View Full Version : Safariland 637 - new pancake ALS rig

I have used 637x and 737x ALS holsters on high ride belt loops for years, but they aren’t particularly concealable. Each has a 6006 ALS guard installed for added security. They are bulky enough that I’ve had to use the “that’s my insulin pump” line a few times. I usually don’t give a shit because I use them when I’m at my bud’s house down in the ‘hood.
A few months ago Safariland announced the 637, what they are calling a pancake ALS holster:
https://www.cop-shop.de/460543-thickbox_default/safariland-637ag-alstm-beltslide-holster-w-dual-security-device-leather-look.jpg
https://www.safariland.com/products/holsters-and-gear/holsters/model-637-als-concealment-holster-model_637.html
I’m still not seeing any fits listed, the Safariland website shows April availability but who knows at this point.
Today I found a listing on a German website that shows this new holster with a 6006 installed, this makes me happy:
https://www.cop-shop.de/460544-thickbox_default/safariland-637ag-alstm-beltslide-holster-w-dual-security-device-leather-look.jpg

https://www.cop-shop.de/en/product/safariland-637ag-alstm-beltslide-holster-w-dual-security-device-leather-look-7251
If anyone sees these go up for ordering, could they please send up a flare? I hope to hell they do a Gen5 19/45 and a Gen5 26 right away.

Very interested as well. I use the GLS with 1.5” belt loop every day (plainclothes). I would really like one of these, as I prefer OWB when at work, but this will possibly be a bit more concealable.
I could use one of those myself.

Looking at the pics, I think it’s built like a turducken - an ALS holster molded into a leather pancake.

The 537 seems to be largely special order only now (no stock at retailers for common pistols). Guessing they see the 637 as a replacement for most use cases.

I’m intrigued. I don’t know much about the ALS system, will an ALS holster for a Glock 17 or 19 work with a 26?

I’ve used one for both an M&P full size and compact so I would guess the Glock pistols should work like that too.

Not a fan of GLS as a retention device - only as a way of keeping the gun from falling out.

Agreed. Anyone in front grabbing for the gun will release the lock without even trying. Had to demonstrate that with a blue gun for some colleagues to believe me.

I wish I could find an accurate holster fit chart. The last one I looked at on Safariland’s website had an endless list of firearms that worked with this holster. I doubt that’s accurate and I think it’s likely a place holder.

They do with the regular duty holsters , so I would assume so. They light versions will retain the gun without the light attached too.

The Safariland SL637 is our duty holster for concealed carry. Quality seems to be good (but I`m not an expert in holsters), but concealment of my VP9 is poor. I liked the old Bianchi 82 carry lok for the P7 better.
Cop-Shop is a supplier for law enforcement officers and agencies over here. As far as I can judge, the products I ordered over the years where ok. But some are pretty expensive.

Do you think it would conceal a thin pistol well? How comfortable is it?
Thank you for responding. This holster is a product I’ve long been excited about, but if it doesn’t conceal well, or is not comfortable, then I will pass.

I'm curbing my enthusiasm on this, because, while awesome, the ALS mechanism is VERY bulky. Yes, they might mount it on a "slim" piece of leather, the mechanism itself is still very wide. Not sure how well this is going to conceal, but, I'll be happy to be proven wrong...

Yes, I know this website. I've ordered a holster and belt for IPSC there some years ago and some more stuff (ordered to my home address in Germany). Good experience. What's the question?
If you want to know, if they have it in stock, just shoot an e-mail to bestellung@cop-gmbh.de. I don't know and don't find this info on the website. E-mail in English should work fine.

Do you think it would conceal a thin pistol well?
I can just guess. The Holster itself is about 50mm wide, while my VP9 is 33mm wide. The old Bianchi holster was 34mm wide and the P7 29mm. (1 inch is 25,4mm.)
So I think it`s more about the holster than the pistol itself and a P7 in the Safariland Holster would not conceal verry well, too.
When I used the holster for the first time, it felt uncomfortable at my hip. I then switched to a wider belt which made things a lot better, but it still took several shifts untill I got used to it. Now it`s ok for me. But maybe people of other size than me (I`m a quite average man 183cm/6 feet high at a weight of about 80kg/180lbs) will feel different about this.

While I'm enthusiastic about this holster, I fear that it is going to be far too high-riding to be useful for me. YMMV.

I'm fairly short-waisted, got a 537 for a G19, and found that it was an awkward draw. It's a combination of the high ride and that I had to wear it around 4:00.
I'm not blaming the holster -- as with any holster, body size and shape make a huge difference in fit and comfort.

Safariland's description as "soft, flexible holster body" is a hard no for me.
It is the same material as other Safariland pancake type holster. It is “soft and flexible” compared to their duty type holsters, but it is still stiffer than most leather.
In for a 1911 or kframe one

I ended up calling them because it’s impossible to tell if they actually have them (the Optics Planet business model, get the money and then tell the customer it’s not in stock) and was told it would be at least 90 days out. I’ll hold off until after I move, trying to change the address on a long lead order is a headache.

So here are a couple of pic's showing the same Glock 19ish guns in a garden variety ALS concealment holster, the 637 and a JMCK2. You can see the old style ALS concealment has the grip further away from the body. Keep in mind the curved beltslide back holds the gun up higher from the table than it would if being worn. I really like the ride height of the 637 and how much closer in it rides. It's feels much like my all time fav holster, the Alessi DOJ. I like that they kept the friction adjustment screw which helps retain the gun while the button release is activated. Apologies for mediocre picture quality and the old potting table, but it gives decent contrast.

You can see how much higher it rides on the belt in this picture:

I wonder at how such a big, established company can have such a dysfunctional website. Mebbe their designer doesn't like guns or equipment for guns? I had already received my holster before they sent me a tracking link that worked.

It’s definitely thick. Maybe I got spoiled by carrying a 1911 for so long, but there’s no way I can conceal my 19 in that holster wearing just a t-shirt, which is what I wear to work most of the time. It won’t be a big deal after it cools off and I start wearing hoodies everyday.

So it finally came yesterday and I was able to wear it around the house for a few hours today. I put my issued gen 4 G26 in it since I didn’t want to remove the xc1 on my 19m. It does ride a little higher than what I prefer and concealment is sub optimal for NPEs (ie: flying armed) but given that most people in my city are pretty oblivious and where I’m at civilian CCW is a no go, I doubt many would make me. One question I do have for those that are using it is why the heck did Safariland put those two large thumbscrews on the back?! I don’t like to wear an undershirt and those screws really dig into my side.

Just got home, and picked up the holster from the FedEx store on the way.
First impressions are very favorable. No, it’s not the thinnest holster out there, but it’s a big improvement over a 637x or 737x on a loop or paddle.
Those thumbscrews are odd, but I have a theory. I’m wondering if this holster was originally designed for the European market (it was available from German suppliers for months before it was available here,) and the German one includes an 6006 ALS guard like the ones I use on everything. When you remove the thumbscrews, the T-nuts stick a little proud, just like what you would see for mounting an ALS guard. The thumbscrews are hollow backed and cover up that extension of the T-nuts. I’m not sure the T-nuts actually do anything other than provide a mounting hardpoint for a 6006, it may be that they can be removed.
I do know a 6006 ALS guard mounted right up, and I’ll try to give the 26 or 45 some love this week.
I’m hoping they do a 26 sized version before too long.

I ordered my 637 LEFT HAND on Sept 19. I've called Safariland 2 times on it, the second call being last week.
The nice lady could not give me specific date but said not to expect it for at least a month. I'm sure that being left hand has something to do with it but be advised that new orders for these may strech out toward Sparks turnaround times.
I'll just keep trucking on withe the IWB and OWB versions of the GLS models and my Sparks Exec Companion in the mean time.

Just got home, and picked up the holster from the FedEx store on the way.
First impressions are very favorable. No, it’s not the thinnest holster out there, but it’s a big improvement over a 637x or 737x on a loop or paddle.

I just realized I didn’t post how the 6006 fits - I think it’s actually less obtrusive than the thumbnuts, and it serves a purpose.

I wore mine today on duty for the first time. I just....don’t really like it. I was wearing my normal winter uniform (blue jeans and a hoodie), and it did not conceal well at all. For reference, I’m 6’1” and 205 lbs.
Plus, I normally carry a personally owned G19 with an RMR and TLR-7 on duty. Obviously, that won’t work with this holster, so I carried my issued 19 for the first time in a while.
I’ll keep the holster for the rare occasion I wear an agency polo and BDU’s, but it won’t be seeing much use other than that.

I got an email from Safariland that mine shipped on the 4th. That makes about 3.5 months since it was ordered Sept 19. From the email, "Most orders arrive within 4-8 business days. However, in rare instances it may take up to 2 weeks."
2 weeks, 3.5 months, eh, who cares these days. As long as they didn't screw up and send a RH holster, I'll be happy to get it. I'm sure it will quickly get me to a 5 second FAST with it's glorious ALS speed.
Gringo (not bitter at all) p
PS, I wonder if it will have the same issue with the ALS mech being worn away by my tall Defoor front sight as I had with my OWB 6378-283.

I’m still liking mine, concealment isn’t horrid with my fluffy body type. I’m usually carrying my 26.5 in it, and I do hope they offer a smaller version at some point. I can see where someone with a more athletic build would have concealment issues.

Mine finally came in a few days ago and today I had time to evaluate it.
There is no way that I can use this as a carry, practice and competition holster. For a lefty, the bulbous protrusion that covers the mag release bangs my arthritic glock knuckle on every draw and reholster. Below I have photos of my GLS, paddle ALS and this new ALS. The GCL does not cover the mag release at all, the paddle ALS has a slight flare the does not hit my knuckle and the new ALS has a mag release cover that extends 3/8" out from the side of the gun, right where my knuckle hits it on a draw when positioned at 8:00 (lefty). There is no way that I could do 50 plus draws a practice session comfortably.

My guess is that if it was a straight drop at 9:00 it and I didn't have a giant honking knuckle, it would not be as bad. But this is what I end up with.

I understand that they have to make some changes due to the ALS mechanism but this is unusable for me. Additionally, the rear knurled knob digs into my fat roll after 5 min of wearing it around.
I'm sure that at some time in the future I will experiment with altering the mag release cover and removing the rear knurled knob and the post it screws into but so far this holster is a disappointment all the way around.

FYI I talked to the Safariland reps at the OTOA a couple weeks ago. There is still no ETA on availability for the M&P.

Still enjoying mine. Shot an IDPA match with it this morning.

I have removed the mag release protrusion via dremel and removed both knurled knobs and their sockets. This holster works much better for me now. Since it is summertime in TX I will probably be carrying IWB most of the time until the fall. I will try to give another report once I have been carrying in it for a while.

Mine is still packed in a box from the move. I put an ALS guard on mine as shown upthread, but I’m wondering if removal of the T nuts like you did is a better approach. Time to find that box…
