Very nice. I’ll be taking the family over landing in Mendocino next month. Been working on my storage solution and ordered some rotorpax. Probably going to get new tires before as well.

I’ll leave with a photo of my rig since photobucket canned my account and the photos from my over landing thread are not available.

Meh. Slickrock. That's essentially a paved surface based on the videos I've seen (real popular with mountain bikers, but looks like riding in skate park to me). I didn't see any ground clearance issues either.

We don't have that here. Our rocks are covered with dirt, muck, and water. Sometimes the rocks aren't even anchored in place.

Yes, its not as challenging as it first appears. I went a lot of crazy places in an old 2wd IH farm pickup before getting 4wd pickups. Chains made a huge difference in mud and snow. Nothing replaces 4wd or some modifications, its still funny to see people claim many things like special tall megatires and extensive vehicle mods are absolutely required to go nearly anywhere off pavement. I see much the same thing in motorcycles. "Good thing we had our XYZ super offroad all purpose superbikes...(insert long list of tires and other offroad specialty items)." when all the vids and pics in the ride report looks like pretty easy stuff on an H-D big twin (said by someone thats ridden an H-D hardtail and swingarm on many many miles of dirt roads).

I did a lot of camping in the Mojave with lowered sporty cars and four-inch sidewalls. Just pay attention to where the wheels are going.

No cool action shots but here's my '84 K5. I call it Waldo. It's currently having a new radiator and fan clutch put in it. I want to lift it, either 2 or 4", haven't decided but I'm leaning toward 2".

I wanted a comfortable daily that got close 20mpg but also had 4wd so I could go on longer trips to explore ghost towns and out-of-the-way places that my 2wd Sonoma wasn't suited for. So I got this pile specifically because it has a manual transfer case and manual hubs. Then everything broke. I'm still shaking it down for issues but soon it'll be getting some new wheels and tires and eventually it'll get repainted. I currently refer to it as Purple Rain. Might change it to Prince after the paint job.

I would rock a Bronco II. Even looked at several on Craigslist and such.

If I something happened to my Blazer I would get an XJ next most likely. That or one of the Grand Cherokees. One of my buddies has a '84 2 door with a 4 cylinder and a manual tranny. That thing was surprisingly good offroad.

Just a 2" lift and some LT245/65R17 8 ply BFG AT KO2's. Upgraded brake pads and zinc dichromate coated, drilled and slotted rotors. KYB Trail Boss large bore steering stabilizer shock.

Indeed. I had a 1992 for several years. That thing never left me walking. I got a little scared of the 4.0L piston slap and dumped it cheap. Ran into the guy I sold it to three years later and he was still driving on the same engine and had put another 40k on it without a problem. Great vehicle off road.

The biggest drawback I found with them is that the track width is too narrow to drive on the two-tracks in a cattle pasture comfortably.

I had a '99 4dr XJ 4x4 Sport. Bought it new and drove it for ten years finally trading it in qith right at 200k miles on it. Had to do a little work to it over the miles. Mainly AC compressors but changed at least one alternator and had one other engine related mechanical problem I can't specifically recall now. Needed new shocks. Overall very mechanically reliable.with the 4.0L inline 6. I shoulda kept it.

It took me places where it probably shouldn't have but neither the Jeep nor I knew any better. Never got stuck. If I had one, Id put a small lift on it.

My brother has an older XJ 2dr as a knock around.

Last weekend me and 2 buddies went camping up at Flagpole Knob in Virginia. We did a little bit of four wheeling, but since we drove our trucks there from 2.5hrs away, we had to be a bit conservative in our approach.

I'm driving the 4Runner in the lead. One buddy is driving his Land Rover Discover II, the third is recording with his potato phone (he bailed on driving early on because the trail was much rougher and his new F150 was struggling):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrv8oz4mq6U

A little meadow a couple miles down the trail (after 3 water crossings and lots of rock steps). You might recognize the same meadow and same truck from an earlier post of mine in the same thread. The first pic was taken about 15 years ago when the trail was nowhere near as rough as it is now:

This is about 20 minutes from my house, if that far.

I've literally crashed a V-Strom 650 all the way to the bottom of those mountains when I took the wrong trail. Thought I knew where I was, nope. There was no turning around as steep as it was. Nothing but loose rock all the way to the bottom, brakes were useless and would lock up and you're still gaining speed sliding. So you throw the bike down on purpose. Pick it up and get back on it again (sometimes), crash in another 50' or so. I spent like $750 on plastics, handlebars, brake and clutch levers, mirrors, bar ends, and shifter once I got home from that one. Plus new riding jacket and pants.

All because I thought I was on the trail to Switzer Dam and instead I was on some ghost of a trail that ended up above Union Springs.

I have some soft shackles and a kennetic pull rope from Bubba Gear, US made, but barely used it so far so I am not a solid testimonial based on experience, it appears to be properly made. I also had some stuff from an outfit called Valens rigging but I don't see them around anymore, it worked very well.

Yesterday I took the family on a little off-road adventure. We got up and were on our way by 8:30am, hitting the trail at 11am after a stop to top up fuel and buy a trail pass ($5/day, but 3-day and yearly passes available). The trail isn't overly tough and any 4x4 with decent clearance will do fine. The trip took about 1:20 to cover the 7 mile length with a couple stops and pulling over to let others pass in the opposite direction. There were no yahoos and everyone was polite and friendly. We started at the Little Fort Campground end and exited at the Edinburg Gap end. There were parking lots and public toilets at each end. Highly recommended to any VA locals who want to get into offroading or have an easy trail to take non-enthusiasts on.

2019 I was able to spend 10 days exploring WY via the most remote NF roads I could find across the state, as I hate tourist places. I think I could spend years doing that and never get to all the places I wanted to see there. I hope to do the same in late summer 2021 for Eastern ID and parts of MT. I am hoping to get some FR route suggestions from Lost River and some of you other ID/MT peeps before I launch next year. It seems to be just as beautiful as the WY rockies.

A loop through the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway (WY) into ID, through the Tetons, to see Craters of the Moon, up the Pahsimero Valley (Elmer Keith area, and lots of neat back country) to Salmon ID, over towards Missoula, stopping to check out the Big Hole Valley MT before you get there, then down the Gallatin Range and exploring all along the way would be a pretty stellar trip. :)

Thank you, you gave me enough guidance to spend the rest of the winter making plots on google maps. At least I know the first 50 miles of that very well, starting up 296 and launching from Cody, and I wanted to loop a trip to Sunlight Basin back into this some way some how....

As I look at the FR opportunities on that route I could do a lot of interesting stuff!

I have never been a Nissan fan, but always liked the Xterras. Got a deal I couldn't pass up on this one today. With current events, it will probably take a little bit to get it plated. Looking forward to testing out the electronic locking diff.
It came with a nice front bumper and a sturdy winch. More pix to follow when I can get it out. This one will likely go to my oldest daughter, but I am going to use it to teach both girls how to drive a standard transmission first. Then I will probably have to put a clutch in it. Lol.

I had a chance to dive into the paperwork to see what I got. The Xterra is a 2006 model. It has a new windshield, new headlights. The interior is spotless. The winch is a Warn with a remote. In the last 50000 miles, the driveshaft, rear diff bearings and ring and pinion, rear e-locker, driveshaft, clutch, front struts, and rear springs have all been replaced. The tires are in great shape. LT265/70R17 Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac. The spare wheel and tire match the rest. The engine is up there at 275000 miles but runs strong. It has always had regular oil changes with Mobil 1 synthetic. The timing chains have been replaced and the timing cover replaced with the updated model. Not a hint of a leak under it.

The EBCM needs to be replaced, but the guy gave me a factory Nissan part with it. Just have to install it and have it programmed. He also gave me the original front bumper and a spare PCM he bought just in case. I will have to replace one of the cats.

That looks like Shaffer's parking lot which is nearby. Their carry out is wildly above average.
I don't recall the name of the place (Shaffer's doesn't ring a bell), but it's just a little country store in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mtns outside of Northern Virginia.

Sounds like it's going to be a great rig. The Xterras are supposed to be pretty capable machines.

My daughter and I took the Xterra to the western slope on a scouting trip for the fall bear season today. It was a great trip for a short two-day affair.

You will see the haze from wildfire smoke in the pics.

Scrub oak thickets. Prime bear habitat when they are in hyperphagia.
