View Full Version : Praise for the ESEE Izula

Just to throw it out there for for anyone not into dedicated edge in blades, I recently pulled out the ESEE Izula (https://www.amazon.com/ESEE-ESIZULASS-BRK-Izula-440C-Stainless/dp/B00TJQ13SO/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3E2WF1SST47G2&dchild=1&keywords=esee+izula&qid=1592262161&sprefix=Esee%2Caps%2C148&sr=8-3) that I've had for a while, used a little outdoors but mostly gathering dust. Stuck it in the waistband and been using it for all my normal indoor/outdoor chores, and it's a hell of a knife. Cuts like crazy, and the included sheath is serviceable, if a little clunky. I think the next step is to strip the coating and put a little vinegar patina on it.

I'm thinking I might pick up a Cadiru (https://www.amazon.com/ESEE-Knives-Candiru-Handle-Polymer/dp/B00O24SOBM/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=esee+candiru&qid=1592262212&sr=8-1) to play with pocket carry in chinos and denim. Anyone have any experience with that?

Although I'll have to hide it from the lady. The other day:

Her: Did you buy yourself a second tomahawk? You barely ever take the first one down from the wall to use it.

Me: Uhhhhh, no. I bought YOU your FIRST tomahawk. As an early birthday present.

Her: You're so sweet! *grabs said tomahawk, walks away humming some Beyonce song*

I have since reclaimed it, at least for now.

The Izula and Candiru are little workhorses. Love them.

Since I gave mine away, I appropriated the pink Izula that Jeff and Mike gave my wife. In fact, it resides in one of your fine sheathes.

Hopefully she doesn’t find it and know where Candiru fish are alleged to swim... :D

I EDC an Izula in the OEM sheath attached to my belt by a small Tek Lok at @4:00 behind my pistol. Not the latest, greatest tactical carry but I use it to cut “stuff” multiple times daily. It’s a great little knife and has for the most part replaced all my folders.

If I had a feminine side, I'd touch it all the time.

This may prove inspirational (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv-34w8kGPM) in that case. I won't post the video in this thread as it's a bit off topic...

I remember that one well. I believe that it co-starred Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington.

I like my Izulas. Very functional, less "pokey-stabby" appearing than many others.

What's the current, favored sheath? OEM is functional, always looking for better.

Tom @DSG makes a nice horizontal belt sheath for the Izula, if you don't mind that method.

I should have bought an Izula instead of the the ESEE-5 way back when I was interested in fixed knives.

Also, since knockoffs are a thing to worry about, know that the seller in the Amazon links, Prime Valley, is the one and the same as Tactical Intent, which is an authorized dealer.

I have an Izula and *had* a Candiru. I found the Candiru a bit too small for my tastes (and I generally like smaller fixed blades). The Izula is about perfect.

I found the same thing. I tried (twice!) to EDC a Candiru (back when they came with nylon/velcro sheaths), but it just didn't work for me keeping it in my pocket. The Candiru is a little too small (but still fun to have); the Izula is just right.

If anyone has trouble deciding between the Izula and Izula 2, The Knife Connection offers extended handles.
They make the Izula even more versatile.

Dang. This may cost me some money. My main complaint about the Izula is the rectangular grips. Those look better.

My kid as a 12 yo scout batonned across a 12” log over several hours with the Izula. Tough little bugger.

I roll my I2 in my front pocket for all outdoor activities around the house. Very tough useful for tasks blade shape. (oh and I stripped the black shit off the blade).

Slight necropost- I've been using the stock sheath with a small behind the belt DCC clip IWB. Works like a charm, more secure and less bulky than the stock clip, still easy to take on and off, works on any kind of pants.

Interesting. Are you using just one of them?

Yep, attached to the factory sheath, by the mouth, spine side. One of these: https://discreetcarryconcepts.com/Mod-3-1-The-JWB-HLR-Discreet-Gear-Clip%E2%84%A2-Mini-p115977218

Easy to transfer on and off, secure, stays in place on basketball shorts, track pants, jeans and chinos. Will post up a pic later.

Thank you! I like your solution a lot better than the one I had been contemplating.

Yeah, I've been fiddling with smaller fixed blades for a long time, trying to find a solution that actually works for me in terms of comfort (I move around a lot throughout the day compared to most people with large range of motion), concealability (even if legal, social circumstances present big drawbacks to getting made), accessibility (no good if it's not convenient to use to actually cut things). Being tall/long torso with a small waist makes horizontal OWB a no-go, and doesn't permit the downward angled Clinch Pick setup without serious wardrobe modifications.

A lot of single point attachments rotate too much, which can be good for comfort, but the knife sticks in a sheath with decent retention if the draw angle isn't perfect, and you just are yanking your pants up. Even more likely to happen with many taco style kydex sheets having all the attachment points on the edge side (for a "normal", edge down blade).

Those look like an improvement over my shoelace handle.

This was my wife's Izula, (we were gifted two by Jeff Randall and Mike Perrin years ago when they first came out), but I sent mine as a gift to one of our members here for his son, so I stole my wife's.

I have Tom's (Dark Star Gear) "Belt Wrap Sheath" for when I want to use the Izula as more than a neck knife.

Absolutely. It goes from being a "neck knife" (piece of heavy jewelry that is good for opening boxes) to a working knife.

Joe, what attachment method are you using? I have the sheath and the clip, but the screws on the DCC site are too short. Thanks.

It was definitely something I just yanked out of the Box 'o' Kydex, the little bin where I keep extra sheathed and fasteners and whatnot. Sorry. I can take measurements if you like.

FYI fellas,

I've been using the sheath from https://www.armatuscarry.com/store/p346/ESEE_Izula_%2F_Izula_II_-_Architect_Sheath__.html for close to 3 years now, no issues.

locks in tight, and is very adaptable.
