View Full Version : G19.5 MOS & 507C V2 Slide Lock Issue

I sighted in and put a couple hundred focused rounds through my newish G19.5 MOS / Holosun 507C V2 / CHPWS Defender V4 plate.

When using two different G19.5 mags the slide wouldn't last round lock back when using a strong 2 hand forward push/pull grip. Using a loose grip, one handed, or 17.5 mag were fine. Ammo was duty G2 and Ranger 147g as well as Federal 147g ball.

Maybe the 19.5 spring is less powerful than the 17.5? Maybe the big Holosun slows down the slide just that bit too much? Maybe I'm too strong [emoji6]?

Any thoughts welcome.

Dennis.

19.5 and optics (including Holosun) is a proven combo.

Are you sure your "strong" grip isn't somehow making contact with either side of the slide release ?

This is a common issue with shooters with large hands and / or high grip (to include myself). Kagwerk's makes raised slide release lever to counter this issue.

I can also recommend trying the Kagwerks extended, raised slide release. I tend to have a very aggressive thumbs forward grip, similar to Bob Vogel. The last few years, I've found I really don't want to compromise grip method, because everything starts to fall apart from there (at least for me). Maintaining that aggressive grip, the Kagwerks release has been the only option I've found that has consistently worked for me. For reference, other releases I've tried: Vickers, factory extended, Ghost Bullet, Ghost Bullet Forward, Aro-Tek Sure Touch (this one helped me a bit), even tried just cutting the external portion off OEM slide releases so there's nothing at all (worked, but less desirable).

Just be aware, there's a lot of holsters you'll probably have to modify to work with this slide release. Not a big deal for kydex, though if it's something injection molded, might be more of a problem.

For reference, this is what my grip looks like, despite this being an old photo. My focus tends to be clamping the base of my thumb part of the palm as high into the left side of the gun as possible. On a Glock, that inevitably means being clamped down right on top of the slide release area.

UGH! That's probably it, now I feel stupid. I have been running G19.3 and G17.3 as primary weapons with OEM extended releases for over a decade with my strong grip having a bit of rise in my support thumb to clear them. I did some measurements and it seems the backstrap area above the G19.5 non-beavertail grip panel is a bit shorter than on the G19.3 and my grip is barely blocking/touching on the G19.5. Pics below.

What's interesting is that using a 17.5 mag overcomes my light thumb pressure as well as a shooting a G17.5 with the "same" backstrap locks back ok.

Unfortunately this will be a duty weapon and I cannot use 3rd party slide releases.

Options:
1. Change Grip a bit to make sure my thumb is angled up more
2. Change Backstrap to beavertail
3. Go back to OEM standard release
4. Don't shoot to lock [emoji847]

Seems like option #1 is the least impactful and probably the "safest" for general Glock operations?

Thanks guys for the great help!

Dennis.

I would try the OEM side stop, as it is likely a much easier change than your grip.

The Gen 4 and Gen 5 with either of the factory medium back straps installed should be equivalent to the Gen 3.

Personally I get the best results with a medium on G17/34/45 and a Large or a grip force adaptor on the G19.

I dont care for the factory extended release as for me it causes premature lock back in the middle of a string of fire. On my work G17 I stick with the standard release and just accept the slide won't lock back 100%.

If you run in to trouble with your current modified grip, I suggest trying to wrap your dominant thumb around to the outside of the base knuckle of your support thumb. Helped me with not inadvertently hitting the slide lock when I shot Sigs.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

I'm going to play with some different 19.5 backstraps as well as try and make sure my support thumb is angled better in general for safer Glock usage [emoji3]

Will see!

I would definitely suggest trying the standard Glock slide release as well.

I would definitely suggest trying the standard Glock slide release as well. For better or worse I have 15+ years of running the OEM extended slide release on all my duty and carry Glocks with no issues. It is a part of how I run the gun. This is the first time I have had an issue and it could have been exacerbated by my focused MRDS small group sight in attempts.

We will see!

Dennis.
