They're from my home town so I thought it would be bad manners to put them up there...but yeah I like that one and a few of their others. I think Toy was also a Marine and served in Vietnam.

I never really cared for some of their most popular, especially Free Bird. I suppose it could be because it was on the radio so much back then. I gravitated towards some of their lesser know songs.
Back then I was a wannabe guitar player so I Know a Little, Saturday Night Special, That Smell were my fav's.

Yep... Amazing song the first 500 times you hear it, but much like Stairway to Heaven, there can be too much of a good thing.

I agree with you all, but give the classic live version a try (or retry) sometime if it has been a while. The finale really is amazing.

Play it pretty for Oakland...
Ballad of Curtis Loew is another winner.

I scrolled through this thread just to make sure this ^^^ got mentioned. :)
First, in answer to the OP, everyone likes southern rock. They play it at quinceañeras and bat mitzvahs.
For me the Allmans did the best work of the recognized SR bands, but the Stones made the greatest southern rock ever; see Exile on Main Street.
For great current SR I highly recommend Alabama Shakes.

I saw Skynyrd on their tour 10 years after the accident. Ronnie’s little brother Johnny was singing for them. The last encore was obviously to be Freebird. The whole stage was lit in blue light, with one single white spotlight shining down onto the mic stand. Johnny walked out holding one of Ronnie’s old hats and told the audience there was only one person who could sing this song, his brother Ronnie, and he was dead. He put the hat on the mic stand and told us it was up to us that night. He walked off stage as the band began to play. We in the audience sang that song start to finish. Johnny came back out for the guitar run at the end as video monitors showed old band clips and pictures of those who perished.
It still gives me chills to think about, and is my most vivid concert memory of many, many concerts. Especially realizing that most of the people on that stage were the survivors, and had to relive that in some way every time they played.

Oh man.. I hated that song for years. Any musician playing clubs in anywhere in the south in the 70's and early 80's had to listen to that "always one somewhat inebriated fucker" in the back screaming, "Freeeeee Biiiiirrrrrd!" between every song from about 9:30 on.

Does ZZ Top qualify? I thought Texas was kinda a place unto itself and more associated with Blues... But...if we're gonna go there; this may be one of the best performances I've ever seen.

Blackfoot and The Outlaws were my particular favorites, along with the early Allman Bros. All great stuff.
A couple that have not been mentioned:
The Henry Paul Band - their debut album in 1982 was one of my most listened to records in high school that senior year. Paul was the lead singer for the Outlaws with that great booming basso voice and this band was a bit harder rocking. "feel the Heat" to this day is in my desert island song playlist
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG4LBxy1N8k
And this one tends to get overlooked but it so rooted in Southern Rock - Hank Williams Jr and Friends. Recorded at Muscle Shoals and had performances from Charlie Daniels and Marshal Tucker band members. This is the album that set Bocephus' future career success.
