View Full Version : Somebody who actually knows inside of S&W revolvers

One of my pet peeves on the internet is looking at YouTube videos about S&W revolvers with posters who know nothing about what they are talking about. If you have a free 90 minutes, grab your coffee and enjoy a retired, trained police armorer “Benny”, as he walks you through a very detailed disassembly of a N frame revolver. He actually spent some lengthy time learning from the people on the line at the factory in Springfield, MA. Don’t matter if yours is a K,L,J... they basically the same. Lots of tips on what problems to look for:https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4ujyLn3lHBc

Gunblue490 doesn’t have a short version it comes to firearms. I bought a 1984 Smith and Wesson Model 19 a few months ago, and then gave it to my son. I watched Benny’s video comparing his new Model 19 Classic, with an older Model 19. He convinced me that newer can be better. https://youtu.be/4h9l2ipiKf4

I thought that was the definition of YouTube! (smile)

This guy may know something about revolvers, but his video on dropping the slide on an empty 1911 shows his ignorance of that platform.

Oh Boy... I did note that Benny said he had little to no experience with 1911 pistols, and that his pistol broke during the video. I’d go into the whole issue of slide speed, but what’s the point?

Just an fyi on S&W revolvers...there are some obvious differences between current models with MIM parts and older ones. Even more changes if you compare them with pre-war S&Ws.
He reminds me of a guy I used to work with. He went to every armorer course S&W had back in the day. He taught me lots about checking timing and such in a revolver. Interestingly enough he doesn’t have much of an opinion on IL versus lock S&W revolvers. He has carried the same no dash model 36 daily for almost 40 years. I was fortunate when he decided to sell me one of his old BUGs. He had a model 60 with the box and papers from where he bought it in 1984. He only carried it for 3-4 years then it sat in his safe until I bought it in December 2019.

Gunblue490’s take on the new S&W revolvers, mostly revolves around not having to fit parts on the new models. I have S&W revolvers from the 50’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 2018. I like them all.

Guys "fixing their S&W revolvers" have kept many a gunsmith in business.

I watched another one of his videos, where he was going to comment on Glocks, but, I didn’t get that far...I stopped the video when he made the comment that 5-6 rounds were plenty for HD/SD... Don’t get me wrong, I respect this mans knowledge on S&W revolvers, but telling people that 5-6 rounds is enough, is IMO, very dated info, that clearly doesn’t take into consideration that there may more than one perp involved...

Just because a guy is a great mechanic doesn't mean you should get your driving lessons from him. ;)

You, I, and most folks on this board are well aware of that, but the uniformed newbie who happens to stumble across this video, may not be.. And, that’s a problem. This is a classic example of how one should stay in his own lane..

This is a tough audience...lol! I just watched a bit of gunblue490’s Glock video, and at 12 minutes, he says “back in the day”, and “before multiple attackers”, revolvers were enough. He also cites his readings on the number of rounds fired in a home defense situation, and concludes that 5-6 should be plenty, but “that’s up to each person”. Personally, I keep a Sig P229 in my nightstand drawer, and carry a Sig P365/Glock 19 on my waist when I’m not in bed. I’d appreciate anyone’s account of a running gun battle, home invasion statistics and stories. James Yeager was asked how many rounds a pistol should hold in an active shooter situation. Yeager responded, “How many times do you plan to miss.” I can’t believe I quoted Yeager, but that makes some sense.

I’ll admit that I didn’t catch all that, as I was fast forwarding thru the vid, because this guy tends to prattle on..Where I did stop, was where he made the comment about 5-6 rounds being enough.. Maybe that works for him, but IMO, it’s still bad advice. Granted, a revolver is better than a sharp stick, but it has its limitations, which you summed nicely with Yeager quote..

I found myself fast forwarding a lot during his lengthy video, and stopped when he arrived at the U.S. military’s need for a higher capacity pistol. I watched that video over a year ago, and he basically says that Glock forgot to add a safety on their pistol.
ETA I use a semiauto, because it has a light rail, and I do attach a light to it. The idea of unlimited capacity has fascinated me since watching Captain Kirk shoot his phaser, but even he had to throw it at someone once in a while. 😂

Yeah, I kinda figured that’s where he was headed..
