Already in 2020, police have taken more than 250 illegal guns off the streets in Charlotte. They say more than 100 of those guns were reportedly stolen from cars.

Victim shaming (e.g. don't dress like a slut and you won't get raped)

Most are probably from cars with "Assault Life", "I don't call 911", and "protected by Smith and Wesson" bumper stickers.

To quote the late Pat Rogers, "Your car is not a holster".
I can say, based on my experience dealing with this, that just about every one of those cars were unlocked.

Beat me to it.

"My pistol, my wallet, my SS card, my kid's birth certificate, my checkbook........."

I run out of lines on the state case report to list property on. And 90 percent of them aren't locked. B&E guys simply walk neighborhoods at night and try doors until they score one.

At our house, we lock all doors and about the only thing we leave in the cars are owner's manuals and umbrellas.

Car cruisers don’t even bother looking. They just run from car to car looking for open doors. That’s not to say the stickers wont get you targeted but I’m betting the majority were stolen from unlocked cars.

I've got a relative with Charlotte Meck PD, and he says they've done studies which show the vast majority of stolen firearms are from cars with such bumper stickers and which are also left unlocked.

Not to excuse an unsecured firearm in a car, but this is a partial consequence of a plethora of gun free zones dotted throughout ones daily business.

I’d bet a small percent are stolen for that reason during the day, but I’d wager an even larger amount is because Bubba left his “truck gun” in the glove box overnight.

There's a big difference between a victim, and being a complete idiot.

Leaving a firearm in an unlocked vehicle overnight is being a complete idiot. Especially an unsecured & unlocked firearm.

Completely irresponsible considering what the potential consequences may bring.

Unsurprisingly, the career cops have covered the basics of this thread. The only thing I’ll add is this:

Having actually seen one of those car cruisers in the act, there is NO WAY that I’m going to lose out to a tweaker like that. I can handle the financial loss, but the sheer embarrassment of losing a decent pistol to a jort-wearing, "DWI bicycle" riding, sketchy dude like the guys that crawl our neighborhoods would make me hang my head in shame.

Doors locked; nothing in the car. They may steal my car, but I’m not getting taken for more than that. #itsapridething

Yep. Not long ago a bunch of (you guessed it, unlocked) vehicles got broken into in my area. Now it’s a fairly safe area, as in you probably won’t be murdered. But I told my wife I’m not going to just leave my stuff out to be swiped by Joe Tweaker. That’s just an insult.

If you kick in my door, beat my ass, and take my stuff you’ve earned it in a roundabout way. Stealing shit out of an unlocked vehicle is on me.

Mum's car was sitting in her driveway, inside a nice gated community when it was stolen. She left her transponder inside, and the door unlocked.

For a while I got stuck compiling the UCR stats that went to the FBI in my agency. We had more stuff stolen monetarily from cars than home burglaries each month. It’s amazing what folks leave in their cars.

While I don't leave firearms in the car as a rule, on the rare occasion I need to I am thankful I have a Subaru Outback with no bumper sticks or distinguishing marks. Doesn't exactly scream "gun owner"

I've lost count of the number of people I've seen pull up to a convenience store in the metro and walk inside, while leaving the car unlocked and running.

Is there any relationship to the car break-ins and the seeming lack of prosecution/conviction/jailing for property crime? I live outside Atlanta and I see new reports of mass car break ins at apartment complexes. neighborhoods, etc. Do those criminals get significant punishment for such crime?

That's not a reason, not an excuse. ConsoleVault.com. If you want the gun out of my car when it's parked at an NPE, you'll need to take the entire vehicle to wherever you have a cutting torch.

That's nice. Not only do they not have safes for my model of car, they don't even have safes for any models by my car's manufacturer. Not everyone drives a truck or SUV.

$20 snapsafe and the cable lock that comes with guns and nobody uses to secure it under the seat is 100% better than unsecured.

For about $34 you can buy a Gunvault Nanovault on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/GunVault-Nanovault-Nano-Pistol-NV200/dp/B00384755S/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=gunvault%2Bnanovault%2B200&qid=1583075185&sprefix=gunvault%2Bnanovault&sr=8-3&th=1&psc=1). It can fit a full-size pistol and spare magazine and comes with a steel cable to attach it to the frame of your drivers seat. There’s no excuse to leave an unsecured handgun in a vehicle nowadays.

This^^ most car burglars are looking for unlocked cars or are “smash and grab” a lock box secured to the vehicle will address 95% of all car burglaries.
