He was genuinely brave and heroic in service of a noble cause. Not a particularly impressive politician, but few are.

I was at the Capitol maybe 15 years ago and I spotted him across the room. I tend not to be star struck but I made my way over to shake his hand and tell him how much I admired him.

I met Representative Lewis back when I lived in metro Atlanta as part of a work function. He and I had an interesting discussion. While we did not agree on too much politically, I got the sense that he was trying to better the country as opposed to bettering himself. His positions were well reasoned; where we differed was on initial assumptions, human behavior, and how proposed legislation would actually work. When we parted, I told him that while I did not live in his district, I would vote for him if I did. I believed him to be an honorable man, a rarity in my dealings with Members of Congress.
