So, I literally just got this in the mail like 12 mins ago lol

After hunting down a knife from Spyderco (whom I love) for a few weeks, and then stumbling over to Benchmade, I discovered this knife. I was told for $160 it’s be hard to beat and it helps the knife rights guy Doug Ritter out. Size, steel, tip and shape seemed really great. Plus he’s responsible for the Ritter Griptilian Classic.

Apparently the Benchmade Axis Lock patent is up so Hogue was allowed to use it and it’s called the Able Lock here. Apparently instead of Omni springs Hogue uses Wolff which are stronger.

Blade is 3.44” of 20CV.
G10 scales.
Deep carry clip.
Partial liners

Deployment is super glassy smooth. Blade is centered. Tall edge that is toothy and really nasty sharp.

You’d be hard pressed to find a better value at $160 honestly.

Unless something shows up in the coming days (I will report it here) it seems flawless.

I've met Doug and his family once or twice at the Blade Show. Once they gave me a ride from the motel over to the show when I stayed offsite.

I bought the knife from a fella over on bladeforums that I know who tinkers with knives a bit. It's the Ritter Grip with M390 and the aftermarket titanium covers from Kevin Wilkins (Germany) who's been on the internet for many years.

He gave me a deal I couldn't refuse. I forget who made the Mokuti clip, which is awesome.

Great BM copy.

Generally speaking avoid food prep with a folder with liners and deep crevices unless you're willing to disassemble it for thorough cleaning...... Or avoid any food contact beyond the blade.

I think Hogue makes a better version of this knife than Benchmade, especially since this guy is full G-10 handle and 20CV steel. Incredible bargain!
I just can't trust the springs used in this type of lock. I think functionally Spyderco's ball bearing lock (like on the Manix 2) is superior.
In case anyone is wondering: the Axis lock patent ran out recently, that's why we are seeing a number of companies come out with copies.

Mentioned that in the OP. Also Hogue is using Wolff springs in theirs vs the weaker Omni Benchmade uses.

You're right, I missed that part! I'd buy this over any Benchmade Axis knife available right now. There is a mini version available now as well, unfortunately the handle scales look a bit misplaced on that version, it's too busy. The full-size version looks better!

I've been using a Benchmade with an Axis lock for 17 years and have never had an issue with springs. Got any sources showing spring problems?

I remember reading about a time when axis springs would occasionally break. I'm not a huge benchmade fan but if I recall correctly they had a bad batch of springs or something but they warrantied them and fixed everything.

The axis mechanism uses two independent springs. it's my understanding it will function fine with just one spring.

One of the pluses of the design is if both springs were to fail and you were surviving in an Amazon jungle with a 3-inch pocket knife you could simply wedge a small piece of wood to hold the Lock bar in place.

So if one is inclined to avoid a benchmade due to the potential spring failure my guess is you would not feel comfortable carrying any firearm?

The usual culprit is fidgeters and fidgeting. Some folks just can't resist the impulse to open and close knives all day. Never had that particular affliction.

Gotcha. My son was telling me about a guy at work who was dissing the axis lock. I guess there is someone on youtube who smacks the spine of the knife on a hard surface which creates enough inertia to release the lock. So this guy my son works with goes to show him and he makes it work all right, the knife closes on his hand and he almost had to go get stitches.

Maybe he will graduate to smacking a VP9 with a hammer

At a lab I ran while back, we had two expensive ‘accidents’ that damaged custom built equipment. The result was a sign that said:
ATTENTION
NO GESTURING NEAR SENSORS

I should have included a ban on fidgeting. Why do people do that?

Been eyeballing those for a couple weeks now. Been resisting. This thread isn’t helping that. Looks to me like a great knife for the money. Also looks like something that should be able to get right in there and compete with the EDC kings like the Paramilitary 2, Manix 2, Griptillian, 940, etc. In addition to that, I’ve read a lot of people gush over the Ritter Griptillians, which are sadly no longer made. (I realize this is the same person behind the Ritter Grips.)

Generally speaking avoid food prep with a folder with liners and deep crevices unless you're willing to disassemble it for thorough cleaning...... Or avoid any food contact beyond the blade.

I've done a metric ton of food prep with Griptilians and a 940, and never had an issue. Like literally years of it. Imagine a knuckle-dragging single dude without any proper kitchen cutlery, and that's me. Veges, meat, cheese, condiments, you name it. I wash 'em using the same protocol we used to clean electric knives when I worked in a salmon processing plant - extremely hot water and a soapy brush. Get the knife so hot it's almost too hot to handle. I leave 'em half open on the counter to air dry.

I just can't trust the springs used in this type of lock.

I've heard about spring failure on the knife forums, but my experience indicates it's not an issue. My BM Grips and 940 have years and years of wear on 'em without any issues. I've worn them in the ocean, clipped awib inside my board shorts while working out and running, and I've pretty much exposed them to all kinds of corrosive, nasty environments and the springs keep working. Maybe there was a bad batch of springs at one time, or maybe my cleaning protocol contributes to spring life, I dunno.

I guess there is someone on youtube who smacks the spine of the knife on a hard surface which creates enough inertia to release the lock.

I think every folder that might get thrust into an emergency role should be able to withstand a moderate spine whack. I don't go ape shit on mine, but I do give the spine a sharp rap on the workbench occassionally. The ones I've had fail are liner locks (no surprise there) and a very old Endura. It probably goes without saying, keep your fingers out of the way.

As always, mileage may vary.

My info was purely anecdotal evidence as well. Read it on Bladeforums years ago, I think it was a bad batch of springs (again, years ago). People fidgeting with their knives thousands of times a day have contributed as well.
Anyway, this Hogue is a fine knife and the only sad thing is that they are exclusive to Knifeworks and that makes obtaining them in Europe slightly complicated/expensive.
Edit: just checked, Knifeworks has temporarily stopped international shipping due to Covid-19 complications.

newyork are the scales slightly slimmer than a BM Griptilian (https://www.amazon.com/Benchmade-Griptilian-Drop-Point-Coated-Finish/dp/B000PLAACM/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=doug+ritter&qid=1593016597&sr=8-3)? The BM version has a subtle palm swell, but the photos up thread suggest your new knife does not. I would prefer to have a slightly thinner handle than the conventional BM, just to maximize pocket space.

I’m sorry, I’ve never actually had a BM Ritter Griptilian. I had a cheaper plain Grip years and years ago that I don’t really remember.

Here are a few pics of it in hand. My hands are pretty small as a side note. My 105lb wife has almost the same size hands as me.

Yeah, I been to culinary school, where dishwashing knives was a no-no...I have done food prep with folders, too. Not seen an issue. A couple of my high end kitchen knives (literally) had issues after a decade or so of being tossed in the dish washer, but they are tools, to be replaced as needed. All my knives go through the dishwasher, regularly, and two have had problems. The problems were minor, and I have not replaced them yet.

Also, I carry a few knives at work that go through the dishwasher every few months or so, sanitize setting, no detergent, just for piece of mind as I carry them. I quit worrying about using folders for food prep when I stopped dissassembling them for occasional cleaning, litterally decades ago. It seems that the detergent and rinse aides are more damaging to materials in quality knives than the water and temp....

I’m either going to buy an RSK or the Benchmade 560BK-1 with the M4 and G-10 tomorrow unless someone has a better hard-use folder around 3.5 in and $150. The only Spyderco option that scratches the itch is the Bradley Folder 2. ZT has nothing in stock for the mil purchase program.
