View Full Version : Olight announces their SF Scout competitor today

The Olight Odin, follow this PF affiliate link (https://olight.idevaffiliate.com/idevaffiliate.php?id=422). I got my advance light Saturday and it's extremely impressive. What really impressed me is the engineering behind the mount. You attach the mount to your rifle and then you can easily swap between two positions. The light is magnetically charged via a USB cable. It's advertised as having 2000 lumens with a 300 meter throw. I found that it's about 90% of a Surefire DF600's illumination, but...for $121 you get this light, the mount, and a pressure switch. In other words, everything you need.

It's a no brainer purchase for someone whom needs a good carbine/PDW light.

Edited to add more comparison data between this and the Surefire M600DF (https://www.amazon.com/SureFire-Weaponlight-Rechargeable-Batteries-Lightjunction/dp/B07PFLLKY8/ref=as_li_ss_tl?crid=17M0MYRSQMN0N&dchild=1&keywords=surefire+m600df&qid=1592237274&sprefix=Surefire+m,aps,155&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExNUJPUVRHV0xBMTNXJ mVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMzcxNDM5MldWNE1CQ0lHSUpYWiZlbmN yeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNzUzNDg5MTRDQzU5OFdBRkhJWSZ3aWRnZ XROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05 vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=&linkCode=ll1&tag=ratio07-20&linkId=cfaea6265ef9c6b394cad50ca8de5d6e&language=en_US).

The two lights alongside each other. The Olight is .95” wide on the body, the Surefire is .85”. I need to order an SF ring mount, see if the Olight will fit.
55992

The Olight weighs more because of the higher capacity battery it comes which is a 3.6v 21700 5000MaH. The SF has a 3.7v 18650 3400 MaH battery.
https://pistol-forum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=55888
https://pistol-forum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=55889

If you had longer hex screws, you could attach the Surefire to the Olight mount on the weapon. Both lights ship with a Picatinny rail attachment.
https://pistol-forum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=55890

Both lights disassembled as far as I could get them broken down. I’m asking Olight for more details on their emitter and how to get it off.
55993
55994

The Olight gives you the option of rear switch or pressure switch as shipped, no need to buy a pressure switch separately; this is a huge budgetary advantage for those of you not ready to shell out $120 for a SF pressure switch (https://www.amazon.com/Mil-Spec-Activation-Platform-Scoutlight-Weaponlight/dp/B001V2X6X4/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2AJJEWX0KHD7Z&dchild=1&keywords=surefire+pressure+pad&qid=1592238281&sprefix=Surefire+pre%2Caps%2C152&sr=8-5). The read switch also vibrates when first activated as to so warn you of a potential light ND (negligent discharge). Note the elegant simplicity of the attachment method of the pressure switch.
55909

The Olight fits Surefire Scout pattern mounts such as the Thorntail offset mount (https://www.amazon.com/Impact-Weapons-Components-Thorntail-Adaptive/dp/B00HRFDO68/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2UCQCNHH2JGNQ&dchild=1&keywords=haley+thorntail&qid=1592241579&sprefix=Haley+th%2Caps%2C147&sr=8-1)!

I know, I am a shill; but I'm just impressed. I think you'd be out over $400 for a comparable Surefire with pressure switch.

This looks awesome! I have been looking at a scout but might have to give this a shot given the price difference. Any idea if Olight has any IR illuminators in the works?

It would be nice, but MLOK Picatinny rail sections are cheap (https://www.amazon.com/Semedea-Picatinny-13-Slot-Aluminum-Section/dp/B082NLHVQ2).

Ditto. Looking at the underside of the light mount, it looks like 2 torx screws are holding the mounting bracket to the light body. Maybe you can pull that off and use an MLOK ring mount? Assuming it is 1.00" dia.

You can probably answer this question - do you think that bracket cam come off to allow an MLOK ring mount? Seems like it would be more streamlined than adding the extra length of pic rail if that is a possibility.

I had used them in the past. But I prefer as few components as possible. I honestly believe they would sell a bunch with mlok capability.

I think what I am seeing from Olight's website - the remote switch pushes on and attaches magnetically. So the rear, metal tail, with the remote switch removed, functions as a normal pressure/clicky type switch?

In other words, I can quickly snap the light off and use it as a hand-held light, if my hand held goes dead for some reason?

Brilliant again.

If the long-term durability is there then Olight may have just killed Surefire's dominance in the weapon light market. I'm okay with that, Surefire has needed to move faster for a long time now.

Yes, I got a Magpul cantilever mount for the Streamlight on the 1301T. Very pleased with that application.
I suppose I could use the Scout Mount or another cantilever mount.

I really like the “remove the light and use as a handheld” option with the Olight mount - even better on a HD shotgun.

Is the mount on the light reversible? For example can you put the light on the right side of a gun, with the unlocking knob pointing upwards?

EDIT: can the light be used with CR123 batteries? (Obviously the output would be significantly lower.)

@BehindBlueI's (https://pistol-forum.com/member.php?u=11374) has that light, he posted a mini review somewhere.

I have one as well, and I like it a great deal. Very cost effective. I have been carrying and playing with it on my nightly walks. I like the throw, the amount of spill is good, and the color/hue/temperature/Kelvins of the light is nice.

I also bought a pair of them big 'ol rechargeable batteries with it, which I can now use in the new light I'm buying this evening. Which is nice.

I am debating buying two bundles. An FDE setup would be nice for the 6.6 Creedmor hunting build I am working on. Having a light on an antelope hunting rifle could prove problematic. But I do like the idea of snapping it on there for dispatching feral pigs.

And if the IR setup uses the same mounts (hint hint) then it would be a great investment for hog hunters.

There is also the Mega Pack Bundle - Which isn't listed in the sale link LL posted above -

https://www.olightstore.com/mega-pack-double.html

Contents:

MEGA PACK: Odin+ Perun Mini + S2R Baton II PU+ i5T GR + Headband/Patch for Perun Mini to clip to.

I don't know what color the Odin will be in this package. It appears the Perun Mini will be black, the Baton II will be Desert Tan, and the i5T will be Gunmetal Grey.

So, last night I tested the SF M600DF against the Olight Odin. The Odin has much more throw and is a warmer tone of light. The Odin won. However...the real surprise was the little Olight Valkyrie Pro. This diminutive WML easily outclassed the SF M600DF. So, you basically could have Scout light power on your handgun. Really impressive.

Apologize if I missed it on their site, but does anyone happen to know if the battery for this Odin sale item is the same customized battery at $26 that lists itself as "Customized rechargeable 21700, 5000mAh 3.6v Battery specifically designed for the Seeker 2 Pro/Warrior X Pro/M2R Pro Warrior/Seeker 2"? It pops up at the bottom of the Odin page as a recommended accessory, which has me assuming they're the same, but that's not exactly the same as a "yes."

I'm inclined to get one of these, and it feels like I should want a second battery...

Disappointing that the Candella is only 22.5K. Better than the Surfire DF which we all knew was garbage compared to Modlite, Cloud and even Streamlight.

Nearest competitor for this is the Streamlight railmount kits which push out 27.1K Candella.

I wonder if it can put out the full 2K lumens for the entire 2 hours continuously or if it throttles itself when it gets too hot like other Olights.

1)Excellent handwarmer :-)
2)Interesting mount. The ability to quick-detach for handheld might me useful. I dunno if the quick-detach remote switch attachment will prove reliable, or if the collar will be prone to getting inadvertently moved out of the locked position. Kinda wish it was slightly less quick-detach, like maybe threaded on.
3)The magnetic charging thru the switch means you can short the switch ... the instructions warn "the tail switch may not work while immersed in sea water or other conductive media. Please try to keep it clean and dry". Ordinary rain water is less conductive than salt water, but not an insulator. It would be a bummer if it failed in the rain. It also says "Do not short circuit the switch ... will result in a loss of current below 3mA ... battery drain if in this state for too long". 3 mA isn't a lot for a 5000 mAH battery, but still ... a conventional remove-to-charge battery and switch wouldn't pose that problem. Too clever by half, perhaps??
4)The sun is still up, so dunno how it works as, you know, a light yet :-)

In hand. Bright. Heavy. Flexible mounting solutions. Not sure how enthused about the proprietary charging setup. Stay tuned.

Similar first impressions. Ended up having to order a Thorntail2 1913 mount so I can clear the stupidly large screw head on my MBUS pro front sight so i'll probably be waiting a couple more weeks before I get it set up the way I want.

edit: Also, everything about it screams quality, down to the packaging. The thing is boxed up like an iphone.

Yes, no pics. Preliminary: Long throw. Warm beam color produces truer terrain, feature, and object color. Bright. Spill at distance was quite bright. Seemed to penetrate tinted auto glass okay.

I agree with this. It’s a much warmer tint than Surefires.

I went and waved it around the yard last night. Bear in mind that we are surrounded by pine woods starting 30 to 40 yds from the house, and no light looks too deeply into the woods (because the bright trees in the foreground keep you from seeing the dimmer, further areas). The next time we're camping in an open area it will be fun to try it again.

It's bright, no surprise there. It has a bright center and a fairly abrupt transition to a dimmer spill area. Personally, I would prefer a 'floodier' beam, with a less abrupt boundary between the center and edges. For me, anyway, if you are looking at an object in the bright center it's easier to miss something in the dimmer edges than if the beam is more diffuse. My sense is that a light with this many lumens can light up 50 or 100 yds pretty well with a fairly floody beam, and that is likely far enough for most situations that might be a justifiable defensive shooting. It would be different, maybe, if you were hunting coyotes or something - horses for courses. And of course, you can write what I know about using rifles at night with a crayon on a matchbook. Maybe a super bright center is good for disrupting an opponents vision or something.

ETA: I like the 21700 battery size - 50% more electrons than a 18650, but doesn't feel bulky at all (it shouldn't it's only 3mm bigger in diameter). I hope more handhelds use them.

I only compared it to one other light, a 'Nitecore new P30', which is an uber thrower. It had a hot spot that was noticeably brighter and narrower ...duh.

Anyone try their Odin out in the dark yet?

Just did.

These photos are from my neighborhood at about 25 yards. I'm illuminating a judgmental target from Tier1Targets - run by a veteran also tied to Three Rangers whiskey Clay Othic. This was set-up for the warm-up of a low-light NLTA class I ran a couple weeks ago.

I choose a location directly under a street light intentionally. Could this "burn" through the other light source or not?

A few initial observations from handling the light tonight - the on button & constant on feature come across a bit inconsistent or whonky to me so far. A little more annoying is that there is an audible and tactile vibration, buzzing every 3-5 activations. I'll get used to it, if it continues, but I can see it being a problematic stimulus during an encounter with another, non-compliant human.

Finally, it's a big/tall mount. It sticks out from the pic rail on my 1301 forearm much more than I'd like. Especially given the way attachments tend to catch on door jams, furniture, etc. I'll be interested to see how much effect any rotational issues have on the forearm.

"A little more annoying is that there is an audible and tactile vibration, buzzing every 3-5 activations. "

Per the manual, I think it's telling you the battery is low.

I agree the tailcap switch is kinda fiddly. I think the notion is:
-partial press for low, full press (to the click) for high
-short press to stay on, long press for momentary
but the boundary between short/long in particular is fussy enough it's hard to be sure what you are actually going to get.

AFAICT?? the remote switch is high only, and the same short to stay on, long for momentary, but overall seems easier to use than the tailcap.

BTW, the tailcap itself is magnetic, not just the charger thingy. Given the 'don't short the tailcap' advice you'd want to be careful tossing it into a glovebox or whatever.

Is the mount on the light reversible? For example can you put the light on the right side of a gun, with the unlocking knob pointing upwards?

Can the light be used with CR123 batteries? (Obviously the output would be significantly lower.)

I haven't found answers to these questions yet. Any input from those of you who have this light?

>Is the mount on the light reversible? For example can you put the light on the right side of a gun, with the unlocking knob pointing upwards?

Yes. depending on which side you'd have to pull forward or back to detach it. N.b. there are two mount slots on the picatinny adapter, one on the top, one on the side, so that gives you some flexibility as well.

>Can the light be used with CR123 batteries? (Obviously the output would be significantly lower.)

I wouldn't count on it. The battery is a 21700, where the 21 is diameter in mm and 700 is length in mm (approximately ... ).

123's are slightly smaller in diameter than 18650 batteries (18 mm...), which is why some Surefire tubes have to be bored out too use 18650's. So you would have to make/buy a sleeve to hold the 123's centered, I think, and with a conductive spacer to adapt the length

Problem 2 is that 2 123s put out 6.0 volts (3 volts each), vs 3.7ish for lithium ions like the 21700 (or 18650's). You *can* design circuitry to handle either voltage, but it's not a given that it would work. And testing whether it works might, or might not, damage the light :-(.

I have a Nitecore 'new P30' that takes 21700 (which they call 2150 ... long story) batteries, and a sleeve to adapt length and diameter to one 18650 or two 123's, and they spec it as OK for that. But over the years I have heard of lights designed for a 18650 that were fried by using 2x123. If the manufacturer won't tell you, you'd have to risk the light to know.

(you can see the adapter I'm talking about by scrolling down here, the 5th pic down or so:

Good luck with that...
I just did an online chat with Olight customer service. Asked for the status of the Odin order I placed on 21 Jun. They gave me a tracking link that showed that a shipping label had been generated on 23 Jun, but was still in “pre-shipment” status. When I asked when it would actually ship, it went like this:

CS - Due to the epidemic, our work has been hindered a lot. We are very sorry for the inconvenience.
Me - in that case, I'd like to cancel my order.
CS - I am sorry that I cannot help you cancel the order at present.
Me - who can do that, and when can they do that, then?
CC - The staff couldn't find your package among thousands of packages
Me - So - It's packaged, but hasn't been shipped for over a week?
CS - Yes, our fans are helping
Me - I'm sorry - I don't understand what that means.
CS - If you really don't like our products, we suggest you return the package directly at that time. We respect your choice
Me - Ok - I'd like to be able to use the product to assess that... Can you estimate when it will actually be shipped?
CS - We'll try to complete the delivery within two weeks
have a good day!

So - not impressed with Olight customer service. I can understand a delay in shipment, but until I contacted them today, I had no communication re: the status of my order. And the initial response was a link showing that it was “pre-shipment”, whatever that means.

I sent a message to their CS on Thursday since I can’t log in for some reason. I got a nice reply within 24 hours saying that my batch has shipped from the factor and is on the way to the US location. They don’t have an exact time yet since with covid a lot of international shipping is slowed.

Would I have preferred to have a good definitive time to expect mine? Sure, but I think that’s at least a reasonable response in a reasonably timely manner. I’m willing to wait a bit more after that, especially since others who ordered roughly the same time ( I ordered the afternoon of the 22nd) are getting shipping notices.

I’m saving a good deal of money so I will take a little negative.

Mine arrived yesterday, and I already put the i5T into my pocket to replace my missing Microstream.

My only aggravation was they removed the accessories from their website during the sale, because I would have ordered at least a couple extra clips. I need to remove the hat piece, because I find that catches on so much stuff, that is a good chunk of why I lose flashlights.
Interesting switch, press for on, hold for a few seconds for full on/bright. (probably make my battery last longer)

I currently have a rail section mounted at 3 o’clock. I want to use the Olight factory mount set so the light would end at 1:30.

Is there a taller than standard (Hi profile?) MLOK rail section out there? The massive MBUS mounting screwhead is preventing me from installing the light in that vertical position. I need the rail section to be a 1/8” - 1/4” taller than the MI unit that I got.

I’m open to any other inexpensive solutions.

That's not what I'm looking for. Too long and would ultimately raise the height too much Thanks tho.

I've added a pic to the above post. Hopefully it clarifies. Best I can tell, the standard rail section is 0.377" tall. I think I need something about a half inch tall. Or a riser that accomplishes the same.

It's not super streamlined, but considering Low Profile rail section (0.277") (https://arisakadefense.com/products/low-profile-picatinny-rail-m-lok) + a 1/2" rail riser. (https://www.brownells.com/optics-mounting/rings-mounts-amp-bases/rifle-bases/ar-mount-one-half-inch-picatinny-riser-matte-prod39278.aspx)

A 1/8" - 3/16" or so piece of polymer or aluminum that goes between the MLOK rail and the rail section would be seem perfect.

I received mine last week (Thursday I think) , but was in a week long class with Massad Ayoob and then Sunday flew out to NOLA so I did not have time before to mount the light. I was able to rectify that last night.

Put it on the 1301 in exactly the way I wanted and everything about it was super easy, with the sole exception of it taking a loooong time to fully charge the light. Good and easy operation, light worked well, and it seems about as secure as a shotgun light will get. I probably won't be able to shoot it for a a couple of weeks, but nothing had given me an indication it won't run smoothly.

I also really like the little extra EDC light they sent. It has replaced the Stiletto for work dress carry ( on a Pocket Shield). Good little bonus.

I finally received my two Odin bundles on Monday. I never got any email notification about shipping or anything like that, but at least I finally got them. I didn't have time to open the package or even know it was the Odin bundles until I got around to it today.

I gotta say, aside from the same long charging time that Mr Burch observed, I'm very pleased with it for the money. The pressure switch mount is surprisingly good, the button logic is very good, the light is very bright, even, and full and I'm very happy with the result.

I'm still deciding how I'm going to mount it on my KAC-railed 6933 pistol build, but I love the slick mounting solution for it, it gives me a lot of options!

Fwiw, a few hundred various shotshells into the experiment with one of these on a 1301.

Shooting a demo yesterday and the locking mechanism on the mount had switched to unlock. After the third or fourth shot of six, the light ejected itself from the mount and hit mother earth. Re-mounted & re-locked it without issue.

So far, it's not a bad light.

Surefire is riding on their name and the fact that they are American made. To be fair the American made carries a lot of weight in the military, law enforcement and gun community. Even those among us that don't have problems buying products from China would certainly prefer to buy American if there was an actual competitive product in terms of features.

However their reputation and being American made can't carry them forever. I would hope they know this and it would lead them to some more innovation but then they release products like this and it makes me think they don't.
