, but just know what you're getting into.
And having worked with institutional users who like to mod their department issued gear even when it's clearly against policy, I've found that even the gear geeks and gun aficionados tend to fuck things up when they start taking them apart. YMMV.

I'm always careful whenever I talk to squad mates about gear. Unless i'm physically helping them with their gear selection and installation I don't hold much confidence in their ability to properly torque, threadlock and install bits and bobs. I think you're right on the money there.
Without getting too off topic, can someone explain the potential liability a department might incur IF an end user modifies a holster from say a UBL to a true north hanger? The unofficial chastising line i've heard is that if the item is modified, the department cant go after the manufacturer. Any truth to this? Was Blackhawk ever sued because people were shooting themselves "due to the Serpa holsters design"? Has Safariland ever been sued because a UBL broke and a suspect was able to disarm an officer? Much like the Magnuson Moss act, there has to be proof that the problem was caused by the aftermarket accessory. That is pure speculation so if someone has a better understanding of the law, please educate me.
Policy violations aside, I really think that there is way too much fear mongering here.
I'm not a lawyer. I really don't understand the paralyzing fear of liability. I've also never been sued so that's one thing. :) Feel free to PM if this information should not be present on a public forum.

That's actually really cool. I have one one issue with it. The hanger doesn't seem to have a locking bar to allow downsizing on smaller belts like 1.75 inch units. I can't wear a leg strap so that thing would ride up every time I went to draw. I know they mention a sizing adjustment bar for 2 inch to 2.25 inch belts but that doesn't help those of us that are wearing slimmer belts.

Liability is a funny thing. It often doesn't mean what people think it means. I'm not a lawyer either, but you may face potential civil issues if you modify a piece of safety equipment in ways that the manufacturer specifically says voids their warranty and someone is injured as a result. In California, with some of the changes made to Use of Force law for LE, and how an officers pre-incident conduct can be used to determine the lawfullness of a use of force....coupled with some of the most anti LE activist DAs in the country....thats not a roll of the dice I find worth it. Again, you're specifically taking the liability OFF of the manufacturer, and putting it on yourself.

I ran Vickers extended stops on my guns for a little bit. They hung up ever so slightly but not really all that bad.
It was way worse on my Safariland holsters as the extended stop would smash into the ALS button. (OTD nub mod) so not exactly apples to apples.

I don't see anything on the website yet but Blackhawk does have some updates for the T-Series.
First is a new belt loop that has a slider height adjustment on it. This allows the holster to be set anywhere along the slider's travel without being confined to a series of different mounting holes. The new slider mechanism will work with the QD attachment, etc.
Second is a new hood that can be added to replace the current one. The new hood is more square in the back and will work with stuff like the ACRO.
Lastly is a new L3 release lever that requires two different motions to release the firearm. The first motion is a downward press that pops the hood forward. The second motion is an inward press that releases the tab that locks the gun. This was made at the request of agencies that don't like the current inward press releasing both the hood and the little tab. The hood will also be locked in the open position so that it can't get bumped into the closed position accidentally when the gun is out of the holster. This new release will be reverse compatible with current L3 holsters.

It is, frankly, terrible. The build quality feels fairly flimsy and the retention release is not well located. My biggest complaint is that the body of the holster extends up very close to the trigger guard and keeps me from obtaining a firing grip on the gun.
CT may have made changes to the design since and may have addressed these issues. Also this is not the newer L3 retention model.

Read all 17 pages of the thread and did a good amount of research and decided to get an L3D RDS for my G19 with RMR and X300V.
I got my holster directly from Blackhawk this month and noticed it's a little different than the other RDS versions I've seen.
It no longer has a cutout in the "hood" that protects the RDS. Seems Blackhawk has made some in-line changes to the RDS versions. I can't find a date code or anything on the holster.
Didn't see anything about that cut-out being gone here, so wanted to add that info to the thread.

Had anyone used both the dmt and 10-8 Blackhawk to safariland adapters? Does the dmt adapter get the holster any lower than the 10-8 version? I have the 10-8 right now going to a true north hanger, still a little higher than I want and still a little more interference from an external vest.

Yes.
Marginally lower. It's enough to notice but neither are as low as i'd like.
I would go with the recommended truth north adapter and hanger.

Keep us updated.
I found the jacket slot belt adapter to be absolutely awesome. I found it to be more comfortable than any other hanger on the market that I had run into. Unfortunately, with the existing adapters on the market, I ended up not liking the ride height with the Safariland QLS. For me, some kind of quick detach is a huge quality of life issue. It just makes things easier.
I ended up going back to the Blackhawk hanger and purchased their QD which seemed to work very well.
The true north product was fantastic but it wasn't quite as comfortable as the Blackhawk hanger due to the lack of curve. I run my holster at 1:30-2:00 on my hips. The straight drop would eventually dig into my thigh.

I just took the department 2 day rds class. I noticed the hanger was as getting annoying towards the end of the day. Will see how the other adapter works and go with that for awhile before going down the rabbit hole of trying by to get a safariland holster on a Blackhawk qd system ( I occasionally need a Glock 43x als holster on the nylon belt.)

I forgot to mention that I picked up the Qore performance ice vents pad for the True North hanger. It helped but wasn't perfect. Something to consider. If I can find the second one I purchased, ill send it to you. If i find it, ill let you know. No clue where it is in my pile of crap lol.

Hey thanks for the offer. If it gets that uncomfortable I’ll figure out another hanger. Got the true north adapter installed and it puts the holster where I want it.
I’m a little ambivalent towards it. The great adaptability just means there’s a lot of screws. I ended up using 2 of the Blackhawk screws to hold the adapter to the holster. 2 Safariland screws through the qls plate to the adapter using Chicago screw posts (I wish more would copy Tenicor and work in anti rotation if using something like this. ) then a third screw through the qls plate, the adapter, and in to the holster.
I have a feeling I’m going to play around with this for a bit more, but this will work for now. Hell maybe I’ll just get the Blackhawk holster for the 43x as well.

Wanted to add a data point.
The T-Series L3D RDS *does* indeed work with a Glock 34 and Trijicon SRO and X300 Turbo with *no* issues.
Just got this gun last week so I'm stoked to have a decent holster for it while running drills at the range.

Any word on the rumored changes to be compatible with enclosed optics? I'd really like to try one of these out with a Glock/Acro/x300.

Unfortunately I don't have any closed emitter optics, but I'm about 95% sure one will fit. Now if the optic cover will close over the ACRO, I'm not sure.
But that part pops right off. I had read in this thread that they are making a replacement optic cover that is slightly redesigned to close over an ACRO, etc. I believe it's around 15-20 posts up from this, back in either Jan or March.

This is accurate. Works with the ACRO & 509T. Just pop the cover off.
That revised cover is specifically what I’m asking about. I’d really prefer to have an optic cover intact if for no other reason than minimizing smudges on the rear lens. The Safariland 7xxx series promised a similar retrofit hood for enclosed emitters that turned out to be poorly executed and quite flappy, so I’m a little hesitant to jump without seeing the “soon” version.

Last email I saw from vistaoutdoors was they now have a 509T version, but no ACRO/MPS one yet.
“For now the Product # is M990766BKR(VBPD) or M990766BKL(VBPD). This will change to a 44N # at some point.”

Blackhawk issues statement about the safety of its light bearing holsters:
While Blackhawk appreciates handgun manufacturers cautioning holster users about light-bearing holster safety, we feel bound to point out that Blackhawk is unaware of any of these numerous uncommanded discharges with light-bearing holsters to have involved a Blackhawk T-Series holster. Our designs are weapon-light model specific and greatly minimize the gap found on the other generic weapon-light model design holsters.

Regarding the T-Series updates, have they incorporated the 2 stage release you mentioned earlier in this thread on newer holsters? And also the newer hood for enclosed emitters?
Semi-annual check-in on Acro compatibility- last year there was mention of it, and a rep I spoke with verbally said the new enclosed specific hood was supposed to be ready 2023/Q4. Unfortunately I lost the contact info for the rep when I change PDs and lost access to my email archive. Anybody have solid info on if the Acro dust cover is actually available?

Still 509T & open emitter designs only. 509T models all still show the VBPD notation on my end.
ACRO fits fine with no hood.

Incredibly frustrating given both Glock and S&W now have factory equipped Acro bundles and minimal (Glock) or no (S&W) Acro specific holster fits that protect the optic.

My agency has finally approved the ACRO for carry. A few guys are using the Blackhawk with the flapper removed. But then this leaves the back window and a part of the optic body exposed to accidentally being touched or bumped.
If nothing else I think Blackhawk should take a page from Safariland's play book and make an "RDSO" version. Delete the hood entirely and extend the optic portion of the holster up to cover the sides of most any optic. Heck just make this as a level two and delete the rotating hood if that makes it easier.
And then some email contacts. I believe these are still current if anyone needs them:

I have a Rapid Force for a Glock but don't care for it. My complaint is the amount of thumb movement needed to release the retention. If I had to guess I'd say the designer of the RF is a thumb down grip shooter.

Bumping to see how these are working in light of SouthNarc thread on holsters and fingers.
I have a hard time getting a finger into the trigger area on a Glock and T Series. It is a little easier on the right side of the holster but that's also the area protected by the wearer's body.

I posted in that thread, I went all in on the T-Series a year ago for personal use and have both TLR-7 and TLR-1 Glock variants. You cannot get a finger in there and the holster is too rigid to flex. I think it's the best duty holster out there right now. I'm disappointed that they still sell the Serpa.
Though I'm out of the game now, I still have a T Series L3D for a 320 w/optic and Streamlight TLR1 HL. None of the range staff back then could get our fingers in to activate the trigger, but I could definitely see a child's fingers, or small female hands, being able to do it. I'm going to ask my 18 year old racoon-pawed daughter to try when I get home.

I'm disappointed in that Blackhawk seems to have gone into hibernation regarding this holster.
No closed emitter option depending on the closed emitter. To run and ACRO or Steiner the hood needs to come off.
No fitment for some of the newer popular duty guns like the Walther PDP. And then no fitment for the Staccato with anything other than the X300.
No two lever security release to open the hood and then retract the internal retention finger that was on display at SHOT two and a half years ago.
So, yeah. Good holster. But Blackhawk can do more.

The parent company also owns Bushnell which also has a product catalog that is hard to make sense of. They have a bunch of shitty holsters they could STOP making (looking at you Serpa) and dedicate all those resources to the T-Series.

While I agree that this appears to be somewhat problematic, it's kind of a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't for holster makers. It's also a problem for that magazine release to be fully exposed, get bumped by some object, and end up with a 1 shot pistol. This happened many times with our officers, both in training and in the field, using certain generations of Safariland 6300 series holsters.
To be fair, the Blackhawk T Series do have looser fitment, and allow more movement of the gun in the holster. I'll have to dig mine out of the box and check this out.
Spoke to an old coworker today, and the issue of holsters came up. My old place has 25 guys running 9mm 320s in Alien Gear Rapid Force holsters in a field test. My friend has one of these officers working on his squad, and asked what he thought of the gun and holster. The officer gave him 'that look', and said "Watch this." He proceeded to slap the side of the grip, and the magazine popped out. He then twisted his hips vigorously, and the magazine popped out. He jogged down the hallway, and the sound of the gun rattling in the holster was noticeable. I hadn't recalled that loose fit was an issue with the Rapid Force rig, but apparently with these ones it's a major issue. Apparently several other departments have complained about the same issue.
Posting as a reply to this again since it's related.

I did a T&E on the Rapid Force for over a year. It did well and is now authorized. Over the past year it has become the issue holster of a nearby mid-size agency and is also approved or issued in a number of other local agencies. I just went and tried to make the mag pop out by abusing the holster, with no success. But, it is an M&P holster and the P320 is forbidden at my agency so I have no ability to test that gun and holster. Maybe the mag popping out is an issue for that specific gun? I can't test it.
There is a new version iii of the rapid force holster and perhaps they have addressed the issue with the P320. I assume it has to do with proximity and flex of the holster to the button. Supposedly they have addressed the finger in the holster issue. In the thread about the finger in the holster issue, SouthNarc said Aliengear was sending him a holster to test for that issue, but I have not seen any results yet.On mine, I can get my little finger in the holster but not enough to fire the gun. A child or someone with thin fingers probably could. I have a few of the new version on order.
As to rattling, there is an adjustment for fit on the holsters and if not adjusted, the gun will rattle, but so far on my holster and others I have handled, a bit of adjustment makes the gun at least as rattle-free as a Safariland if not more so.
Blackhawk does not make a duty holster for the M&P with optic (or at least none is listed on their website), so I have not used or tested one. We have some in service and they seem fine, but I have not seen much innovation or effort by Blackhawk in the past couple of years so I don't know if they are very interested in the LE market. When I obtained the Alien gear holster to test, I also reached out to Blackhawk to see if they had pans to accommodate an M&P with optic, but they were not very helpful.
I was a Safariland fanboy for many years, but over the past few years have seen lots of problems with QC and mostly avoid them where possible now.

I've been using a Blackhawk L3D holster for my M&P 2.0 with RDS and X300T. It's listed as Glock 22 Gen 5, VP9 and M&P w/o safety with light channel for TLR1 on https://www.copquest.com/blackhawk-t-series-l3d-level-3-light-bearing-red-dot_26-4925.htm
I prefer it over my safarilands and I'm able to scoop draw from it like I do with my USPSA rig.

I never saw that Blackhawk listed a Level 3 Optic capable holster. If you use their website holster finder option, that holster does not show up. I have some discomfort with he idea of a multi-fit holster, but I am glad it is working for you and may be a fine choice.

I saw on socialist media that Blackhawk will soon have a flapper/hood that's compatible with the boxy enclosed emitters like the ACRO. I didn't see specifically what models but I'm hopeful the new hood will carry over into all the available fits.
Speaking of fit, did Blackhawk drop the Staccato 2011 holster? I don't see it available on the Staccato website.
