Just looking for standard ball loads.

Varget can be used successfully in the M1, but it will generally result in lighter loads. If I remember correctly (but don't quote me) 50 grains of Varget and a 150 grain bullet result in a load similar to GI ball. Verify that though, as it's been years since I competed.

The Hornady 6th ed. has a special section on the Garand.

They list:

150/155 (#30312 A-Max, COAL 3.240 or #3037 FMJ, COAL 3.185): 42.3 to 46.2 Varget
168 (#30502 A-Max, #30501 BTHP, both 3.240): 40.3 to 47.0 Varget
178 (#30712 A-Max, #30631 BTHP, both 3.240): 37.9 to 46.4 Varget

The classic powders for the M1 are IMR 3031, 4895 and 4064. ADI in Australia makes clones of various powders for Hodgdon. Their clone for IMR 4064 is Varget. The name came half rom "Varmint", and half from "Target". Look at your loading manual, and you will notice how close they are. For some reason, I have always gotten better accuracy from IMR 4064. YMMV.
