My ancient Doskocil gave up the ghost. Not sure that I need a Pelican but might go that route anyway.

What else should I consider?

Some folks have gone for Nanuk cases instead of Pelicans.

There's also Plano and Seahorse as always.

I bought a Pelican double gun case when I needed a case for travel. Its heavy though. Whatever you decide, it might be useful to have wheels on it. Mine did not. It can be pretty heavy carrying a case through airports. The wheels and case should be durable enough to withstand a short toss that a baggage handler might give it. I think Plano makes a similar case to the Pelican now. I found this article that might be useful,

https://www.americanhunter.org/articles/2016/5/16/best-gun-cases-for-the-traveling-hunter/

The Tuff-Pak in the article looks interesting to me.

I bought the locking Plano off Amazon and it has been excellent. No issues with air travel.

I have the Tuff-Pak. It works really well. Does not appear to be a gun case at all. It is a bit of a pain to open and show clear when necessary. You basically have to unpack and repack it. But it holds two rifles easily, with room for other soft gear.

Negrini cases are great, but can be spendy. Looks like they have a new, lower-priced model:

I followed the herd and opted for a Pelican 1200:

I have a bunch of pelicans, they are fine. I don't have any long gun cases though. The Nanuk AR case (https://www.amazon.com/s?k=nanuk+case&crid=2TNDC6MO1O3EQ&sprefix=Nanuk%2Caps%2C151&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_3_5) is on sale and vaguely tempting...

Can't speak to the other brands, but have used a variety of Pelicans over the years as camera cases. Subjected them to harsh tropical sun, beatings on long/fast/bumpy boat rides on choppy water in Keys and up Atlantic coast, lots of airline mileage, etc. They've held up very well. Other brands might do as well, and be lighter, but Pelicans are really tough.

Pelican does offer the "Air" cases and "Storm" brand, as well as their traditional cases. Those may/may not fit/work for you.

The military uses them a lot, which is perhaps a good endorsement.

And I'd second the suggestion to get a wheeled model - - - the larger cases get very heavy.

I got a BassPro/Cabelas ad yesterday that had a 53” Pelican case on sale for $70 off.

Cabelas has a "Pelican like" case under Cabelas brand that is pretty good and often on sale.

Another Pelican Case fan. We use several, mostly for photography gear, but one is a long gun case. The Pelican 1520 did its job, when a drunk driver U-turned in front of us, across our path.

Is the case for vehicle travel or air travel? For trips to the range and local travel I just use my boyt’s soft case (or the Cabela’s branded equivalent) or a plastic foam lined case. For air travel or long trip I use an old kalispel aluminum gun case I got from my father when he went to the bigger two gun kalispel case. If I was buying an air travel case today I would get a pelican or the tuff pak if I wanted to take a trip requiring multiple guns like Africa . I have been wanting to get a pelican with a soft case combo for awhile; but they are expensive. Larue has the combos on their site

Poconnor has it just right.
My AI rifle came with a Pelican Storm case and I have used another for our last three trips to Africa.
Gouges and scratches on the case and one damaged wheel but guns and optics were pristine.
The cases are heavy and you will want the wheeled model.
One of Frank Galli’s courses is on my bucket list with the AI and with the current cost of the rifle and optic I won’t lose sleep over the air travel.

I have a Negrini case for an o/u shotgun I travel to hunt with. Pelican cases for pistols with shackle combination locks for stowage in luggages. Pelican case also allows room for ammo box.

Hive,

What is the most goodest case for carrying a rifle/shotgun ammo, and a concealed carry handgun for air travel. Dated thread I'm bumping to hopefully get most current info. I'm thinking Pelican due to military time, but there may be better that I don't know about. Thanks.

Pelican… well, it is a Hardigg case before Pelican bought them out. Have to age myself by looking online… pre-2009. [emoji1787]

Definitely have to get a set of new locks for it. Had some but used for something else… maybe the move… and lost two. I want all four holes locked if I’m traveling with it and rather they all be keyed alike.

Because, the hell with those jerks at TSA…

Another Pelican Case fan.

I ended up going with this: https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/pelican-vault-v700-takedown-gun-case

The plan was to remove the barreled action from the stock, then reassemble on site. It worked and the zero remained roughly intact, but groups opened up. I later learned that this this rifle needs 12-20 rounds to settle back in to the stock. So while the tactics worked well, the strategy remains lacking.

I'm going to replace this case with one that a) does not require disassembly, and b) has wheels. It weighs 16 pounds empty. Carrying it across two airports and out to the rental car satellite each direction was a drag.

Since my first post in this thread I have bought more Pelicans. They are great. I got the bigger-ized Pelican to lug around 4 rifles in soft cases. Big recommend.

For handguns and small amounts of ammo the Pelican 1450 is a nice size.

If I was car traveling, I would roll with a soft case. If air travel, Pelican and look at the Air variety because that shit adds up. If I was needing it as a one time thing then maybe just go Harbor Freight case.

I see Pelican Cases as a sort of “there are very valuable things in here, steal me sign” so I’ll pack them in a suitcase or duffle. I have also de-stickered them and spray painted them so they look rough.

I actually got my Xtra big pelican (1740) to facilitate transporting multiple long guns more easily. The rolling wheels and big case massively simplify loading up to the range. Much less involved than going in and out with multiple soft cases full of heavy guns.
