I know some of you do some woodworking. Last weekend I was to help my BIL install some trim (base, shoe, casing, crown) in a room they're renovating. My Bostich trim nailer (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JTYO2AW)would only work intermittently. As best I can tell the issue is that the plunger is not consistently retracting far enough to pick up the next nail from the rack. I can lift the hinged cover and push it completely rearward with a screwdriver and it will pick up at least the next nail. Sometimes it was even good for 10 or 15 more nails, but would happen again eventually.

I applied oil with no change in results.

How can I fix this? Is there a spring or something that needs to be replaced?

Let's see the plunger, the nails being used, and give us the exact model.

That silver thing I'm pointing to in the picture, the plunger, should be fully retracted.

I have two Bostitch nailers like that, and I had the same problem. Is there a burr on the end of the end that drives the nails? If so, remove the plunger and stone it off. That fixed my issue. After the repair, I only used Bostitch brand nails, and I never had a repeat problem.

Be careful with oil and trim nailers. The oil can get on the nails and stain the wood.

^^^ This. I had the same thing happen. Same fix. I also had the screws on the part around the ram come loose, allowing the ram to pass the nail head and jam up. The nail magazine also bows inward pinching the nails. I filed it but it still does it to some degree when colder. Same for a replacement magazine. The older steel nail magazines worked great. Plastic, not so much.

Ive also found some of my nailers work best with certain brands of nails. My Hitachi framing nailer works best with Bostich nails. It was worth paying a little for for far less glitches.
