Hi,

I have been shooting since the 60s and pistol shooting since 1971 when I got my first Concealed Carry License in New York State and New York City.

Love Shotguns, Rifles and Pistols. For those also in New York you will know what I mean when I say that my Pistol Permit is about to go from three pages to the start of page four.

Look forward to hear more for all you other pistol lovers.

Welcome! Holy smokes, that is a lot of paperwork and bureaucratic pain to endure. My hat is off to you.

Welcome, from a former New Yorker. Spent the first 35 years of my life there...escaped in the middle late 80's. Still return to see family and friends on occasion.

Welcome. I grew up in NYC but was able to leave the state six years ago. I’d prefer not to return but my entire family still lives there.

That's quite a collection. I know one guy that's into three or maybe four, but his collection is just not that interesting. Lots of lukewarm shit--old beat-up Colt small-frame revolvers, a couple Smith Js, multiple copies of Glock 9's and .45s in carry to service size. And some awful "SAFE Act Compliant" AR pistol that costs as much as a really good piston gun.

He also insists my chassis'd-up bolt guns are assault weapons, and that a threaded barrel on a Rem 700 is a no-go.

Side note: if some jackass that doesn't like you, that you also don't like, can rattle off your gun collection and home address from memory, you are doing it fucking wrong.

Welcome. Enjoy my whine.

I love Manhattan. I live on a tree lined street in the West Village in a Church built in 1839. They will spread my ashes down one of the storm sewers when I pass. Things will open again. There are 6 restaurants on my block and a hundred in a 5 block radius. As soon as they are back open, I can crawl home from many of them (and have).

There are more gun owners in Manhattan than many realize. Yes lots of paperwork, but I live9 blocks from an indoor range I belong to.

I spend half my time in Manhattan and half on the water in Sag Harbor on the East End of Long Island, where I belong to a number of shooting clubs.

During my airline days I held a lot of domiciles. Spend a number of years in Chicago, but also in Louisiana and Tennessee. Franklin was one of my favorite places to live.

Welcome!

I am a former New Yorker who moved out of there decades ago. I had the NYC Target and Premise permits for my handguns--I owned 4 at the time. Handgun permits are a pain in the ass to get. I will spare everyone the details.

I also had the longarm permit which people in NYC are required to have, though you don't need a longarm permit in NY State.. I moved out of there before it got really restrictive with longarms. Now the City prohibits any longarm with a magazine capacity in excess of 5 rounds. The way the ordnance was worded it applied to detachable longarm mags. But the licensing bureau applied it to all magazines to the point where people who had Winchester 94s were getting letters that since the magazines held 6 rounds. the owners would have to either have them modded to only hold 5 rounds or remove them from NY City.

Even though I moved away a long time ago, I still keep abreast of the laws there. From what I am reading, it seems like the West Side Pistol club is in danger of closing and has a go-fund-me page to stay open. I am wondering if there will be any gun stores left in Manhattan. Also, it seems that during the Covid-19 crisis the pistol license bureau has shot down--which means no one can get a new license or buy any new guns. I can see them using it as an excuse to shut it down indefinitely.

I would be interested in hearing about what is going on firearms.

Glad to have another NY'er on the forum. There are a bunch of us.

Thank you for the welcomes. I am looking forward to being a part of this group.

There was a lot of confusion initially regarding both the NYC firearms laws and the New York State Safe Act. Tubular magazines are exempt from the round count restriction. A M1 Garand without a bayonet lug (Mine is a Camp Perry National Match and never had one) is OK with the 8 round magazines. I got my concealed carry permit in Manhattan in 1971. Was not even living in Manhattan then. Was originally Good Until Revoked, but that was before the Safe Act. Now I do have to go through the hassle or renewal.

The Garand has a non-detachable magazine, anyway.

Renewing sucks--it's a pain in the ass even for me, and I think my collection is roughly half the size of yours--but it's better than a lot of states annual renewals with fees attached.

The En Bloc feeder clip is considered a Magazine here.

Hi Bob! Welcome here!!!
I'm a very recently retired PO with more than 36 years service on Long Island... Now that I'm a Civilian in the eyes of the SAFE Act and other laws relating to gun ownership, I'm certainly NO fan, but,

The En Bloc feeder clip is considered a Magazine here.

Bob

Where did you get that from? My research as an LEO in NY and information from my co-worker (who's a certified expert on 265 of the NYS Penal Law,) point to the NYS State Police division counsel advised early on that en blocs and stripper clips are not mags...

Additionally, tubular magazines are exempt from the round count restriction?

All feeding devices, including clips, belts, mags, and strips (other than .22 rimfire tubular magazines and curios and relics)...) are limited to ten round capacity.

Fortunately it doesn’t matter as it is only 8 rounds. This happened when I decided to register the Garand in Manhattan. Was always at my house in Sag Harbor. It was the officer at the Queens Firearms Department that told me. Also that over 10 capacity was fine in a tubular magazine if it was original. It is amazing how little each department seems to know. Same with the State Police. In Suffolk you buy a purchase voucher. You take it to the dealer and complete a deal. It is not on your permit at that point yet and you can travel with the voucher and pistol to the sheriffs office to have it added to your permit. In some other counties you have to have the gun added to your permit before you can pick up up. A Orange Countu bases State Police officer told me if he caught me with a handgun in my possession not listed on my permit, regardless of having a voucher, would arrest me.

Oh well.

Literally, each county makes its own rules. Although personally, I would consider Orange County to be "Upper Manhattan" :). I would also not trust the Queens guy--original has nothing to do with it. The only two exemptions are for .22-caliber rimfires, or a curio/relic. Which is interesting in the context of lever-actions.

As to the Garand, the problem is not capacity, it's the (incorrect) idea that the en-bloc loader counts as a magazine, making it a dreaded Assault Weapon if it has Evil Features. Given that the follower is contained in the rifle, I do not find that that holds water, as a magazine does not hold ammunition, it feeds ammunition, as this garbage piece of legislation itself notes by referring to magazines as ammunition feeding devices.

Welcome to P-F, all your threads are belong to us.

You are allowed 1 Point here in New York as I am sure you know. So a removable magazine is OK as long as there is no bayonet lug, no threaded barrel of flash supressor, no vertical forend and no thumbhole stock of full pistol grip. My National Match one never had any of those other parts.

I don't shoot it, so it almost never out of the gun room.
